VAMONOS - Open-channel flow over weirs. Experimental data.
<p>This dataset contains the results from the experimental tests carried out at the hydraulics laboratory of the Civil Engineering School, at University of A Coruña (Spain), as part of the VAMONOS (Vertically-averaged models for non-hydrostatic flows) project (CTM2017-85171-C2-2-R). The aim of the project is the development of enhanced 2D river flow models including additional terms to account for non-hydrostatic pressure and mixed flow conditions around hydraulic structures.</p> <p>This data package includes experimental results on 9 different weir geometries that were tested in an open channel. The experimental facility consists of a 15 m flume with a square cross section of 0.5 x 0.5 m. Water depths were measured with an automatic data acquisition system on a grid of approximately 125 points. Each weir was tested under two different flow conditions. In all the tests the inlet discharge was close to 30 l/s, while the downstream water level was varied from one test to another, in order to obtain fully submerged and free discharge conditions.</p> <p>This dataset is structured in two pdf documents and three folders:</p> <ul> <li><em>Summary_tests.pdf</em>. This file summarizes all the experimental tests. </li> <li><em>Data_package_description.pdf</em>. This document includes information about the experimental facilities, the test conditions and the uploaded files.</li> <li><em>Raw_data.</em> This folder includes the raw data recorded during the tests.</li> <li><em>Matlab_files. </em>This folder contains three Matlab files (.m) that can be used to process the raw data and to generate some figures.</li> <li><em>Processed_data. </em>This folder contains three documents per weir that include the results obtained after processing the raw data. For each test, it is possible to find a pdf with the weir geometry and a text file with the results of the submerged and free discharge tests.</li> </ul> <p><strong>Those interested in experimental data for the calibration of numerical models or the analysis of empirical discharge rating curves, are suggested to work only with the data included in the folder <em>Processed_data.</em></strong></p> <p>Further details on the experimental setup are given in the document <em>Data_package_description.pdf</em></p>

Delta-X: UAVSAR L3 Gridded Open Water Channels, MRD, LA, USA, 2021, V2
This dataset provides gridded estimates of water channels for the Atchafalaya and Terrebonne basins of the Mississippi River Delta in Louisiana, U.S.A. The data show channels with open water that are as narrow as 10 m. These channel estimates were generated from the Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR) Level 1B interferometric products in radar coordinates acquired in the Spring and Fall Delta-X deployments of 2021, which have a spatial resolution of approximately 6 m. UAVSAR is a polarimetric L-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) flown on the NASA Gulfstream-III aircraft. The data are provided in cloud-optimized GeoTIFF format. The channel estimates can be used to define open water paths in hydrodynamic models and to evaluate model performance.

Suspended and bedload transport in an open channel laboratory flume
<p>Notwithstanding the large number of studies on bedforms such as dunes and antidunes, performing quantitative predictions of bedform type and geometry remains an open problem. Here we present the results of laboratory experiments specifically designed to study how sediment supply and caliber may impact equilibrium bedform type and geometry in the upper regime. Experiments were performed in a sediment feed flume with flow rates varying between 8 l/s and 15 l/s, sand supply rates varying between 0.6 kg/min and 16 kg/min, uniform and non-uniform sediment grain sizes with geometric mean diameter varying between 0.22 mm and 0.87 mm. The experimental data and the comparison with datasets available in the literature revealed that the ratio of the volume transport of sediment to the volume transport of water <em>Qs</em>/<em>Qw</em> plays a prime control in the equilibrium bed configuration. The equilibrium bed configuration transitions from washed-out dunes (lower regime), to downstream migrating antidunes (upper regime) for <em>Qs</em>/<em>Qw</em> between 0.0003 and 0.0007. For values of <em>Qs</em>/<em>Qw</em> greater than those typical of downstream migrating antidunes, the bedform wavelength increases with <em>Qs</em>/<em>Qw</em>. At these high values of <em>Qs</em>/<em>Qw</em> equilibrium bed configurations with fine sand are characterized by upstream migrating antidunes or cyclic steps, and significant suspended load. In experiments with coarse sand, equilibrium is characterized by plane bed with bedload transport in sheet flow mode. Standing waves form at the transition between downstream migrating antidunes and bed configurations with upstream migrating bedforms. </p>
