Marsh plant species shoot height, weight and diameters for Rowley River tidal creeks associated with long term fertilization experiments, Rowley and Ipswich, MA. The TIDE project aims to simulate eutrophication on a large scale by the addition of NO3- aiming to reach 70μM concentrations from May to September every year during the growing season. This fertilization of the marsh has been going on at Sweeney Creek since the 2004 growing season through 2012 and at Clubhead Creek in 2005 and from 2009 till 2019.
PIE LTER salt marsh vegetation cover data from regularly monitored quadrats along transects in Rowley, MA.
Marsh vegetation cover data from quadrats along transects in salt marsh sites in Rowley, MA. The transects are intended to study long term changes in marsh vegetation. Four sites ((12 transects) were originally set up to study the impact of salt marsh haying. Two of these sites (labeled McH and EPH) were regularly hayed until 2002. The other two (PUH and CC) were reference sites. Two additional sites labeled RM and RR (8 transects) were originally set up to track invasion by Phragmites australis.

Plant heights at control and fertilized plots in a Spartina alterniflora-dominated marsh, Law's Point, Rowley River, Plum Island Ecosystem LTER, MA (1999-2025).
Plant heights are measured during the growing season in permanent plots at a Spartina alterniflora-dominated salt marsh on the Rowley River within the Plum Island Ecosystems (PIE) LTER site. Plant heights are converted to plant weight using an algorithm to generate a non-destructive estimate of aboveground plant biomass.

Eddy flux measurements during 2015 from low marsh site (Spartina alterniflora) within Shad Creek catchment, Rowley, Massachusetts.
We deployed an eddy covariance system to measure ecosystem-atmosphere exchange of CO2 above a low marsh system (Spartina alterniflora) located within the Shad creek catchment off Plum Island Sound, Rowley MA. The data represents CO2 exchange for all July to October 2015. This site was established in 2015.

Decomposition and lignin content of wooden dowels deployed in a salt- or brackish marsh for 3, 5, or 7 years at the Plum Island Ecosystem LTER site, Rowley MA, 2017-2024.
Wooden dowels were used to examine organic matter decomposition in salt- and brackish marsh soils. Dowels were inserted to a depth of 45cm in control and fertilized marsh plots. They were harvested after 3, 5 or 7 years and sectioned into 5-cm segments. Weight loss of the dowel segments was used to quantify the fate of labile organic matter while change in lignin content was used to quantify the fate of refractory organic matter.
PIE LTER marsh sediment porewater nutrient concentrations from Spartina sp. and Typha sp. sites along the Parker River and Rowley River, MA.
Marsh sediment porewater nutrient concentrations [NH4+, NO3-, DOC, TDN, H2S] and salinity are reported from Spartina sp. and Typha sp. sites along the Parker and Rowley Rivers, MA. Porewater peeper poles are used for collection and the poles are located in the vicinity of the marsh water table sites for the Railroad, Typha, Shad and Nelson sites.
Abundance of holothurians (Echinodermata: Holothuroidea) in the Rowley Shoals, Australia, in 2018 and 2023
This dataset represents the first island-scale compilation of sea cucumber (Echinodermata: Holothuroidea) abundance data across all three protected atolls of the Rowley Shoals in the northwest coast of Australia. We specifically quantified holothurian abundance by doing standardized benthic surveys (SCUBA visual census along 50-meter transects) across 34 sites in both 2018 and 2023 as follows: Clerke Reef (n=18 sites), Imperieuse Reef (n=10 sites), and Mermaid Reef (n=6 sites). Given that many species here documented are listed as threatened or vulnerable by the IUCN, this dataset will help inform research and management efforts to protect these unique species and reef ecosystems.
PIE LTER surveys of salt marsh breeding birds using point counts in Rowley and Newbury, Massachusetts (Reformatted to a Darwin Core Archive)
This data package is formatted as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A, event core). For more information on Darwin Core see https://www.tdwg.org/standards/dwc/. This Level 2 data package was derived from the Level 1 data package found here: https://pasta.lternet.edu/package/metadata/eml/edi/336/2, which was derived from the Level 0 data package found here: https://pasta.lternet.edu/package/metadata/eml/knb-lter-pie/175/8. The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: This data set contains the results of point count surveys of breeding birds in the salt marshes of the Plum Island Estuary. Surveys have been carried out each year in June beginning in 2004 and are ongoing. Currently six circles of 100 m radius are being surveyed. Three of the circles are in plots that had been regularly hayed and three in unhayed plots. Currently only one of the plots is regularly hayed. 85 species recorded as of 2020. Most frequently encountered are Agelaius phoeniceus, Ammospiza caudacuta, Tringa semipalmata. The Plum Island Ecosystems (PIE) LTER is developing a predictive understanding of the response of a linked watershed-marsh-estuarine system in northeastern Massachusetts to rapid environmental change. Over the last 30 years, surface sea water temperatures in the adjacent Gulf of Maine have risen at 3 times the global average, rates of sea-level rise have accelerated, and precipitation has increased. Coupled with these changes in climate and sea level are substantial changes within the rapidly urbanizing watersheds that influence water, sediment, and nutrient delivery to the marsh and estuary. In PIE IV our focus is on: Dynamics of coastal ecosystems in a region of rapid climate change, sea-level rise, and human impacts. NSF OCE LTER-Plum Island Ecosystems: Dynamics of coastal ecosystems in a region of rapid climate change, sea-level rise, and human impacts.
