<p>Dataset for forced oscillations experiments with the nanoindenter for halite, pmma, olivine and quartz. The files are *.pkl format (pickle) and can be accessed with the "pickle" library in python. The name of each file contains: the name of the tested material, the oscillation period in seconds, the test number (multiple tests for each period). The oscillation amplitude is 10% of the test's load "P", unless stated otherwise - for example: A20 means that the amplitude is 20% of the load in that test. </p> <p>Each file contains the following columns: experiment time (in seconds), load (in mN), displacement of the indenter tip (in nm) and may or may not contain the indentation hardness H (in GPa) from the continuous stiffness measurement method - wich is not required for the calculation of attenuation.</p> <p>For any questions please contact Nir Badt.</p>

Supplemental dataset from: Initial acoustoelastic measurements in olivine: Investigating the effect of stress on P- and S-wave velocities
<p>It is well known that elasticity is a key physical property in the determination of the structure and composition of the Earth and provides critical information for the interpretation of seismic data. This study investigates the stress-induced variation in elastic wave velocities, known as the acoustoelastic effect, in San Carlos olivine. A recently developed experimental ultrasonic acoustic system, the Directly Integrated Acoustic System Combined with Pressure Experiments (DIASCoPE), was used with the D-DIA multi-anvil apparatus to transmit ultrasonic sound waves and collect the reflections. We use the DIASCoPE to obtain longitudinal (P) and shear (S) elastic wave velocities from the sample which we compare to our known stress state in the D-DIA derived from synchrotron X-ray diffraction. We use elastic-plastic self-consistent (EPSC) numerical modeling to forward model X-ray diffraction data collected in D-DIA experiments to obtain the macroscopic stress on our sample. We can observe the relationship between the relative elastic wave velocity change (ΔV/V) and macroscopic stress to determine the acoustoelastic constants, and interpret our observations using the linearized first-order equation based on the model proposed by Hughes and Kelly (1953). This work supports the presence of the acoustoelastic effect in San Carlos olivine, which can be measured as a function of pressure and temperature. This study will aid in our understanding of the acoustoelastic effect and provide a new experimental technique to measure the stress state in elastically deformed geologic materials at high pressure conditions.</p>

CO2 sequestration by olivine for three different applications in Knowledge Mile Park, Amsterdam
<p>The concentration of atmospheric CO<sub>2</sub> is still increasing according to numerous projections of future greenhouse gas emissions. Nations must make every effort to achieve the target of keeping the global average temperature to below 2 ̊C above pre-industrial levels, agreed on in the Paris Agreement. A relatively new and promising geo-engineering approach to possibly combat this worldwide problem is the use of olivine ((Mg,Fe)<sub>2</sub>SiO<sub>4</sub>). During the weathering process of olivine, carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2</sub>) is extracted from the atmosphere and converted to insoluble carbonate minerals, consequently reducing the atmospheric CO<sub>2</sub> concentration. This research aim is to investigate whether olivine can be effectively implemented and within environmental safety boundaries in the Knowledge Mile Park, a project in commission of the Municipality of Amsterdam, to sequester atmospheric CO<sub>2</sub> in three scenarios i.e. tree sand, green rooftop substrate and footpath substrate. With the Olivine Weathering and CO<sub>2</sub> Sequestration model and PNEC-pro V6, the dissolution and CO<sub>2</sub> sequestration rate of olivine were examined and the released nickel concentration with the effects on various plant and aquatic species was analysed. Green rooftop substrate was identified as the most effective possible scenario in terms of the magnitude of CO<sub>2</sub> binding in 40 years that can be implemented in the Knowledge Mile Park remaining within the safety boundaries of environmental and ecotoxicological effects. To deepen the knowledge on olivine applications, further research should incorporate practical experimental work based on the modelled input of this report.</p>
