Size 103/4 in. by 6 in.; foll. 40. Nineteen lines in a page. The Poems of MAJNÛN ‘AMIRÎ (Ḳais b. al-Mulawwaḥ), accompanied by the history of the loves of Majnûm and Laila. This collection is probably identical with the ديوان قيس بن عامر المجنون , mentioned in Ḥ. Kh. iii. 302.1 It is chiefly founded on the authority of Abu Bakr Wâlibî, who is mentioned at the beginning as follows: قال ابوبكر الوالبى كان من حديث مجنون العامرى وليلى العامرية الخ. As appears from fol. 33v., Wâlibî got his information from the famous Isḥâḳ b. Ibrâhîm Mauṣilî (d. A.H. 235). Conclusion : هذا ما تناهى الينا من اخبار المجنون و اشعاره و ما كان خارجاً عمّا لم نكتبه فانّها منحولةٌ عليه من قصيدة او خبر. Quite a modern copy, clearly written, but very incorrect. It was apparently taken from a mutilated MS. On foll. 15v., 19v., and 20 are lacunas. [Bibl. Twenty-five lines in a page. كتاب كمامة الزهر و صدفة الدرر فى شرح القصيدة البسّامة ( sic ) الملقّبة بطوق الحمامة و شارحها الفقيه الكاتب الاريب الاديب ابى ( ابو . r ) مروان عبدالملك ابن عبدالله بن بدرون الحضرمى السلبى ( sic ) شكر الله سعيه الخ. ‘Abd al-malik b. ‘Abdallah IBN BADRÛN’S Historical Commentary on the Ḳaṣîdah of ‘Abd al-majîd b. ‘Abdallah Ibn ‘Abdûn (d. A.H. 529). Cf. Professor Dozy’s edition (Leyden, 1846). Well written, by Hâdi b. Sa’îd b. ‘Abdallah الصياى الصعدى (sic). Dated Monday, 24th Rabî’ I., 996. Although this MS. is revised throughout , it appears to be not more accurate than other copies of this work.1 Moreover, in the passages referring to ‘Alî, Ḥusain, etc., there are many interpolations, which are apparently due to a Shî’ite copyist. The exordium is also different from the common one. It begins as follows: الحمد لله الملك القديم المعبود ‘ الصمد القدير المقصود. The beginning is ornamented, and the other pages are within coloured lines. On the title-page is a round ornament in gold, with an inscription, which latter is, however, nearly effaced.   1 Cf. Size 9 in. by 51/4 in.; foll. 137. Eight, seventeen, and nineteen lines in a page. I.Foll. 1-5. Mu’în al-dîn Aḥmad b. ‘Abd al-razzâḳ ṬANṬARÂNÎ’S Ḳaṣîdah in praise of Niẓâm al-mulk (d. A.H. 485). It was published by De Sacy in his Chrestomathic, vol. ii. Plainly written, by Muḥammad ‘Ârif Mangalkûtî, A.H. 1134, at Dehli ( في بلدة دار الخلافة ) . Marginal notes. The MS. is much injured by damp, and has partly become illegible. II.Foll. 7-12. A short Commentary on an erotic Ḳaṣîdah, called اليتيمة , or the Orphan ; by ‘ABD AL-ḤAḲḲ B. ‘ABD AL-LAṬÎF ZUBAIRÎ. The Ḳaṣîdah begins: اراك طروباً والهاً كالمتيَّمِ تطوف باكناف السجاف المخيَّمِ It is stated at the beginning of the commentary, that the poem was called the Orphan, because the author of it was not known. It is also mentioned there that two verses of it are quoted in Ḥarîrî’s preface to his Maḳâmât. Now in the commentary on that work, 1 these verses are attributed to ‘ADÎ B. AL-RIḲÂ ‘, ‘Âmilî, a contemporary of Jarîr,2 and to the same the whole Ḳaṣîdah is ascribed in a note at the end of this MS. But the two verses given in the said commentary as those immediately preceding the quotation do not agree with the present text. It is probable, therefore, that the Ḳaṣîdah is supposititious, and only framed on the metre and rhyme of the old verses found in Ḥarîrî, which have been put at the end of the composition. III.Foll. 16-136. ZAUZANÎ’S Commentary on the Mu’allaḳât, with glosses. The Mu’allaḳâh of ‘Amr stands here after that of ‘Antarah. Some of the verses have been omitted; hence arose some confusion in the text (fol.125). On the few leaves which precede this piece are added a list of contents and various notes. Written in Nasta’liḳ, partly on red paper; the text of the poems in a large Naskh. This is the copy of one Muḥammad Yûsuf. It was transcribed A.H. 1133, during the reign of Muḥammad Shâh, at Dehli (در دار الخلافة) . The seal of Muḥammad Yûsuf is impressed on nos. II. And III. Zuhair’s Ḳaṣîdah in praise of Muḥammad, بانت سعاد . This commentary is different from that published by Lette and Freytag. Tabrîzî (d. A.H. 502) is quoted at the beginning of the introduction, on the