North Temperate Lakes LTER Bythotrephes longimanus spiny water flea population monitoring in Wisconsin and Minnesota 2009 - 2014

Three data tables are included describing population dynamics for Bythotrephes longimanus, spiny water flea, in Southern Wisconsin during invasion. General monitor took place in Lake Mendota, Lake Monona, Lake Waubesa, Lake Kegonsa, Stormy Lake, Gile Flowage, Lake Gogebic. Accompanying Bythotrephes morphological measurements from Lake Mendota monitoring efforts in 2011 and 2012. Included are individual measurements of body morphology and reproductive status for ~2,500 Bythotrephes collected from Lake Mendota in 2011 and 2012. Sediment cores from Lake Mendota were analyzed for spiny water flea evidence with age of sediment estimated.

Populist attitudes and other socio-political views and psychological traits of the UK population

<p>This dataset is the result of an original survey designed by an interdisciplinary team of researchers from National Universtity of Distance Education (UNED), University of Zaragoza, University of C&oacute;rdoba and University of Valencia.</p> <p>The goal of the survey was to better understand the relationship between populist attitudes and relevant socio-political and psychology items and indexes. The UK was selected as case study given the lack of similar studies in this country and the relevance of the data to better understand the political context that had been heavily impacted by the Brexit referendum and proces of separation from the European Union.</p> <p>The survey was theoretically informed and included among others:</p> <ul> <li>Populism, Elitism and Pluralism items by Akkerman et al. The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: These data describe the species abundance and size distributions of fishes surveyed as part of MCR LTER's annual reef fish monitoring program. This study began in 2005 and the dataset is updated annually. The abundances of all mobile taxa of fishes (Scarids, Labrids, Acanthurids, Serranids, etc.) observed on a five by fifty meter transect which extends from the bottom to the surface of the water column are recorded by a diver using SCUBA. The diver then swims back along a one by fifty meter section of the original transect line and records the abundances of all non-mobile or cryptic taxa of fishes (Pomacentids, Gobiids, Cirrhitids, Holocentrids etc). Surveys are conducted between 0900 and 1600 hours (Moorea time) during late July or early August each year. In 2006, divers also began to estimate the size (length) of each fish observed to the nearest half cm. Four replicate transects are surveyed in each of six locations on the forereef (two on each of Moorea's three sides), six locations on the backreef (two on each of Moorea's three sides) and on six locations on the fringing reef (two on each of Moorea's three sides) for a total of 72 individual transects. Transects are permanently marked using a series of small, stainless steel posts affixed to the reef. Transects on the forereef are located at a depth of approximately 12m, those on the backreef are located at a depth of approximately 1.5m and those on the fringing reef are located at a depth of approximately 10m. Quantifying changes in fish population stability using statistical early warnings of regime shifts

This data package describes long-term trends in metrics describing population stability and used as statistical early warnings of regime shifts in 29 fish species that inhabit the San Francisco Bay-Delta in central California, USA. Metrics used in this study include spatial synchrony, temporal coefficient of variation (CV), and lag-1 temporal autocorrelation. Trends were measured using ordinary least squares linear regression. These derived data were developed from abundance (as CPUE) time series based on three long-term fish monitoring studies included in https://doi.org/10.6073/pasta/a29a6e674b0f8797e13fbc4b08b92e5b; the Fall Midwater Trawl Survey, Delta Juvenile Monitoring Program, and Bay Study. Selected data were from fall months (September to December) in 1980-2023, from midwater trawl and beach seine surveys for which sampling effort (e.g., tow volume) was recorded. Data on fish exceeding maximum length thresholds for age-0 fish were discarded, except for white sturgeon, where the maximum length threshold corresponded to approximately 10 years of age, the onset of reproductive maturity. Observations from different sampling stations were aggregated into 10 sub-regions (South San Francisco Bay, Central San Francisco Bay, San Pablo Bay, Napa River, Suisun Bay, Delta Confluence, South Delta, North Delta, San Joaquin River, Sacramento River, and midwater trawl samples and beach seine samples were considered separately because the methods sample distinct habitat types. Combinations of sub-region and sampling method were considered distinct spatial units. EWI metrics were measured in 5-year rolling windows to permit assessment of changes over time. The temporal CV and lag-1 autocorrelation were measured on individual spatial unit time series, ignoring windows with >1 year of missing data. There are two tables available, providing different views of the same data: a long table having all values in one column and a wide table having a separate column for each dependent variable. Functional groups (i.e., dependent variables) counted are: Scleractinian Corals (by genus where appropriate, see methods), Macroalgae, Crustose Coralline Algae / Bare Space, Soft Corals, Hydrocorals (Millepora), Algal Turf and Sand. The coral community was sampled photographically in all habitats surrounding the island: Fringing Reef, Lagoon (Backreef), and Outer Reef (Forereef.) Fall 2020 crab population monitoring: mid-marsh and creek bank abundance based on crab hole counts at GCE marsh, monitoring sites 1-10

This data set is the Fall 2020 estimate of crab densities at the GCE-LTER marsh sites used for population monitoring. Crab abundance was determined by counting the number of crab holes within a 625 cm^2 quadrat and converting the counts to number per square meter. Counts were made in the mid-marsh and creek bank zones (n = 4 per zone) at GCE sites 1 through 10. Note that this census method does not differentiate which species made a particular hole and therefore only estimates total burrowing crab abundance, potentially including species Uca pugnax, Uca minax, Uca pugilator, Armases cinereum, Eurytium limosum and Sesarma reticulatum. Crab holes that are not actively maintained are quickly covered by tidal activity and other sediment disturbances, therefore plugged holes were assumed to be unoccupied and excluded from the counts.

Mollusc population abundance monitoring: Fall 2020 mid-marsh and creekbank infaunal and epifaunal mollusc abundance based on collections from GCE marsh, monitoring sites 1-10

This data set is the Fall 2020 estimate of infaunal and epifaunal mollusc abundance at the GCE-LTER marsh sites used for population monitoring. Species abundance was determined by hand-collecting all the infaunal and epifaunal molluscs from within quadrats of known area in mid-marsh and creekbank zones (n = 4 quadrats per zone) at all sites. The molluscs were returned to the lab, fixed in ethanol, transferred to and preserved in ethanol, counted and measured (size data is reported separately). The counts were converted to number per square meter. Gastropod species are listed first, followed by bivalve species. Size distribution data for these collections may be found in the GCE-LTER data set INV-GCEM-2107a.

Mollusc population size distribution monitoring: Fall 2020 mid-marsh and creekbank infaunal and epifaunal mollusc size distributions based on collections from GCE marsh monitoring sites 1-10

This data set is the Fall 2020 report of infaunal and epifaunal mollusc species size distributions at the GCE-LTER marsh sites used for population monitoring. Infaunal and epifaunal molluscs were hand-collected from within quadrats of known area from mid-marsh and creekbank zones (n = 4 quadrats per zone) at all sites. The molluscs were returned to the lab, preserved in ethanol, measured and counted (count data is reported separately). Length of each measurable individual was determined using calipers or an ocular micrometer mounted in a stereomicroscope. Species abundance and density data for these collections may be found in the GCE-LTER data set INV-GCEM-2107. Numbers of individuals of each species in the abundance data file may not correspond exactly to the numbers of individuals in the size data file because some individuals may not have been measureable.

Forest Change and Human Populations in New England 1600-2015

As part of retrospective studies of land-use across New England, information was compiled on forest cover and human population for the New England states. The states share a common history of deforestation for agriculture followed by farm abandonment and natural reforestation with the exception of northern Maine, which was never densely settled and largely remained forested. The extent to which these secondary forests differ in structure and function from permanently wooded areas or the forests of the pre-settlement period forms a major research emphasis of Harvard Forest studies.

CBP01 Variable distance line-transect sampling of bird population numbers in different habitats on Konza Prairie

Records of bird species based on line transect sampling, giving perpendicular distance of sighting from the transect line on 16 separate transects. Bird surveys were conducted 2-4 times per year in January, April, June, and October for a 29-year period from 1981 to 2009. Transects were designed to determine bird communities and population numbers associated with tallgrass prairie habitats with different experimental treatments (fire frequency, grazed by bison vs. ungrazed), riparian habitats on forest edge, and gallery forests dominated by oak woodland.

Microbial Observatory at North Temperate Lakes LTER Spatial and temporal cyanobacterial population dynamics in Lake Mendota 2009 - 2011

Toxic cyanobacterial blooms threaten freshwaters worldwide but have proven difficult to predict because the mechanisms of bloom formation and toxin production are unknown, especially on weekly time scales. Water quality management continues to focus on aggregated metrics, such as chlorophyll and total nutrients, which may not be sufficient to explain complex community changes and functions such as toxin production. For example, nitrogen (N) speciation and cycling play an important role, on daily time scales, in shaping cyanobacterial communities because declining N has been shown to select for N fixers. In addition, subsequent N pulses from N2 fixation may stimulate and sustain toxic cyanobacterial growth. Herein, we describe how rapid early summer declines in N followed by bursts of N fixation have shaped cyanobacterial communities in a eutrophic lake (Lake Mendota, Wisconsin, USA), possibly driving toxic Microcystis blooms throughout the growing season. On weekly time scales in 2010 and *2011, we monitored the cyanobacterial community in a eutrophic lake using the phycocyanin intergenic spacer (PC-IGS) region to determine population dynamics. In parallel, we measured microcystin concentrations, N2 fixation rates, and potential environmental drivers that contribute to structuring the community.

Production, biomass, and yield estimates for walleye populations in the Ceded Territory of Wisconsin from 1990-2017

Recreational fisheries are valued at $190B globally and constitute the predominant use of wild fish stocks in developed countries, with inland systems contributing the dominant fraction of recreational fisheries. Although inland recreational fisheries are thought to be highly resilient and self-regulating, the rapid pace of environmental change is increasing the vulnerability of these fisheries to overharvest and collapse. We evaluate an approach for detecting hidden overharvest of inland recreational fisheries based on empirical comparisons of harvest and biomass production. Using an extensive 28-year dataset of the walleye fisheries in Northern Wisconsin, USA, we compare empirical biomass harvest (Y) and calculated production (P) and biomass (B) for 390 lake-year combinations. Overharvest occurs when harvest exceeds production in that year. Biomass and biomass turnover (P/B) both declined by about 30% and about 20% over time while biomass harvest did not change, causing overharvest to increase. Our analysis revealed 40% of populations were production-overharvested, a rate about 10x higher than current estimates based on numerical harvest used by fisheries managers. Our study highlights the need for novel approaches to evaluate and conserve inland fisheries in the face of global change.

Rural population count at 1 km for 2000-2020 based on WorldPop and GHS-SMOD urbanization level

<p>Rural population count at 1 km grid in EPSG:4326 for 2000-2020 (annual). This is only an estimate of the rural population. This probably misses many rural areas, especially in the tropics. Data for The UNCOVER Survey: A First-Look HST+JWST Catalog of Galaxy Redshifts and Stellar Populations Properties Spanning 0.2 ≲ z ≲ 15

<p>The recent UNCOVER survey with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) exploits the nearby cluster Abell 2744 to create the deepest view of our universe to date by leveraging strong gravitational lensing. In this work, we perform photometric fitting of more than 50,000 robustly detected sources out to z ~ 15. We show the redshift evolution of stellar ages, star formation rates, and rest-frame colors across the full range of&nbsp;0.2 &lt; z &lt; 15.&nbsp;The galaxy properties are inferred using the Prospector&nbsp;Bayesian inference framework using informative Prospector-beta&nbsp;priors on masses and star formation histories to produce joint redshift and stellar populations posteriors, and additionally lensing magnification is performed on-the-fly to ensure consistency with the scale-dependent priors. We show that this approach produces excellent photometric redshifts with NMAD&nbsp;~&nbsp;0.03, of a similar quality to the established photometric redshift code EAzY. In line with the open-source scientific objective of the Treasury survey, we publicly release the stellar populations catalog with this paper, derived from the photometric catalog adapting aperture sizes based on source profiles. This release includes posterior moments, maximum-likelihood spectra, star-formation histories, and full posterior distributions, offering a rich data set to explore the processes governing galaxy formation and evolution over a parameter space now accessible by JWST.</p>
