Trophic cascade driven by behavioural fine-tuning as naïve prey rapidly adjust to a novel predator

The arrival of novel predators can trigger trophic cascades driven by shifts in prey numbers. Predators also elicit behavioural change in prey populations, via phenotypic plasticity and/or rapid evolution, and such changes may also contribute to trophic cascades. Here we document rapid demographic and behavioural changes in populations of a prey species (grassland melomys Melomys burtoni, a granivorous rodent) following the introduction of a novel marsupial predator (northern quoll Dasyurus hallucatus). Within months of quolls appearing, populations of melomys exhibited reduced survival and population declines relative to control populations. Quoll-invaded populations (n = 4) were also significantly shyer than nearby, quoll-free populations (n = 3) of conspecifics. This rapid but generalised response to a novel threat was replaced over the following two years with more threat-specific antipredator behaviours (i.e. predator-scent aversion). Predator-exposed populations, however, remained more neophobic than predator-free populations throughout the study. These behavioural responses manifested rapidly in changed rates of seed predation by melomys across treatments. Quoll-invaded melomys populations exhibited lower per-capita seed take rates, and rapidly developed an avoidance of seeds associated with quoll scent, with discrimination playing out over a spatial scale of tens of metres. Presumably the significant and novel predation pressure induced by quolls drove melomys populations to fine-tune behavioural responses to be more predator-specific through time. These behavioural shifts could reflect individual plasticity (phenotypic flexibility) in behaviour or may be adaptive shifts from natural selection imposed by quoll predation. Our study provides a rare insight into the rapid ecological and behavioural shifts enacted by prey to mitigate the impacts of a novel predator and shows that trophic cascades can be strongly influenced by behavioural as well as numerical responses.

Known bugs and limitations in this dataset or the associated manuscript.

A small bug in RAPID v1.1.0 was discovered and fixed on 2011-07-16 that had an impact on the optimization of parameters when using forcing data to replace upstream simulations. This bug led to erroneous results for only two of the basins where upstream forcing was used: Garonne River Basin, downstream; and Rhone River Basin, downstream. The bug had no influence on: Loire River Basin, downstream, and Seine River Basin, downstream; or on any of the other simulations. This should not affect the conclusions of David et al. (2011) since only a few locations were impacted.

Funding

This work was partially supported by the French Mines Paristech, by the French Agence Nationale de la Recherche under the Vulnérabilité de la nappe du Rhin (VulNaR) project, by the French Programme Interdisciplinaire de Recherche sur l’Environnement de la Seine (PIREN-Seine) project, by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration under the Interdisciplinary Science Project NNX07AL79G, by the U.S. National Science Foundation under project EAR-0413265: CUAHSI Hydrologic Information Systems, and by the American Geophysical Union under a Horton (Hydrology) Research Grant.

Range expansion is slower and more variable with rapid evolution across a spatial gradient in temperature

Rapid evolution in colonizing populations can alter our ability to predict future range expansions. Recent theory suggests that the dynamics of replicate range expansions are less variable, and hence more predictable, with increased selection at the expanding range front. Here, we test whether selection from environmental gradients across space produces more consistent range expansion speeds, using the experimental evolution of replicate duckweed populations colonizing landscapes with and without a temperature gradient. We found that range expansion across a temperature gradient was slower on average, with range-front populations displaying higher population densities, and genetic signatures and trait changes consistent with directional selection. Despite this, we found that with a spatial gradient range expansion speed became more variable and less consistent among replicates over time. Our results therefore challenge current theory, highlighting that chance can still shape the genetic response to selection to influence our ability to predict range expansion speeds.

Rapid Landslide Risk Zoning toward Multi-Slope Units of the Neikuihui Tribe for Preliminary Disaster Management repository

Taiwan features steep terrain and a fragile geology environment accompanied by frequent earthquakes and typhoons annually. Meanwhile, with the booming economy and rapid population growth, activities pivot from metropolises to the Taiwan's suburban and mountain areas. However, for example, the Neikuihui tribe in northern Taiwan evolves landslide disasters during extreme rainfall events. To rapidly examine landslide risk in the tribe area for preliminary disaster management, the well-known principle of Risk, which comprises Hazard, Exposure, and Vulnerability, was carefully adapted to scrutinize 14 slope units around the Neikuihui tribe region. The framework of risk zoning is improved based on the previous quantified findings regarding the inventory of the deep-seated landslides in southern Taiwan. Moreover, the proposed procedures comprehensively assess susceptibility, activity, exposure, and vulnerability of each slope unit. The rapid risk zoning analysis of multi-slope units delivers a sloping unit with a high level of landslide risk, and this slope unit did suffer from landslide disasters in the 2016 typhoon event. This study preliminarily proves that the proposed framework and details of rapid risk zoning can help identify a relatively high-risk slope unit around a tribal region and address pre-countermeasures for disaster management.

Transferring energy signatures across space and time to assess their viability for rapid urban energy demand estimation

This data archive provides simulated hourly heating and cooling building energy demand for current and future RCP85 climate for 8 representative cities for a single-family and small office building archetype.

The data forms part of the following publication:

Eggimann S.; Fiorentini M. (2024): Transferring energy signatures across space and time to assess their viability for rapid urban energy demand estimation. Energy and Buildings. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.enbuild.2024.114348

Attributes

ID_origin: City ID of source city

ID_destination: City ID of target city

Signature_Cooling: Cooling demand determined by the signature approach

Model_Cooling: Cooling demand determined by EnergyPlus

Absolute_Diff: Absolute difference

Percentage_Diff: Relative difference

Daily_Tout: Average daily dry-bulb ambient temperature

Instruction

To obtain the simulation and energy signature-based results, it is required to filter the dataset and set the source ID to the destination ID.
