Data in Brief: Twig selection on mountain birch Betula pubescens by winter-feeding willow grouse Lagopus lagopus in a subarctic forest

<p class="MsoNormal"></p> <p class="MsoNormal">In a subarctic forest at Kvaløya, northern Norway willow grouse (<em>Lagopus lagopus</em>) fed at snow level by clipping bits of twigs from mountain birch (<em>Betula pubescens</em>) during winter. Birch has two types of twigs ending in a terminal bud: long twigs with a smooth bark, and short twigs with rings of thicker bark. The grouse selected ringed twigs above smooth twigs despite a surplus of smooth twigs in the forest. Ringed twigs had more bark cm<sup>-1</sup> of twig length and a higher relative bark/wood ratio than smooth twigs. Smooth twigs had growth nodes that increased in diameter inwards from the tip. Because of the non-linear relation between the area and the circumference of a circle, the bark/wood ratio decreased for each node. Although being able to clip much thicker twigs, 90 % of smooth twigs clipped by grouse were <span>≤</span> 2 mm in diameter. It is concluded that willow grouse fed optimally on birch in winter by selecting twigs to minimize fibrous wood intake.</p>

Spotted hyaena (Crocuta crocuta) feeding ecology and selectivity of large herbivorous prey in the Namib Desert

<p>We have investigated the relationship between spotted hyaenas in the south Namib Desert and large herbivorous prey, and have summarized an updated overview of predator-prey relationships in this resource-limited arid environment. Over the 52-month study, we recorded the densities (#/km<sup>-2</sup>, <u>+</u> SE) of the four local large herbivorous prey species: gemsbok (1.229, <u>+</u> 0.50), springbok (1.352, <u>+</u> 0.48), ostrich (0.648, <u>+</u> 0.23), and greater kudu (0.343, <u>+</u> 0.00). A faecal analysis was performed on 146 collected spotted hyaena scats, and prey items were identified and hairs cross-follicle analysed to the species level. Spotted hyaena diet at the study area remained opportunistic with 240 identified prey items representing eight differing prey species being recorded, ranging from ostrich eggs to large ungulates. The Ivlev's Electivity Index was used to determine which large herbivorous prey was most selected for. Although gemsbok had a higher representation of prey items in the sampled scats, all sampled large herbivorous prey species scored below 0, and are thus generally avoided in relation to their availability in the environment. If any prey preferences are expressed by spotted hyaena in the Namib, it can be presumed to be a non-sampled prey species. We therefore promote further detailed investigations into all other prey species present, and seasonal variations of prey densities and scat sampling, within the study environment.</p>

Breeding and feeding habitat selection by an island endemic bird may increase its vulnerability to climate change

<p>Characterising patterns of habitat use is an important first step for effective conservation planning.  Species restricted to low-lying islands are at greatest risk from climate change-related sea level rise, and requirements for breeding and foraging habitat may determine their risk from tidal inundation.  The endangered Micronesian Scrubfowl (<i>Megapodius laperouse senex</i>) is a model species for understanding these impacts.  This species faces the cumulative challenges of tourist visitation, invasive species, and rising sea levels, yet little is understood about its habitat use in the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon Conservation Area (RISL) of Palau.  We studied the habitat requirements of this mound-nesting scrubfowl as a representative of a group of birds considered highly vulnerable to climate change.  Analysis of 15 habitat variables at 24 incubation mounds and 26 randomly chosen sites indicated that scrubfowl selected incubation sites that were close to shore, contained large trees, and exhibited greater canopy heights than the surrounding forest.  Birds preferentially built mounds at the base of large ironwood trees (<i>Casuarina</i> <i>equisetifolia</i>) but selected sites with significantly more breadfruit trees (<i>Artocarpus mariannensis</i>) than random.  Scrubfowl foraged in a non-preferential manner, making use of all littoral strand forest habitat.  Direct anthropogenic habitat loss is not a major threat to scrubfowl in the RISL but their breeding habitat is highly vulnerable to climate change-driven sea level rise.</p>

Movement behaviour and selection for protected areas by the African white-backed vulture, Gyps africanus, in relation to supplementary feeding

<p>This folder contains data that has previously been collected by&nbsp;supervisor, Dr. Adam Kane for the use of this research project which has been presented to the School of Biology and Environmental Science, University College Dublin. The vultures, ID1 and ID2, were tagged and their whereabouts (latitude and longitude)&nbsp;were tracked every four hours over a year and a half long period (May 2015-December 2016). The time and date were recorded for every point and this data was then recorded in a CSV file.</p>

Data from: The intake pattern and feed preference of layer hens selected for high or low feed conversion ratio

Feed accounts for the greatest proportion of laying hen egg production costs and there is substantial variation in feed to egg conversion (FCR) efficiency between individual hens. Despite this understanding, there is a paucity of information regarding layer hen feeding behaviour, diet selection and its impact on feed efficiency. It was hypothesised that variation in feed to egg conversion efficiency between hens may be influenced by feeding behaviour. For this experiment, two 35- bird groups of ISA Brown layers were selected from 450 individually caged hens at 25-30 weeks of age for either low feed conversion ratio FCR &lt; 1.8 ± 0.02 (high feed efficiency (HFE))) or high FCR &gt;2.1 ± 0.02 (low feed efficiency (LFE)). For each of these 70 hens, intake of an ad-libitum mash diet at 2-minute time intervals, 24 h a day, for 7 days was determined alongside behavioural assessment and estimation of the selection of components of thethis mash. The group selected for HFE had a lower feed intake, similar egg mass and associated lower FCR when compared with the LFE group. Whilst feed intake patterns were similar between HFE and LFE hens, there was a distinct intake pattern for all layer hens with intake rate increasing from 0300 to 1700 h with a sharp decline to 22002100 h. High feed efficiencyFE hens selected a diet with 25% more ash and 4% less gross energy than LFE hens. The LFE hens also spent more time eating with more walking events, but less time spent resting, drinking, preening and cage pecking events as compared with HFE hens. In summary, there was no contrasting diurnal pattern of feed consumption behaviour between the groups ranked on feed efficiency, howeverIn summary, high feed efficiency hens consumed less feed and selected a diet with greater ash content and lower gross energy as compared with LFE hens. Our work is now focused on individual hen diet selection from mash diets with an aim of formulating precision, targeted diets for greater feed efficiency.
