A map of global peatland extent created using machine learning (Peat-ML)
<p>Map of global peatland extent estimated by machine learning. The download includes both a netcdf file version and a GeoTIFF (as a zip archive)</p> <p>Abstract from associated paper:</p> <p>Peatlands store large amounts of soil carbon and freshwater, constituting an important component of the global carbon and<br> hydrologic cycles. Accurate information on the global extent and distribution of peatlands is presently lacking but is needed<br> by Earth System Models (ESMs) to simulate the effects of climate change on the global carbon and hydrologic balance. Here,<br> we present Peat-ML, a spatially continuous global map of peatland fractional coverage generated using machine learning<br> techniques suitable for use as a prescribed geophysical field in an ESM. Inputs to our statistical model follow drivers of<br> peatland formation and include spatially distributed climate, geomorphological and soil data, along with remotely-sensed<br> vegetation indices. Available maps of peatland fractional coverage for 14 relatively extensive regions were used along with<br> mapped ecoregions of non-peatland areas to train the statistical model. In addition to qualititative comparisons to other maps<br> in the literature, we estimated model error in two ways. The first estimate used the training data in a blocked leave-one-out<br> cross-validation strategy designed to minimize the influence of spatial autocorrelation. That approach yielded an average r<sup>2</sup><br> of 0.73 with a root mean squared error and mean bias error of 9.11% and -0.36%, respectively. Our second error estimate<br> was generated by comparing Peat-ML against a high-quality, extensively ground-truthed map generated by Ducks Unlimited<br> Canada for the Canadian Boreal Plains region. This comparison suggests our map to be of comparable quality to mapping<br> products generated through more traditional approaches, at least for boreal peatlands.</p>
Soil gas concentration and flux data from two peatland forest harvesting experiments in Southern Finland
<p>The dataset contains data analyzed in a scientific manuscript Peltoniemi et al., <em>Soil CO<sub>2</sub>, CH<sub>4</sub> and N<sub>2</sub>O concentrations and fluxes in peatland forests are associated with water table level - implications of selection harvesting on soil emissions</em>, in review.</p> <p>The data was collected from two peatland forests. The sites Lettosuo (60.63° N, 23.95° E ) and Paroninkorpi (61.01°N, 24.75°E) locate in southern Finland, and they are fertile drained spruce mires. Both sites have unharvested control and selection harvested treatments.</p> <p>The dataset contains CO<sub>2</sub>, CH<sub>4</sub>, N<sub>2</sub>O and O<sub>2</sub> concentrations analyzed by gas chromatograph from soil gas samples collected with silicon rubber tubes inserted into soil at different depths over the year 2018-2020. The dataset additionally contains soil gas flux measurements in 2020 with a portable gas analyzer. Marcell Experimental Forest biweekly surface water and monthly porewater chemistry at Bog Lake Peatland, 2007 - ongoing
This data set reports the chemistry of surface and porewater water from the Bog Lake peatland in the Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF) in Itasca County, Minnesota, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station. Surface water has been collected about every other week since 2007 from a pool of water and sampling is ongoing. Once covered with ice, water was typically sampled once a month. Porewaters at five depths (0 to 2 m depths) have been collected about monthly from three different nest of piezometers since 2013, though never when samplers were frozen. Samples are measured for pH, specific conductivity, anions (chloride, sulfate), cations (calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, aluminum, iron, manganese, strontium), silicon, nutrients (ammonium, nitrate, soluble reactive phosphorus, total nitrogen, total phosphorus), and total organic carbon.
Alaskan Peatland Experiment (APEX): Static chamber methane fluxes from fen sites, 2005-2011 and 2015-2016
Methane fluxes were collected at APEX rich fen during the summers of 2005 - 2011 and 2015-2016. APEX Fen is located in the Bonanza Creek LTER outside of Fairbanks, AK. APEX Fen uses a full-factorial water table (flooded or raised, lowered or drained, and control treatments, as well as a moisture gradient). A warming manipulation (warmed, unwarmed treatment) was in place in 2005-2011, but ceased by 2014. In 2015, vegetation manipulation subplots were installed within the water table treatments.

This dataset lists all vascular plants present at the Alaska Peatland Experiment identified as of fall 2010. Non vascular plant growth forms are also included, as well as the relative location for each species or growth form. Data can be sorted by species, growth form or location. Two peatland types are represented; a bog and a fen . Within the fen site a water table manipulation has been ongiong since 2005, with control, lowered and raised water table treatment plots. At the bog there is a plot established within the lowland black spruce permafrost plateau, and two plots established within collapse scars embedded within the plateau. This dataset contains abundance for vascular and non vascular plants at the Alaska Peatland Experiment in 2007 and 2009. Two peatland types are included, a bog site and a fen site. Within the fen site a water table manipulation has been ongiong since 2005, with control, lowered and raised water table treatment plots. Measurements collected in 2007 included quadrats passively warmed using open top chamebr (OTC), although these quadrats were not measured in 2009. Data at the bog was measured in 2009, and plots include an area established within the lowland black spruce permafrost plateau (permafrost), and two plots established within collapse scars embedded within the plateau. One collapse scar formed ~ 45 years ago (old collapse) and the other formed ~ 25 years ago based upon aerial photography provided by the BCEF LTER. The data provided in this data set can be sorted by year, site and plot, in addition to warming treatment.

Alaskan Peatland Experiment (APEX): Static chamber methane fluxes from bog sites, 2008-2011
This dataset includes the static chamber methane fluxes collected from 2008-2011 at the APEX bog site. The bog site includes three types of bogs: a permafrost bog (broken into a control and experimental area), a new collapse site (NW, Nwref, and SW), and an old collapse site (NE and SE). Static chambers are fluxed for methane approximately weekly at the collapse sites and monthly at the permafrost sites. The flux is calculated the linear change in concentration within the chamber over a 30 minute period. The flux is reported as mgCH4/m2/d.
Alaska Peatland Experiment: Biweekly flux data and environmental measurements (soil temperature, soil moisture, seasonal thaw depth, water table depth)
This dataset contains ecosystem respiration data measured biweekly at the Alaska Peatland Experiment (APEX) gradient plots. Five plots encompass the gradient all changing in dominant vegetation type. Plot labels are as follows: BS (Black Spruce), WB (Shrub), TG (Grass), EC (Sedge/forb), Control (Rich fen). Data set also includes environmental data (soil temperature, soil moisture, seasonal thaw depth, water table depth) taken at the same time as each flux.

The root respiration experiment was used to partition root respiration from ecosystem respiration at the control plot.
