Combining seascape connectivity with cumulative impact assessment in support of ecosystem-based marine spatial planning
<p>1. Cumulative impact assessment (CIA) is a promising approach to guide marine spatial planning (MSP) and management. One limitation of CIA is the neglect of seascape connectivity, which may spread the impact of localised pressures to ambient areas, e.g. through lost dispersal and recruitment of organisms.</p> <p>2. We here, for the first time, incorporate seascape connectivity into a traditional CIA model using a connectivity matrix, exemplified by dispersal of propagules estimated through biophysical modelling. Two <i>connectivity impacts</i>are identified: the <i>source impact</i> represents downstream areas losing recruits because of reduced larval dispersal from sites affected by the pressure, and the <i>sink impact</i> represents loss of recruits originating from upstream areas prevented from settlement in the site affected by the local pressure.</p> <p>3. By including seascape connectivity into the Swedish MSP-guiding CIA tool Symphony we demonstrate how to practically account for remote effects of local environmental impact. Our example on blue mussel shows how reducing mussel fitness in a given area may have impacts on mussels far from the acting pressures. Overall, results indicate that connectivity impact for blue mussels plays a minor role in most areas, less than 10% of the ordinary cumulative impact. However, in some smaller areas, e.g. on offshore banks and the Danish Straits, seascape connectivity may increase ordinary cumulative impact with 20-30%. In an example of scenario-based CIA analyses of MSP projections, we demonstrate how impacts of particular management actions, e.g. shipping rerouting and wind power developments, can be tracked far from the original area of influence.</p> <p>4. Depending on the dispersal ability of ecosystem components, a local pressure may impact a considerable area through seascape connectivity, transgressing management units and national borders. Although the mean connectivity impact may be modest for a single ecosystem component, the consideration of seascape connectivity across multiple ecosystem components may significantly alter the mapping of cumulative impact and the assessment of different MSP scenarios.</p> <p>5. Synthesis and applications.<span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span> Our extension of Cumulative Impact Assessment offers a new method for mapping and practically integrating seascape connectivity with ecosystem-based MSP and other spatial instruments for policy making, such as marine protected areas.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

Data from: Postglacial range expansion shaped the spatial genetic structure in a marine habitat-forming species: implications for conservation plans in the Eastern Adriatic Sea
Aim: Understanding how historical and contemporary processes shaped and maintain spatial patterns of genetic diversity is a major goal for conservation biologists. Here, we characterized the pattern of neutral genetic diversity and we inferred underlying processes in the habitat-forming octocoral Paramuricea clavata in the Adriatic Sea, a peculiar phylogeographic region of the Mediterranean Sea. Location: Eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. Methods: We genotyped seven microsatellites in 454 individuals of P. clavata from 13 populations recolonized after the last glacial maximum (LGM). We estimated the levels of contemporary connectivity and genetic drift and we reconstructed the demographic history of these populations. Results: The pattern of spatial genetic structure resulted from the combination of hierarchical genetic clusters and isolation by distance (IBD). A significant decrease in genetic diversity and an increase of the frequencies of individual alleles likely due to allele surfing from the south to the north of the area were observed as expected after a postglacial sequential recolonization. Based on maximum likelihood analyses, the foundation of these populations was not linked to dramatic change in population size. Main conclusion: Oceanographic barriers to gene flow combined to the restricted dispersal of P. clavata likely maintain the hierarchical structure and the IBD pattern. We suggest that the latitudinal genetic gradient results from a northward 'serial founder events' recolonization. By integrating patterns and processes, we bridge the gap between the evolutionary and the conservation biology of P. clavata, providing management guidelines, which will benefit the associated coralligenous biodiversity.
