Raw data for: Modes of grain number determination differentiate barely row-types

Gaining knowledge on intrinsic interactions of various yield components is crucial to improve the yield potential in small grain cereals. It is well known in barley that increasing the grain number (GN) preponderantly improves their yield potential; however, the yield components determining GN and their association in barley row-types are less explored. In this study, we assessed different yield components like potential spikelet number (PSN), spikelet survival (SSL), spikelet number (SN), grain set (GS), and grain survival (GSL), as well as their interactions with GN by using a selected panel of two- and six-rowed barley types. Also, to analyze the stability of these interactions, we performed the study in two growth conditions, greenhouse and field. From this study, we found that in two-rowed, GN determination is strongly influenced by PSN rather than SSL and/or GS in both growth conditions. Conversely, in six-rowed, GN is associated with SSL instead of PSN and/or GS. Thus, our study exemplified that increasing GN might be possible by augmenting PSN in two-rowed genotypes, while for six-rowed genotypes, the ability of SSL needs to be improved. We speculate that this disparity of GN determination in barley row-types might be due to the fertility of lateral spikelets. Collectively, this study revealed that GN of two-rowed largely depends on the developmental trait, PSN, while in six-rowed, it mainly follows the ability of SSL.

Row data from: Screening and response profile of Iraqi barley accessions under PEG- induced drought conditions

Among the abiotic stresses, drought influences plant growth and productivity, and plant stress responses depend on stress intensity and genotype. The effects of simulated drought stress on germination parameters were tested for tolerance and sensitivity in 59 barley accessions from all regions of Iraq and phenotypic, physiological and biochemical responses associated with drought stress were investigated. Stress treatments with polyethylene glycol (PEG) reduced the germination rate and dramatically delayed the development of the seedlings. Significant changes in the physiological and biochemical profiles in barley accessions were observed. A smaller reduction in water absorption of seeds was observed across all accessions, while all biochemical characteristics except total flavonoid content were increased with the increase in water deficiency in most accessions. Among the 59 barley accessions, ABN was the most tolerant accession, while Black-Garmiyan was the most drought-prone. Significant relationships were found between most trait pairs, with 32 significant associations under no stress, 39 significant correlations under the 10.25% PEG treatment, and 81 significant correlations under the 20.50% PEG treatment. According to the key importance analysis, seed water uptake, total phenol content, soluble sugar content and catalase are classified as relative significance traits for germination percentage, root and shoot length under stress conditions.

Data from: Low reversed cyclic loading tests for integrated precast structure of lightweight wall with single-row reinforcement under a lightweight steel frame
Given the development of precast structures for low-rise residential buildings, this study explores a new structure—namely, an integrated precast structure of lightweight recycled-concrete wall with single-row reinforcement—under a lightweight steel frame filled with recycled concrete (integrated precast structure for short). The lightweight steel frame and lightweight wall cooperate to bear the forces. The applied concealed bracing, either a rebar bracing or a steel plate bracing, increases the shear resistance of the wall. The lightweight steel frame is designed to bear the vertical loading, whereas the seismic load in the horizontal direction is jointly borne by the frame and wall. This study presents the results of low reversed cyclic loading tests on nine specimens of integrated precast structures. An analysis is then carried out to investigate the mechanical properties of the specimens; based on these results, a formula for the force-bearing performance of the inclined section is developed. The results show satisfactory performance as an integrated piece; the proposed structure has two seismic lines of defence, with the lightweight wall restraint by the side frame being the first line and the steel frame being the second line. Because the failure of the wall can be categorised as shear failure, the restraint of the lightweight steel frame significantly reduces the potential damage of the wall. As the beams and columns of the steel frame tend to bend against failure, the wall filling helps resist sliding. Therefore, the reinforced joints of the connecting beams and columns show no visible signs of damage, indicating that the connection between the beams and columns is reliable. The narrow spacing of rebars and the setting of concealed bracing contribute to the increase in ductility and energy efficiency and the evident reduction in the failure process. Furthermore, the recycled concrete increases the seismic resistance of the structure.