authority of his pupil Jawâliḳî (d. A.H. 539); اخبرنا الشيخ الامام الاجل الاوحد ابو منصور موهوب 1 بن احمد بن محمد بن الخضر وفّقه الله تعالى لمرضاته الخ. The relation of Tabrîzî is founded on the following Isnâd: Abu Muḥammad Ibn al-Ḥasan Jauharî (d. A.H.454) , Abu ‘Omar Muḥammad b. al-’Abbâs b. Zakarîyâ b. Ḥaiyawaih (date, 1st Ṣafar, 327), al-‘Abbâs b. Zakarîyâ b. Ḥaiyawaih, ‘Abdallah b. ‘Amr, Ibrâhîm b. al-Mundhir, al-Ḥajjâj Muzanî,2 son of al-Raḳîbah b. ‘Abd al-raḥmân b. Ka’b, and great-grandson of the poet. This commentary, therefore, may be the work of Tabrîzî, or rather an abridgment of it. Cf. Cat. Mus. Brit. 316, DCXLV., no. lii. Closely written in Nasta’liḳ; the first ten foll. By a different hand. On the last fol. are two facetious poems, describing woman in various ages, from ten to a hundred years. Size 63/4 in. by 33/4 in.; foll. 284. Fifteen lines in a page. I.Foll.1-161. The greater portion of al-Ḥusain b. Aḥmad ZAUZANÎ’S (d. A.H. 486) Commentary on the Mu’allaḳât. It breaks off in the Mu’allaḳah of ‘Amr b. Kulthûm. The last verses of this poem are, however, added at the end, with a conclusion (تمت القصائد) . II.Foll. 162-203. The remaining Mu’allaḳahs of ‘ANTARAH and AL-ḤÂRITH, with another commentary. One leaf is missing after fol. 180, with the end of the former, and part of the introduction to the latter, poem. The commentary appears to be an abridgment of Tabrîzî’s commentary. 1 As in the latter, there follow here three other poems, which are not unfrequently added to the ‘‘Seven,’’ viz.:--- a.Foll. 204-212. The Ḳaṣîdah in ب of ‘ABÎD B. AL-ABRAṢ, which, as is also stated here , stands occasionally in the place of the Mu’allaḳah of al-Ḥârith. It is preceded by a historical introduction on the authority of Muḥammad b. ‘Amr Shaibânî, which is also found in Tabrîzî.2 b.Foll. 213-222. The Ḳaṣîdah in د of AL-NÂBIGHAH, or no. 1 of the Dîwân , as edited by H. Derenbourg (Paris, 1869). It was published by De Sacy in his Chrestomathic Arabe , vol. ii. c.Foll. 224-237. The Ḳaṣîdah in ل Of AL-A’SHA. It was published by De Sacy, l.c. III.Foll. 238-270. A Commentary on the Ḳaṣîdah لامية العجم , of al-Ḥusain b. ‘Ali Ṭughrâ’î (d. about A.H. 514). This is an abridgment (تلخيص ) of the commentary of Jamâl al-dîn Muḥammad b. Mûsa Damîrî (d. A.H. 808). The author gives his name at the end as MUḤAMMAD B. AL-KHALÎL Kâzarûnî, of al-Aḥsâ. IV.Foll. 270-284. The celebrated Ḳaṣîdah لامية العرب , attributed to AL-SHANFARA. It was published by De Sacy, l.c. Many glosses. Verses 51-54, which are omitted in their proper place, are added at the end. Neatly written in Nasta’liḳ, the text of the poems in Naskh and in red. The copy was made by Muḥammad Ma’ṣûm Ḥusainî Shîrâzî Manṣûrî, son of Niẓâm al-dîn Aḥmad Dashtakî, for his own use. Date A.H. 1072. Injured by insects. [Johnson.]     1 See Catal. Mus. Dated end of Rajab, 991. The copy was made by Rabî’ b. Sulaimân b. ‘Alî Barâshî, for Majd al-dîn Ḳabânî Yamanî. This MS. came, A.H. 1112, into the possession of Muḥammad Chelebi.. , commonly called Tiryâḳî, of Bûlâḳ, who collated it with three other copies. One of these had been collated with the archetype, A.H. 654. This latter collation is noticed at the end of each Maḳâmah. Some explanations were transcribed from the same copy. Tiryâḳî finished his collation at the end of Ṣafar, 1118. He also added the epilogue of Ḥarîrî, 1 and his الرسالة السينية . 2 A notice of the author is written on the fly-leaf. [Bibl. Begins: (قال) ابو الطيّب احمد بن الحسين المتنبى رحمه الله و مولده بالكوفة فى كندة سنة ثلاث و ثلثمائة يمدح سيف الدولة و كان امره باجازة ابيات على هذا الوزن و هذا الروى عذل العواذل حول قلبى التائه و هوى الاحبّة منه فى سودائه with which compare the beginning of the commentary of ‘Ukbarî (printed at Calcutta, A.H. 1261), Cat. Mus. Brit. 280, and Cat. Upsal. 