Invasive buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris) increases water stress and reduces growth of native foothills palo verde (Parkinsonia microphylla) seedlings in pot experiments
Although buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris) invasions on several continents have significant ecological impacts, little information is available on its effect on seedling emergence and establishment of native vegetation. In highly impacted areas of the Sonoran Desert of North America, perennial plants are particularly vulnerable during their seedling stage. We studied the impact of buffel grass on the emergence, survival, and water stress in the seedlings of a locally dominant native tree, the foothills palo verde (Parkinsonia microphylla), using two pot experiments. In the first experiment, we compared the germination, growth, and survival of concentric rings of palo verde seedlings around mature individuals of buffel grass, a native shrub of a similar diameter and height to buffel grass, or in a pot with bare soil. In the second experiment, we compared the competitive effects of buffel grass seedlings on palo verde seedlings with the effects of conspecific seedlings, again using germination, growth, and survival as metrics. We followed up both experiments by quantifying the ratio of stable carbon isotopes in the tissues of the palo verde seedlings, which can be an indicator of water stress. We found evidence of relatively greater water stress in palo verde seedlings grown with buffel grass seedlings in pots than those grown with no competitor, and reduced survival of palo verde seedlings when grown with mature buffel grass. Our results highlight the need for more manipulative studies of density to improve mechanistic understanding of population dynamics, and to forecast how populations and communities will respond in the long term to perturbations such as invasion.
WER01 Elevated CO2 counteracts effects of water stress on woody rangeland-encroaching species at Konza Prairie
Woody plants are increasing prevalence and dominance in many rangelands around the world. The reason for their increase is various but two common drivers that have changed are an increase in CO2 concentrations and alteration to precipitation dynamics. We asked what the physiological growth dynamics of four juvenile woody plant species (Cornus drummondii, Rhus glabra, Gleditsia triacanthos and Juniperus osteosperma) when grown in elevated CO2 and chronically water stressed. We found that elevated CO2 counteracts much of the physiological effects of chronic water stress in the four different woody plant species measured. The alleviation of water stress from increased CO2 concentrations will result in juvenile woody plants continuing to expand and establish in North American rangelands. This information will aid land managers in making long-term management objectives for reducing woody plants in rangelands.
Soil bacterial diversity inventories along small-scale stress gradients in the Arctic, Antarctic, and Chihuahuan Deserts (2022-2023)
Bacteria form the foundation of soil ecosystems in desert ecosystems, driving soil function, diversity, and ecology. Soil physicochemistry is largely dictated by larger topographical variations and can directly drive bacterial community composition and the relationships within. Bacteria may form complex networks of interactions with other bacteria and other soil taxa that have implications for emergent properties such as diversity and stability, but the way these interactions are impacted by environmental stressors remains poorly understood. Here, we sampled soil bacterial communities of three desert ecosystems at different latitudes: the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica; the northern Chihuahuan Desert, Jornada Experimental Range (JER), New Mexico, USA; and the Arctic tundra at the Canadian High Arctic Research Research Station (CHARS), Victoria Island, Nunavut, Canada. In each system, a holistic stress-gradient was sampled based on local topographical variation, vegetation cover, and water availability. Sampling along the stress-gradient was conducted at four distinct stress levels, namely lower elevation with vegetation cover, lower elevation without vegetation cover, higher elevation with vegetation cover, and higher elevation without vegetation cover. To allow robust biodiversity inference and co-occurrence network construction, 30 replicates were collected at each stress level, and this was done at two independent stress gradients for the Chihuahuan Desert and Arctic sites. The Antarctic samples consisted of two independent stress gradients, one ranging from low, middle to high elevation without vegetation cover, and one consisting of two levels with and without vegetation cover. For each site, soil pH and gravimetric water content was also measured. Each replicate was then sequenced on an Illumina MiSeq for 2x250 paired-end sequencing of the 16S rRNA marker. MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Coral bleaching with nitrogen and heat stress: 2016 data in support of Donovan et al. submitted to PNAS
During 2016, maximum water temperature in the lagoons of Moorea exceeded a threshold for heat stress for 70 straight days from early February through mid-April. In early May 2016, at the peak of accumulated heat stress, coral bleaching surveys were conducted to test the hypothesis that bleaching prevalence and severity were correlated with differences in heat stress and nutrient availability. This material is based upon work supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation under Grant No. OCE 16-37396 (and earlier awards) as well as a generous gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Research was completed under permits issued by the French Polynesian Government (Délégation à la Recherche) and the Haut-commissariat de la République en Polynésie Francaise (DTRT) (Protocole d'Accueil 2005-2019). The sample was then reloaded elastically and a further period of stress relaxation at fixed total strain undertaken. in total five periods of stress relaxation were imposed.</p> <p>Throughout the mechanical testing cycle powder diffraction patterns were recorded in the transmission geometry, at 1 second intervals using a 2d Pixium detector held 1097 mm from the sample. Contour method and neutron diffraction dataset to determine the weld fusion zone shape on residual stress in submerged arc welding
<p>This is a dataset which formed the basis for "The effect of the weld fusion zone shape on residual stress in submerged arc welding" by A. Ishigami, M. J. Roy, J. N. Walsh and P. J. Withers appearing in the Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology.</p> <p>Two X-grade steel specimens with different high speed, submerged arc welds with very slight differences in fusion zone shape were compared with a novel contour method application as well as with neutron diffraction. Neutron diffraction was carried out with the SALSA instrument at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France with the assistance of T. Pirling. Data files with 441 in the descriptor refer to 'conventional' parameters (see publication), while 241 refers to 'new'.</p> <p>Provided in this dataset are four *.dat files, which contains data is in the form of a point cloud with one point per line, whitespace delimited in microns. Data was captured with a Nanofocus CF-4 laser profilometer sensor with point spacing 30 µm apart. Ground truth and raw hyperspectral files of olive trees for plant stress detection
<p>This dataset contains raw hyperspectral images from Cubert S-185 collected on 13 May 2021 from an olive field in Halkidiki, Northern Greece. Included is also a matrix containing the id of each recorded olive tree (the samples) that also appears in the hyperspectral images. QGIS (ver.3.28.0) software plugin 'zonal statistics multiband' was used to compute zonal statistics for each of the 138 spectral bands available for each sample. Accompanying each sample is also the ground truthing data recorded, which addresses the present stress of 3 stressors (<i>Verticillium dahliae, Pleospora herbarum </i>and 'other stressors').</p>