Ge-Row data of deformation localization of raw coal and briquette coal

To compare and analyze the difference in deformation and damage law of soft and hard porous media materials, the digital image correlation is used to evaluate the heterogeneous development of strain fields of hard and brittle raw coal and soft plastic briquette coal materials under uniaxial compression. Through the defined statistical indexes, the quantitative characterization of deformation localization is realized, and the material damage constitutive model based on the statistical indexes of strain field is established. The results show that the yield stage of raw coal is not obvious, showing the characteristics of strain hardening and X-shaped macroscopic shear failure. The yield stage of briquette coal is more obvious, showing the characteristics of strain softening and a tensile failure mode. The progress of strain localization can well reflect the damage and destruction process of materials. The progress of strain localization of briquette coal can be divided into uniform deformation stage, localization stage and failure stage, while the stage characteristics of localized evolution of raw coal is not obvious. The theoretical results of the damage constitutive model defined by statistical indexes are in good agreement with the experimental data, which well reflect the stress and strain characteristics of the two materials.

Data from: Transitions in the flow patterns and aerodynamic characteristics of the flow around staggered rows of cylinders
A two-dimensional numerical study of flow across rows of identical square cylinders arranged in staggered fashion is carried out. This study will unreveal complex flow physics depending upon the Reynolds number (Re) and gap spacing (g) between the cylinders. The combined effect of Reynolds number and gap spacing on the flow physics around staggered rows of cylinders are numerically studied for 20 ≤ Re ≤ 140 and 1 ≤ g ≤ 6. We use the lattice Boltzmann method for numerical computations. It is found that with increase in gap spacing between the cylinders the critical Reynolds number for the onset of vortex shedding also increases. We observed a strong effect of Reynolds number at g = 2 and 4. Secondary cylinder interaction frequency disappears for large Reynolds number at g = 6 and 5 and the flow around cylinders are fully dominated by the primary vortex shedding frequency. This ensures that at large gap spacing with an increase in the Reynolds number the wakes interaction between and behind the cylinders is weaken. Furthermore, it also ensures that the wake interaction behind the cylinders is strongly influenced by the jets in the gap spacing between the cylinders. We also found that g = 2 is the critical gap spacing for flow across rows of staggered square cylinders for the considered range of Reynolds number. Depending on the Reynolds number we observed; synchronous, quasi-periodic-I, quasi-periodic-II, and chaotic flow patterns. In synchronous flow pattern, an in-phase and anti-phase characteristics of consecutive cylinders has been observed. The important physical parameters are also analyzed and discussed in detail.

Row data of the publication: Can beta-blockers influence regular daily physical activity?

Raw data

BACKGROUND: In hypertension, beta-blockers have a high rate of nonadherence to treatment likely because of fatigue. METHODS: We evaluate daily physical activity and maximal exercise performance in 56 patients with hypertension (grades I-II), with and without beta-blockers (bisoprolol 10 mg or atenolol 100 mg) added to standard treatment; 48 patients completed the study. Study tests were performed after 8 weeks of antihypertensive therapy without beta blockers and after the following 8 weeks with beta-blockers. RESULTS: No significant differences between beta-blockers were observed. At office measurement, beta-blockers decreased heart rate (HR) from 78 +/- 9 to 62 +/- 7 bpm (P < 0.01) and SBP from 133 +/- 13 to 125 +/- 12 mmHg (P < 0.01). No significant changes were observed for DBP. Conversely, at ambulatory pressure monitoring DBP but not SBP decreased with beta-blockers (mean-24-h DBP 77 +/- 8 vs. 74 +/- 7 mmHg, P < 0.01). An overall reduction of daily activities and of estimated kilocalories consumption was observed as measured by a portable armband device. Of note, time with activity more than 3 METS was reduced by beta-blockers from 148.1 (83-201) to 117.9 (82-189) min (P < 0.01). Cardiopulmonary exercise (CPE) showed a preserved exercise performance unaffected by beta-blockers. CONCLUSION: In hypertension, beta-blocker treatment is associated to reduction of daily physical activity but not of maximal exercise performance.