76. Well written. Dated A.H. 1017 [=1608-09 CE]. Diacritical points occasionally omitted. Vowel-points irregularly and not always carefully added. Fol. 112 mutilated. A circumstantial account of the text of this MS. is given at the end (foll. 152-154). It was derived from two copies, one of which had been written by Rajâ b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Marzubân, and collated – among other اصول with a copy which had been read to Mutanabbi’, and again to Ibn Jinnî. The other copy had been verified by Mutanabbi’ himself. See, regarding this work, Flügel, Hdss. Wien, i. 409. 1 It was printed at Teheran, A.H. 1266, 2 and recently at Bûlâḳ (s.a.). It contains both Arabic and Persian extracts. Neatly written in Nasta’liḳ. A splendid ornament on the first page, and gold and blue lines round the others. Explanations of words and various notes are added on the margin. Ends: هذا آخر ما وجد من المجلد الاول من الكشكول و يتلوه المجلد الثانى و الحمد لله ... فى سنة ست و اربعين و الف من الهجرة. This, however, appears to be the colophon of the copy from which this MS. was taken. 1 The title-page has been covered by another leaf, but the seal and signature of Muḥammad ‘Askarî, a servant of Shâh ‘Âlam (I.), may still be seen through the latter. ṢÂDIḲ'S (flourished about the beginning of the tenth century, in Egypt) السحر الحلال من ابداع الجلال , that is, a selection from his Dîwân (which is entitled ابداع الجلال في السحر الحلال), preceded by five dissertations (مقدّمة) , which are inscribed as follows : I.فى فضل العقل وما ورد فى شرفه من النقل ; II. فى علوم الادب و ما ورد فيها من القول المنتخب ; III. فيما روت فيه الصحابة من الحديث و مزجت منه القديم بالحديث IV.فى نبذة ممّا انتخبته من بعض القصائد و المقاطيع الحسان التى هى فى جيد الزمان كفرائد الدرّ وقلائد العقيان ; V.فى بعض قصائد مبدعة و معارضتى لها بقصائد بديعة مخترعة Only these dissertations are contained in the present volume. The last two, as is indicated by their titles, consist merely of poetical extracts. IV. contains, among others, long selections from the Dîwâns of Kamâl al-dîn Ibn Nabîh, Ibn Nubâtah, Mutanabbi’, and Ṣafî al-dîn Ḥillî. V. gives, besides Ḳaṣîdahs of the authors just mentioned, some of (Sulṭân) Ḳâniṣauh Ghaurî, Maḥmud b. Âghâ, Shihâb Manṣûrî, Shihâb al-dîn Aḥmad b. Mas’ûd Nâbulusî, and the author himself. The Dîwân of the author was divided into five chapters (باب) as follows : I. فى القصائد ; II. فى الموشّحات و المخمّسات ; III. فى الالغاز و المطارحات ; IV. فى المراثى ; V. فى المقاطيع . The preface begins: قال الفقير الى رحمة ربّه المحبّ الصادق محمد بن قانْصَوه بن صادق غفر الله ذنوبه .... الحمد لله المانّ على البلغاء بصحاحِ بيانِ معانى بديعِ تخيّلِ اختراعِ المقال ‘ Cf. on the author and another work of his, Cat. A.H. 632), JA’BARÎ (Burhân al-dîn Ibrâhîm b. ‘Omar, d. A.H. 732), ‘ABD AL-LAṬÎF BAKRÎ, etc. Many of the poems are anonymous. III.Foll. 101-142. The Poems of ḤÂJIRÎ (Ḥusâm al-dîn ‘Îsa b. Sanjar b. Bahrâm Irbilî, d. A.H. 632), collected and arranged in seven books, by ‘Omar b. Muḥammad Dimishḳî. See Cat. Lugd. ii. 68, and Ḥ. Kh. iii. 271. The collection is here entitled مسارح الغزلان الحاجرية. Written in a small hand, resembling that of the preceding piece. Headings in yellow and red. IV. Foll. 143-150. A fragment of a Poetical Collection. Many of the poems contained in it are of the kind called تخميس . Written like the preceding piece. The remaining leaves of the volume are filled with various poems, which were added from time to time, by different hands. Twenty-one lines in a page. كتاب شرح بردة المديح للامام العلامة الشيخ خالد الازهرى النحوى الخ A Commentary on the Burdah, by (Zain al-dîn) KHÂLID (b. ‘Abdallah) AZHARÎ (d. A.H. 905), who wrote it A.H. 903. Cf. Ḥ. Kh. iv. 526. The worthlessness of this compilation is pointed out by Ralfs, die Burda, p. 25. The preface begins: اما بعد حمد الله المستحق التحميد ( sic ) الخ. The author gives in it an account of the origin of the poem. The text is given in portions, according to the connexion of the verses. The commentary is very circumstantial at the beginning. It consists usually of three sections: explanation of words, grammatical analysis (الاعراب) , and general interpretation (معنى البيت) . This copy is rather carelessly executed, and only the earlier portion of it has been emended. A Persian translation of verses is added on the margin, by a different hand.
