VEX DSN RADIO SCIENCE RAW DATA-ENT V1.0

This data set contains archival raw, partially processed, and ancillary/supporting radio science data acquired during the Extended Operations (ENT) phase of the Venus Express (VEX) mission using ground facilities of the NASA Deep Space Network (DSN). This data set will be combined with other data collected using antennas of the European Space Agency (ESA) and submitted to the ESA Planetary Science Archive. These observations were designed to determine the gravity field of Venus; density of the upper atmosphere through drag measurements; the temperature-pressure and absorption structure of the neutral Venus atmosphere; and the electron density profile of the ionosphere. No bistatic radar (BSR) and solar conjunction (SCO) observations were conducted during the ENT phase because of a 15 dB degradation in performance of the S-Band radio system in late 2006 (before ENT began). Of most interest in the ENT archive will be the Radio Science Receiver (RSR) files in the RSR directory, which provided the raw input to the radio occultation investigations of the neutral atmosphere and ionosphere, and the Orbit Data Files (ODFs), which provided the raw input to gravity and drag investigations. The ENT phase, for purposes of this archive, began after the completion of the Routine Operations Phase (2007-10-02, the end of the primary mission) and continued to the end of the VEX mission.

P12 V RADIO SCIENCE SUBSYSTEM RESAMPLED LOS GRAVITY V1.0

Line of sight (LOS) gravity data were obtained as part of the Radio Science Experiment by tracking 351 orbits of the Pioneer Venus Orbiter. The data set consists of a table with the following columns: spacecraft latitude, longitude (degrees), accelerations, and altitude (km). The acceleration data were determined from differentiation of raw Doppler residuals and are expressed as units of mm/s**2. To obtain LOS gravity in milligals, accelerations need to be multiplied by 100. An acceleration of 1.20 mm/s**2, therefore, corresponds to 120 mgal, a large gravity anomaly.

The radio observations were carried out using the LRO spacecraft and Earth-based stations of the commercial Universal Space Network (USN), the Ka-band ground station at White Sands, New Mexico (WS1), and the Next Generation Satellite Laser Ranging station in Greenbelt, Maryland (NGSLR). Additional data were provided by the NASA Deep Space Network (DSN) during commissioning. Ongoing participation by the International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS) network of stations provides further LR data that are processed by the Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) Science Operations Center (SOC). Of most interest are likely to be the Tracking Data Files in the TRK directory.

The radio observations were carried out using the ODY spacecraft and Earth-based receiving stations of the NASA Deep Space Network (DSN). The observations were designed to test the spacecraft radio system, the DSN ground system, and ODY operations procedures and to be used in reconstructing the spacecraft orbit, generating high-resolution gravity field models of Mars, and determining the nature of the near-Sun solar plasma. Of most interest are likely to be the Orbit Data Files in the ODF directory and the ionospheric and tropospheric media calibration files in the ION and TRO directories, respectively. The first ODF in the data set begins on 2002-01-06, which was actually in the late stages of the Aerobraking Phase and just before periapsis was lowered for about 2 weeks to about 200 km; the Mapping altitude was about 400 km. Data were delivered to PDS in approximately chronological order at the rate of 1-3 CD-WO volumes per month, of which about 0.01 GB/month were ODF's. By volume, the largest data type was either the Archival Tracking Data File (TDF; until early 2003) or the Tracking and Navigation File (TNF; beginning early 2003), both of which served as parents of the ODF.

MGS RADIO SCIENCE -- SCIENCE DATA PRODUCTS V1.0

This data set contains archival results from radio science investigations conducted during the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) mission. Radio measurements were made using the MGS spacecraft and Earth-based stations of the NASA Deep Space Network (DSN). The data set includes high-resolution spherical harmonic models of Mars' gravity field generated by groups at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Goddard Space Flight Center, covariance matrices for some models, and maps for some models; these results were derived from raw radio tracking data. Also included are profiles of atmospheric temperature and pressure and ionospheric electron density, derived from phase measurements collected during radio occultations. The data set also includes analyses of transient surface echoes observed close to occultations during the first few years of MGS operations. The atmospheric and surface investigations were conducted by Radio Science Team members at Stanford University. The data set also includes 93 line-of-sight acceleration profiles derived at JPL from radio tracking data collected near periapsis while Mars Global Surveyor was in its Science Phasing Orbit and below its nominal Mapping altitude of 400 km. The data were delivered to PDS in approximately chronological order at the rate of one CD-WO volume (typically 100 MB) every three months.
