Data from: Evaluating the foraging performance of individual honey bees in different environments with automated field RFID systems
<p>Measuring the individual foraging performances of pollinators is crucial to guide environmental policies that aim at enhancing pollinator health and pollination services. Automated systems have been developed to track the activity of individual honey bees, but their deployment is extremely challenging. This has limited the assessment of individual foraging performances in full-strength bee colonies in the field. Most studies available to date have been constrained to use downsized bee colonies located in urban and suburban areas. Environmental policy-making, on the other hand, needs a more comprehensive assessment of honey bee performances in a broader range of environments, including in remote agricultural and wild areas. Here we detail a new autonomous field method to record high quality data on the flight ontogeny and foraging performance of honey bees, using Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID). We separate bee traffic into returning and exiting tunnels to improve data quality, solving many previous limitations of RFID systems caused by traffic jams and the parasitic coupling of RFID antennae. With this method, we assembled a large RFID dataset made of control bee colonies from experiments conducted in different locations and seasons. We hope our results will be a starting point to understand how ontogenetic and environmental factors affect the individual performances of honey bees, and that our method will enable the large-scale replication of individual pollinator performance studies.</p>
Experimental performance evaluation of supercritical CO2 in brazed plate heat exchangers of the tri-partite gas cooler
<p>The experimental data of three brazed plate <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/heat-exchanger">heat exchangers</a> serving as the gas coolers in a CO<sub>2</sub> system are investigated. The heat exchangers function for the DHW reheating, SH heating, and DHW preheating. The effects of the CO<sub>2</sub> <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/inlet-pressure">inlet pressure</a>, CO<sub>2</sub> <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/inlet-temperature">inlet temperature</a>, CO<sub>2 </sub><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/mass-flowrate">mass flow rate</a>, water inlet temperature, and water <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/mass-flowrate">mass flow rate</a> are analyzed. Results from Performance Evaluation and Testing of Virtual Infrastructure Managers
<p>NFV leverages Cloud Computing principles to move the data-plane network functions from expensive, closed and proprietary hardware to so-called Virtual Network Functions (VNFs). We deal with the management of virtual computing resources (Unikernels) for the execution of VNFs. This functionality is performed by the Virtual Infrastructure Manager (VIM) in the NFV MANagement and Orchestration (MANO) reference architecture. In this data set we report the results of a performance evaluation we have realized of three open source VIMs, namely OpenStack, Nomad and OpenVIM; both considering stock and the tuned versions. The VIMs and the performance evaluation tools that we employ are provided openly and can be downloaded from our repositories (<a href="https://github.com/superfluidity/openvim4unikernels">https://github.com/superfluidity/openvim4unikernels</a> and <a href="https://github.com/netgroup/vim-tuning-and-eval-tools">https://github.com/netgroup/vim-tuning-and-eval-tools</a>).</p>

<p>Here, we illustrate the modeling and experimental results for vertical Total Electron Content (TEC) over Mexico during the five year period 2018-2022. The results were obtained for the UCOE GNSS receiver station (geographic coordinates: 19.6°N; 101.68°W ). The calculations were made each two hours during the whole period under considerations. The modeling results were obtained using the "International Reference Ionosphere (IRI)" model, which is an empirical climatological model based on ground and space observations of the ionosphere [Bilitza et al., 2022].</p>

<p>These data sets contain evaluation data for the evaluation objectives performance, scalability and availability of different cloud-hosted, distributed DBMS. </p> <p>The data sets contain the raw performance metrics, monitoring data and evaluation metadata. For the higher-level evaluation objectives scalability and availability, supportive plots are provided.</p> <p><br> The performance and scalability evaluations have been carried out with the <a href="https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3297663.3310303">Mowgli framework</a> and the availability evaluation have been carried out with the <a href="https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3341105.3373968">King Louie framework</a>.</p>