Data from: Using satellite AIS to improve our understanding of shipping and fill gaps in ocean observation data to support marine spatial planning
1. A key stage underpinning marine spatial planning (MSP) involves mapping the spatial distribution of ecological processes and biological features, as well the social and economic interests of different user groups. One sector, merchant shipping (vessels that transport cargo or passengers), however, is often poorly represented in MSP due to a perceived lack of fine-scale spatially explicit data to support decision making processes. 2. Here, using the Republic of Congo as an example, we show how publicly accessible satellite derived Automatic Identification System (S-AIS) data can address gaps in ocean observation data for shipping at a national scale. We also demonstrate how fine-scale (0.05 km2 resolution) spatial data layers derived from S-AIS (intensity, occupancy) can be used to generate maps of vessel pressure to provide an indication of patterns of impact on the marine environment and potential for conflict with other ocean-user groups. 3. We reveal that passenger vessels, offshore service vessels, bulk carrier and cargo vessels and tankers account for 93.7% of all vessels and vessel traffic annually, and that these sectors operate in a combined area equivalent to 92% of Congo's exclusive economic zone(EEZ) – far exceeding the areas allocated for other user-groups (conservation, fisheries and petrochemicals). We also show that the shallow coastal waters and habitats of the continental shelf are subject to more persistent pressure associated with shipping; and that the potential for conflict among user groups is likely to be greater with fisheries, whose zones are subject to the highest vessel pressure scores than with conservation or petrochemical sectors. 4. Synthesis and applications. Shipping dominates ocean use, and so excluding this sector from decision making could lead to increased conflict among user groups, poor compliance and negative environmental impacts. This study demonstrates how Satellite derived Automatic Identification System data can provide a comprehensive mechanism to fill gaps in ocean observation data and visualise patterns of vessel behaviour and potential threats to better support marine spatial planning at national scales.13-Feb-2018
Data from: Phylogenetically informed spatial planning is required to conserve the mammalian tree of life
In the face of the current extinction crisis and severely limited conservation resources, safeguarding the tree of life is increasingly recognized as a high priority. We conducted a first systematic global assessment of the conservation of phylogenetic diversity (PD) that uses realistic area targets and highlights the key areas for conservation of the mammalian tree of life. Our approach offers a substantially more effective conservation solution than one focused on species. In many locations, priorities for PD differ substantially from those of a species-based approach that ignores evolutionary relationships. This discrepancy increases rapidly as the amount of land available for conservation declines, as does the relative benefit for mammal conservation (for the same area protected). This benefit is equivalent to an additional 5900 Myr of distinct mammalian evolution captured simply through a better informed choice of priority areas. Our study uses area targets for PD to generate more realistic conservation scenarios, and tests the impact of phylogenetic uncertainty when selecting areas to represent diversity across a phylogeny. It demonstrates the opportunity of using rapidly growing phylogenetic information in conservation planning and the readiness for a new generation of conservation planning applications that explicitly consider the heritage of the tree of life's biodiversity.
Pre-Processed Data Sets for Marine Spatial Planning of a Wave-Powered Aquaculture Farm in the Northeast U.S.
<p>These data sets are intended for marine spatial planning applications including the modeling of wave-powered aquaculture farms. They work in tandem with the Python model developed by the SEA Lab to evaluate potential sites for this development in the Northeastern U.S. The code for this model is available on GitHub at <a href=" https://github.com/symbiotic-engineering/aquaculture">https://github.com/symbiotic-engineering/aquaculture</a>, and details about the data and model are discussed in several related publications.</p>

A consistency evaluation of marine aquaculture with marine spatial planning by remote sensing and GIS
<p>This study used multi-phase satellite remote sensing images of Shandong Province and an automatic extraction algorithm for aquaculture to obtain aquaculture spatial distribution data. GIS spatial overlay analysis technology was used to superimpose marine functional zoning (2010–2020) data for comparative analysis to evaluate implementation effectiveness and existing problems in marine functional zoning. </p>
Redesigning Modern Portfolio Theory to Improve Spatial Recovery Planning for Oregon Coast (OC) Coho Salmon
<p>Oregon Coast (OC) coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) are a federally listed threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. It is integral to conserve this species due to their ecological importance in nutrient cycling and cultural significance to Indigenous peoples. The combination of their threatened status and significance creates a sense of urgency for conservation organizations, like the Wild Salmon Center, to efficiently allocate their budgets. In this project we redesigned Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT) to optimize habitat restoration spending. MPT is traditionally used in finance to inform portfolio managers what the risks and returns are of investing in different portfolios of assets. In our redesigned application, the 21 populations of OC coho salmon are treated as assets, with the increase of salmon abundance and variance directly relating to the amount of money allocated to conserve each population. More specifically, we applied our new approach to mitigating barriers that inhibit salmon from traveling back to their natal streams. To do this, we gathered and collected data on fish passage barriers, average project costs to remove barriers, and estimated how removing barriers would affect the abundance of coho salmon. We analyzed portfolios under multiple budgets and scenarios that prioritize conservation spending in watersheds important to Indigenous peoples. This endogenous application is the first of its kind in the conservation field and can be applied to a multitude of species or restoration actions beyond OC coho salmon and barrier mitigation. </p>
Areas of interest for spatial planning in the northern Gulf of Mexico
<p><span>Twelve areas of interest greater than 100 km<sup>2</sup>, presenting relatively high modeled cold-water coral diversity, and located outside a four-kilometer zone of potential influence from oil and gas infrastructure were delineated and deemed of interest for further exploration and spatial planning.</span></p>
