OA eBook Usage Data Use-Cases by Stakeholder Diagram

This image was developed as a part of the "Developing a Data Trust for Open Access Ebook Usage" project funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The image summarizes findings of various uses of OA eBook usage data contributed through asynchronous activities and virtual design workshops held with stakeholder groups from 2020-2021. It provides an overview of how publishers, libraries, and book publishing platforms and services use OA book usage data. Christina Drummond designed and facilitated the virtual processes that generated the input for this image. Ms. Drummond and Kevin Hawkins developed image content. Philemon Eniola designed the graphical layout.

D1.4 - Consolidated OA data set for responsible research practices and trust in science: POIESIS National and Regional Database

Deliverable 1.4 of the POIESIS project is a consolidated open access data set for responsible research practices and trust in science. D1.4 consists of two databases: the POIESIS National Database and the POEISIS Regional Database. The method and rationale behind the construction of all indicators in both databases are laid out in Work Package 1’s previous deliverable, D1.3 (Bauer et al., 2024). The two database are accompanied by a Guidance Sheet which provides details and relevant notes regarding the structure of the two databases.

OA-Concepts and Wikipedia-Links for "The different AI of Science and Wikipedia"

The files contain the data for the VosViewer analyses in "The Different Artificial Intelligences of Science and Wikipedia" (Korte et al. 2024).

OpenAlex:

As described in the paper, all works from OpenAlex from 2001 and 2022 with the concept "Artificial Intelligence" and a concept score > 0.3 were downloaded. In August 23 using the OpenAlex API. The files contain for each work all concepts with a concept score > 0.3 in one line each separeted by dots. This allows co-occurrence analyses of concepts in VosViewer. For the analyses in the paper whitespaces and "(" in the concepts were removed.

First line for 2001:
Random forest. 'Opening the Future' - a new funding model for open-access monographs: introducing an innovative approach to publishing OA books through library membership funding

We showcase a collaborative pilot case study that implements an innovative open access revenue model at the Central European University Press and Liverpool University Press, with assistance from the COPIM Project (Community-led Open Publication Infrastructures for Monographs). Building on existing library subscription models (e.g. OBP, punctum), this is a sustainable OA publishing model that gives library members access to a highly-regarded backlist, with the membership fees then used to make the frontlist openly accessible.
Given the current global library environment and existing budget pressures that have been exacerbated by Covid-19, a consortial model of funding promises a cost-effective solution for OA that means no single institution bears a disproportionate burden. This model, then, appeals to both those who wish to pay for subscription-access content (more traditional university acquisition models) and those who support OA initiatives. It brings many institutions together under one roof for an affordable route to open access books.
Library members get access to a selection of the publishers’ backlists, DRM free and with perpetual access after three years. In return, the membership revenue is used to make newly-published books openly accessible to anyone with an internet connection.
We believe Opening the Future is a trailblazer in scholarly comms, offering a viable and affordable route to OA change for small/medium university presses and which appeals to libraries of all sizes and budgets. We aim to open up research for the public good. The model that we are piloting reduces inequalities in access to open access publication by eradicating exclusionary book processing charges (BPCs).
As we progress with the pilot, we are writing up everything we’ve done to implement the model and will release this and any software as a free toolkit, so that other publishers can use it and also take the leap.
