Long-term logging residue loadings affect tree growth but not soil nutrients in lodgepole pine forests

Both above- and below-ground characteristics are affected by logging residue loadings. Long-term monitoring of tree growth and soil nutrients was conducted. We found that tree growth but not soil nutrients were affected. There were dynamic relationships between tree growth and logging residue loadings.

Dataset: Daily Flows and Nutrients Loads in the Sprague River Basin, WY2002-2020

Daily flows and nutrient (phosphorus, nitrogen, total suspended solids) loads were estimated for multiple locations in the Sprague River Basin (OR) over water year (WY) 2002-2020. These timeseries were computed using continuous and biweekly flow data in combination with biweekly nutrient measurements collect by Klamath Tribes at eight sampling stations across the basin. The estimated timeseries were then used as a basis to investigate the spatial and temporal dynamics of nutrient concentrations and loads, estimate relative amounts of background and anthropogenic loading, assess the potential impacts of the Klamath Tribes' water rights calls on instream flow and water quality in recent years, and evaluate long-term trends at each sampling station within the Sprague River basin.

The data sources and methodologies used to generate this dataset are described in the following report:

Walker, J.D. and J. Nutrient loading from a sustainably certified aquaculture operation dwarfs annual nutrient inputs from a large multi-use watershed, Lake Yojoa, Honduras (DATA)

Dataset for manuscript entitled: "Nutrient loading from a sustainably certified aquaculture operation dwarfs annual nutrient inputs from a large multi-use watershed, Lake Yojoa, Honduras"

Abstract: Net-pen aquaculture is a popular and increasingly prevalent method for producing large quantities of low-fat protein in freshwater ecosystems across the tropics. While there are numerable social and economic advantages associated with aquaculture, there are also challenges related to the environmental sustainability of aquaculture operations which supply pens with externally produced feed. For example, excessive nutrient loading which can drive rapid eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems is a major risk. In this study we compare the estimated annual nutrient loads from the six principal tributaries that contribute to Lake Yojoa to the estimated nutrient load of a large net-pen Tilapia operation located in the central region of the lake. The Tilapia farm was responsible for ~ 86% of the nitrogen (N) and ~95% of the phosphorus (P) contributions to Lake Yojoa for the year of our study. This disproportionate nutrient loading of both N and P suggests that this single aquaculture operation, more so than changes in nutrient inputs from the watershed, was responsible for the previously documented deterioration of Lake Yojoa. This study shows the potential for net-pen aquaculture to have disproportionately negative impacts on freshwater ecosystems, even when operations meet the current sustainability certifications standards. We suggest shifts in metrics that could improve the impact of the certification process so that best practices can reduce the impact of net-pen aquaculture on freshwater ecosystems and arrive at the intended goal of long-term environmental sustainability.

Data files:

rating_curves_2018_2019: Rating cruves for tributaries Helado, Balas, Varsovia, and Raices

sensor_2018_2019: Pressure transducer data for Healdo, Balas, Varsovia, and Raices

Staff_TS_27MAY21: Manual stage measurements for Helado, Balas, Varsovia, and Raices

13OCT21_Rivers: In stream nutrient data for all tributaries

q_cacao_2019: Discharge for Cacao calculated using Manning's equation (methods provided in text)

q_yure_2019: Discharge for Yure calculated using Manning's equation (methods provided in text)

N_P_aqua: Nutrient contributions from aquaculture (calculations provided in Supplemental Text 4)

precip: Yojoa watershed precipitation

Dataset: Effect of soil organic matter content and nutrient loading on productivity of Spartina patens (v.0.10)

River sediment diversions in the Mississippi River Delta have been planned as a keystone strategy for wetland restoration in coastal Louisiana. The introduction of mineral sediment and dissolved nutrients present in Mississippi River water could drastically alter the abiotic environment of the surrounding wetlands, and the effects on wetland vegetation are unclear. In this study, 50 sods were transplanted from a Spartina patens-dominated brackish marsh into a greenhouse and grown in either mineral or organic soil in combination with one of five levels of nutrient enrichment. The primary component of the mineral soil was silt collected from the bank of the Mississippi River, while that of the organic soil was peat collected from the aforementioned S. patens marsh. Nutrient treatments were based on a range of Mississippi River diversion discharge rates of nitrate, phosphate, sulfate, potassium, and iron as well as a control with no nutrient addition. After one summer, we found that total porewater conductivity increased with nutrient loading under both soil types. Under higher nutrient treatments the concentrations of porewater sulfide were elevated to phytotoxic levels, but this effect was only observed in the organic soil treatment. Nitrate and ammonium porewater concentrations were affected by both nutrient loading and soil type; however, nitrate was higher in the mineral soil while ammonium was higher in the organic soil. Porewater phosphorous and potassium concentrations were elevated in organic soil conditions and higher nutrient loading, while porewater iron was higher under mineral soil and lower nutrient loading. Aboveground standing crop, belowground biomass accumulation (i.e., ingrowth), and soil shear strength were also sampled at the end of the growing season with the goal of examining their relationships with nutrient and sediment enrichment and porewater chemistry.
