Demonstrator of a rotor-fed asynchronous start for a Salient Pole Wound Field Synchronous Machine

The video shows the asynchronous run-up (up to ca. 620 rpm) of a four pole, 60 kVA, 400V, 50 Hz salient pole synchronous generator. The run-up is obtained by AC-supplying a special rotor winding arrangement, capable of both exciting the machine at synchronism and providing a multiphase rotating MMF during the run-up. The armature phases, which have two parallel current paths, are conveniently short-circuited during the rotor acceleration.

Effect of thinning pole stands on soil processes in southern Oregon, central Coast Range, and central western Cascades of Oregon (1994-1995 BLM Study)

This study was conducted in different regions to determine if climatic regimes alter the effects of thinning pole stands. Forest managers are currently faced with increasingly complex demands in designing sulvicultural approaches that fulfill the need to maintain and in some cases, enhance forest health. As mature and old-growth forests with their high degree of structural heterogeneity are replaced by younger plantations with much simpler structure, there is concern that key habitat components are being lost for a number of plants and animals. A silviculture technique that could be used to increase the structural complexity of young stands to thin them; encouraging the development of higher structural complexity. The main purposes of this study is to determine how thinning pole stands influence below-ground processes. The central research question was whether or not this manipulation brings soil characteristics closer to those found in old-growth forests; in essence, accelerating the onset of old-growth-like characteristics via forest management.

Optimizing the Geometric Configuration and Manufacturing Process of High Mast Illumination Poles

This work presents the development of a high-fidelity model that accounts for the cumulative effect of welding and hot- dip galvanizing on the determining the resulting residual stresses and deformations induced during the manufacturing process of high mast illumination poles (HMIPs). This model is meant to elucidate the root causes of weld toe cracks in HMIPs. A TxDOT pole-to-base plate connection detail was used as the reference model in the analysis. Welding was modeled using the plug-in Abaqus Welding Interface (AWI), which automatically implements a series of sequential thermal and mechanical analyses. Then, the welding stress results were used as initial input to the galvanizing analysis. The cumulative stress results were compared against simulations that only considered the galvanizing process. A parametric study was then conducted to quantify the variation in the residual stresses and equivalent plastic strain magnitudes induced during the welding and galvanizing of HMIPs due to changes in welding and galvanizing practices. The results revealed that the cumulative effects of the different processes involved in the manufacturing of HMIPs contribute to the formation of galvanizing cracks in HMIPs. Also, increasing the dipping submersion speed during galvanizing and lowering the torch temperature magnitude during welding results in fewer zones prone to cracking. Altering the angle of inclination effect did not have a significant impact on the results. Performing variations in the manufacturing practices used for the fabrication of HMIPs can contribute to reducing the extensive inspection procedures conducted post-galvanizing to identify cracks.

Daily flood discharge dataset for 10 basins in the Third Pole during 1981‒2100

This dataset describes the daily discharge during each river flood event in the 10 Third Pole basins (Indus, Yamuna, Upper Ganges, MahaKali, Karnali, Gandaki, Koshi, Brahmaputra, Salween, and Mekong) in the historical (1981‒2020) and future (2021‒2100). Pole finial, 12th-11th century BCE

Ancient Chinese bronze pole finial, 12th-11th century BCE, now in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art. From the finial's description on artsmia.org: "A combination of four masks appears on this bronze finial, which originally adorned the end of a pole. A forceful taotie (composite animal) mask with downward-facing C-shaped horns appears on one side of the top. This monster's face forms a mask on a human head; it has the broad nose typical of early masks. On the other side, a ram's head, with horns turned down, bites on a head resembling a taotie. This remarkable work demonstrates that men wore zoomorphic masks in ritual ceremony." More information: https://collections.artsmia.org/art/962/pole-finial-china Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab
