Long‐term trends in gastropod abundance and biodiversity: Disentangling effects of press versus pulse disturbances

<p><strong>Aim</strong>: Climate-induced pulse (e.g., hurricanes) and press (e.g., global warming) disturbances represent threats to populations, communities, and the ecosystem services that they provide. We leveraged three decades of annual data on tropical gastropods to quantify the effects of major hurricanes, associated secondary succession, and global warming on abundance, biodiversity, and species composition.</p> <p><strong>Location</strong>: Luquillo Mountains, Puerto Rico.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>: Gastropod abundance, biodiversity, and composition were estimated annually for each of 27 years in a tropical montane forest that experienced three major hurricanes (Hugo, Georges, and Maria). Generalized linear mixed-effects, linear mixed-effects, and linear models evaluated population- and community-level responses to year, ambient temperature, understory temperature, hurricane, and time since hurricane. Variation partitioning determined the unique and shared variation in biotic responses associated with temperature, disturbance, and succession.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: Rather than declining, gastropod abundances generally increased through time, whereas the responses of biodiversity were weak and scale dependent. Hurricanes and associated secondary succession, rather than ambient atmospheric temperature, molded long-term trends in abundances and biodiversity.</p> <p><strong>Main conclusions</strong>: Global warming over the past 30 years has not progressed sufficiently to elicit significant responses by gastropods in the Luquillo Mountains. Rather, effects from pulse disturbances (i.e., hurricanes) and secondary succession currently drive long-term variation in abundance and biodiversity. Gastropods evince high resilience in this tropical ecosystem. Historical exposure to recurrent hurricanes likely imbued the fauna with broad niches that make them resistant to current levels of global warming. We predict that biotic resiliency will be challenged once changes in temperature exceed interannual and inter-habitat differences that typify this hurricane-mediated system, or combine with an increased frequency of hurricanes and droughts to alter associations among environmental characteristics that define the fundamental niches of species. Only then might significant declines in abundance or the appearance of novel communities characterize the gastropod fauna in the Luquillo Mountains.</p>

Data set. Testing Protest Paradigm in Femicide Protests in Mexican Press

<p>his Data set consist of the coding of 865&nbsp;articles from national Mexican newspapers, from El Universal, Reforma, and Exc&eacute;lsior. It is corresponding to research that analyzes the representation of the protests against femicide in the Mexican press, and the opportunities reached by the social movement in the public discourse. Previous studies found a tendency for negative representations of social movements in the media in the so-called &lsquo;protest paradigm&rsquo;, this means that the attention obtained does not necessarily guarantee the reproduction of the movement&rsquo;s discourse. We use the paradigm approach and test the degree of adherence. It registered media attention to the femicide issue for a period of 41 months in three national newspapers. The corpus was examined by using the qualitative&nbsp;content analysis technique, with variables that measure the stories&rsquo; emphasis, prominence, legitimation, and tone for social movements and authorities, to compare the two actors.</p>

"I'm something of an untrained, unofficial cultural anthropologist myself. Ihave a business interviewing people to capture their personal histories. I'm always interested how people fit into their world and how they affect their world. I'm a graphic designer who works in the same building as the printing presses that I recorded. Iwalk past the presses every day on my way to talk to the folks in the prepress department. I'm on friendly but not drinking terms with the pressmen. I'm a friend with the prepress manager. Three Heidelberg presses are installed side by side in an open warehouse-like room. The presses are about twenty feet long and about five feet high. With their series of four humps or mounds where each printing cylinder is located, the presses remind one of giant, gray, mechanical caterpillars. Each press has a cyan cylinder, a magenta cylinder, a yellow cylinder and a black cylinder – so the humps are brightly colored. The presses are well lit by banks of fluorescent lights hanging from the ceiling over each press. When you walk into the press room you hear the sound of rock music blaring from a boom box radio mixed with the general din of the presses. It is only when you walk up to a press like Idid for the recordings that you really start to hear the individual strains of clicking, clacking and mechanical, syncopated chattering. When I made my recordings I was intrigued by the subtle variations in the sounds produced by these machines that aren't apparent when you first walk through the door. The pressmen were kind enough to allow me to walk right up to the presses and poke my microphone quite close to the rotating press cylinders. Iuse a Danish Pro Audio microphone about the size of a pencil eraser. An extremely sensitive mic with the capacity for capturing loud sounds such as the presses up close. Ice Storm Mycorrhizal Fungi data for Yancey et al. in press

Extreme weather events, such as ice storms, are increasing and have potentially large impacts on forests, including belowground structures such as fine roots and mycorrhizal fungi. Many forest trees rely on the mutualistic relationship between mycorrhizal fungi and plants; a relationship that when disrupted can negatively impact tree net primary productivity. We took advantage of a large-scale ice storm manipulation in the northeastern United States (US) to test the hypothesis that increasing ice storm intensity and frequency would reduce ectomycorrhizal fungal root tips per unit root length and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal structures per unit root length, hereafter colonization. We found that ice storm intensity reduced spring ectomycorrhizal fungal and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal colonization. However, these patterns changed in the fall where ice storm intensity still reduced ectomycorrhizal fungal root tips, but arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal colonization was higher in ice storm treatments than controls. The amount of ectomycorrhizal fungal root tips and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal colonization differed seasonally: ectomycorrhizal fungal root tips were 1.7× higher in the spring than in the fall, while arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal colonization was 3× higher in the fall than in the spring. Our results indicate that mycorrhizal fungal colonization responses to ice storm severity vary temporally and by mycorrhizal fungal type. Further, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi may recover from ice storms relatively quickly, potentially aiding forests in their recovery, whereas ice storms may have a longer lasting impact on ectomycorrhizal fungi.

Model For A Press Mould

This is a wooden model aimed for the preparation of a sand mould. The sand mould would then be used to cast a cast-iron mould in two parts. The cast-iron mould will then be used to press a glass candle-holder with the shape of the interior cavity seen in this 3D-model. Data from: Aquatic ecosystem responds differently to press and pulse nutrient disturbances as revealed by a microcosm experiment

<p><span>Due to climate change and increasing anthropogenic activities, lakes are disturbed frequently, usually by press (e.g., diffused pollution, rising temperatures) or pulse (e.g., storms, rainfall, pollution events) disturbances. Both press and pulse disturbances can affect abiotic and biotic environments, changing the structure of ecosystems and affecting ecosystem services. To confront with the effects of climate change and increasing anthropogenic activities, understanding the different effects of press and pulse disturbances on lake ecosystems is essential. This study assessed the effect of press and pulse disturbances of phosphorus on a microcosmic </span><span>aquatic </span><span>eco</span><span>system</span><span> by measuring the total phosphorus (TP), algae density, and physiological indicators of submerged macrophytes. We found that the microcosmic aquatic ecosystem responded differently to press and pulse disturbances. Our results suggested that it had a lower resistance to pulse phosphorus disturbances than to press phosphorus disturbances. There were significantly higher nutrient concentrations and algal densities in the pulse treatment than in the press treatment. Positive feedback was found between the biomass of submerged macrophytes and the water quality. There was a higher submerged macrophytes biomass at low TP concentration and algal density. In the context of climate change, press and pulse disturbances could have severe impacts on lake ecosystems. Our findings will provide some insight for further research and lake management.</span></p>

Der Vorteil bestand darin, dass Pressvorgänge nur Sekundenbruchteile dauerten und hohe Pressdrücke erreicht werden konnten. So konnten ohne Arbeitsgänge wie Drehen, Bohren oder Fräsen Metallteile mit Relief oder Hohlräumen geformt werden. Uncommon Press

The Cary Collection cooperate with RIT's College of Engineering and the Museum Studies Program, organized a five-student reconstruction team, they looked for and visited such style presses stored in major museums in the United States, and eventually selected the circa 18th-century press as a prototype. After one year's efforts and under the help of volunteers, the wooden common press was finally successfully reconstructed in 2016. This press, together with other historical presses collected by the Cary Collection, perfectly demonstrated the development history of the printing press. The replica with a light-yellow oak wood was named " the uncommon press", and it was placed in the reading room outside of the Cary Collection as the Figure 3 shown.