Many studies that empirically evaluate the performance of such FaaS platforms have started to appear but we are currently lacking a comprehensive understanding of the overall domain. To address this gap, we conducted a multivocal literature review (MLR) covering 112 studies from academic (51) and grey (61) literature. We find that existing work mainly studies the AWS Lambda platform and focuses on micro-benchmarks using simple functions to measure CPU speed and FaaS platform overhead (i.e., container cold starts). Further, we discover a mismatch between academic and industrial sources on tested platform configurations, find that function triggers remain insufficiently studied, and identify HTTP API gateways and cloud storages as the most used external service integrations. Following existing guidelines on experimentation in cloud systems, we discover many flaws threatening the reproducibility of experiments presented in the surveyed studies. Using genomics to optimise and evaluate the performance of underwater forest restoration
<p>1. Restoration is an emerging intervention to reverse the degradation and loss of marine habitat-formers and the ecosystem services they underpin. Current best practice seeks to restore populations by transplanting donor individuals chosen to replicate genetic diversity and structure of extant, nearby populations. However, genetic characteristics are rarely empirically examined across generations, despite their potential role in influencing restoration success.</p> <p>2. We used genomics to design a restoration program for lost underwater forests of Phyllospora comosa, a dominant forest-forming macroalga that went locally extinct from reefs off Sydney, Australia. Population genetic diversity and structure of nearby extant populations informed choice of donor sites. We tested whether donor provenance influenced adult transplant survival, condition (via metrics of epibiosis) and the genetic characteristics of recruits at restoration sites.</p> <p>3. Extant populations of Phyllospora within a 100 km radius of Sydney comprised three distinct genetic clusters with similar levels of genetic diversity. We transplanted reproductive adults from two of these sites, with the aim of restoring five Phyllospora forests with levels of genetic structure and diversity similar to donor populations.</p> <p>4. Donor provenance influenced survival and condition of transplanted adults and recruitment levels varied significantly among restoration sites. Yet, recruitment was rapid and genetic diversity and structure of the F1 generation resembled extant populations. This likely occurred because transplanted individuals reproduced synchronously and rapidly post-transplantation, prior to mortality of adult donor transplants.</p> <p>5. Synthesis and applications: As restoration and the need to "future-proof" marine ecosystems increase globally, it will be critical to understand the role of genetic diversity and structure in restoration success. This study demonstrates that evidence-based selection of donor macroalgal forests for restoration using genomics can result in levels of genetic diversity and structure in the F1 generation that resemble extant populations. However, further refinement of transplantation techniques to maximise recruitment is also needed.02-Jun-2020</p>

<p>The objective of this work was to use the autocorrelation function to assess the fine motor performance of a healthy control group (CG) and people with Parkinson's disease (PD), whose fluctuations caused by the disease compromise motor skills, performed mainly by the hands and fingers essential for daily activities such as dressing, carrying objects and taking care of personal hygiene. For this, accelerometer signals were collected while the volunteers drew a sinusoidal pattern. The correlogram was estimated and two features were calculated from it: (i) the normalized area under the curve (𝑨𝒖𝑪); (ii) the difference between matching peaks and valleys from the reference and estimated correlograms (𝒗𝒎𝒎). These features allowed for the discrimination between drawing patterns of CG (𝒗𝒎𝒎= 0.154±0.063, 𝑨𝒖𝑪 = 0.204±0.040) and PD (𝒗𝒎𝒎 = 0.239±0.085, 𝑨𝒖𝑪 = 0.179±0.033) groups. Following the verification of normality (Shapiro-Wilk, p > 0.05), the t-test was applied to confirm the significant differences between groups (p < 0.05). The Cohen’s d effect size (p < 0.05) was medium (0.730) for 𝑨𝒖𝑪 and large (1.252) for 𝒗𝒎𝒎. This further confirms the differences between the features extracted from the groups. Therefore, the features 𝑨𝒖𝑪 and 𝒗𝒎𝒎 estimated from the autocorrelation function are effective for the assessment of the motor performance of healthy individuals and people with PD. </p>
