Dataset of numerical model for enhancing stimulated Brillouin scattering in optical fibers

Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is useful, among others for generating slow light, sensing and amplification. SBS was previously viewed as a penalty due to the limitation on optical power in high-powered photonic applications. However, considering the many possible applications using SBS, it is now of interest to enhance SBS in areas of Brillouin frequency shift together with Brillouin Gain. A numerical model, using a fully vectorial approach, by employing the finite element method, was developed to investigate methods for enhancing SBS in optical fiber. This paper describes the method related to the numerical model and discusses the analysis between the interactions of horizontal, shear and hybrid acoustic modes; and optical modes in optical fiber. Two case studies were used to demonstrate this. Based on this numerical model, we report the influence of core radius, clad radius and effective refractive index on the Brillouin frequency shift and gain. We observe the difference of Brillouin shift frequency between a normal silica optical fiber and that of a tapered fiber where nonlinearities are higher. Also observed, the different core radii used and their respective Brillouin shift. For future work, the COMSOL model can also be used for the following areas of research, including simulating "surface Brillouin shift" and also to provide in-sights to the Brillouin shift frequency vB of various structures of waveguides, e.g circular, and triangular, and also to examine specialty fibers, e.g. Thulium and Chalcogenide doped fibers, and their effects on Brillouin shift frequency.

This dataset includes the experiment and simulation data of a new structural health monitoring system using distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) and Isogeometric Analysis (IGA).

The experiment setup was a 5mm thick PVC pipe with a fiber optic cable wrapped around the outer surface of the pipe. The PVC pipe was subjected to an applied deformation and the distributed strains along the optical fiber was measured with a Neubrescope (NBX7031) instrument using Rayleigh backscattering technology.

The simulation was performed using the in-house code JWRIAN-IGA developed in Joining and Welding Research Institute, Osaka University. The simulated data includes deformation, stress and strain distributions of the pipe, and projected one-dimensional fiber strains. The visualization files are post-processed with ParaView software.

High-speed TIRF and 2D super-resolution structured illumination microscopy with large field of view based on fiber optic components

Super-resolved structured illumination microscopy (SR-SIM) is among the most flexible, fast, and least perturbing fluorescence microscopy techniques capable of surpassing the optical diffraction limit. Current custom-built instruments are easily able to deliver two-fold resolution enhancement at video-rate frame rates, but the cost of the instruments is still relatively high, and the physical size of the instruments based on the implementation of their optics is still rather large. Here, we present our latest results towards realizing a new generation of compact, cost-efficient, and high-speed SR-SIM instruments. Tight integration of the fiber-based structured illumination microscope capable of multi-color 2D- and TIRF-SIM imaging, allows us to demonstrate SR-SIM with a field of view of up to 150 × 150 μm2 and imaging rates of up to 44 Hz while maintaining highest spatiotemporal resolution of less than 100 nm. We discuss the overall integration of optics, electronics, and software that allowed us to achieve this, and then present the fiberSIM imaging capabilities by visualizing the intracellular structure of rat liver sinusoidal endothelial cells, in particular by resolving the structure of their trans-cellular nanopores called fenestrations.

Quasi-distributed fiber optic monitoring of thermo-hydro behavior of frozen loess for frost heave prediction

We developed a quasi-distributed fiber optic monitoring technology to investigate the thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) behaviors of frozen loess. A combined method was proposed to measure in-situ ice content, providing critical parameters for understanding THM coupled effects. To characterize the soil freezing-thawing process, we further carried out subsurface automated multiphysics monitoring at a site located on the Loess Plateau, China, during 2020/2021 winter by employing quasi-distributed fiber optic sensing arrays. The inner mechanism of frost heave was revealed via field monitoring data and correlation analysis, which directly promoted the development of a semiempirical frost heave prediction method. For this study area, the proposed method requiring only temperature data as inputs was validated using our field monitoring results.

The data presented here are the monitoring data of in-situ temperature, moisture content, and soil displacement. The results of frost heave prediction based on the field monitoring data are shown in the files.
