Allele surfing causes maladaptation in a Pacific salmon of conservation concern
<p>How different factors including demography, recombination or genome duplication may impact selection efficacy and the burden of deleterious mutations in different populations is a central question of evolutionary biology and genetics. Here we show that key evolutionary processes, including variation in effective population size through postglacial change in demography and recombination rates have affected the efficacy of selection and impacted the genetic load in Coho salmon (<em>Oncorhynchus kisutch</em>), a widely distributed salmonid species on the west coast of North America. Using whole genome resequencing data from 14 populations at different travelled migratory distances from their southern glacial refugium, we found support for postglacial gene surfing, with reduced <em>N</em><sub><em>e</em></sub> at the range recolonization front, thus inducing both a reduction in the efficacy of selection and a surf of deleterious alleles in populations evolving at low <em>N</em><sub><em>e</em></sub>. This inference was robust to various proxies of the load. In addition, comparing residual tetrasomic and re-diploidizing regions of the salmon genome, we found support for a prime role of recombination rates in shaping the within-genome variation of the load. Overall, our empirical results are remarkably consistent with expectations under the nearly neutral theory of molecular evolution. We discuss the fundamental and applied implications of these findings for evolutionary and conservation genomics.</p> <p> </p>

<p><span><span>Eyes have the flexibility to evolve to meet the ecological demands of their users.</span><b><span> </span></b><span>Relative to camera-type eyes, the fundamental limits of optical diffraction in arthropod compound eyes restricts the ability to resolve fine detail (visual acuity) to much lower degrees. We tested the capacity of several ecological factors to predict arthropod visual acuity, while simultaneously controlling for shared phylogenetic history. In this study, we have generated the most comprehensive review of compound eye visual acuity measurements to date, containing </span></span><span><span>375 </span></span><span><span>species that span six of the major arthropod classes. An arthropod phylogeny, made custom to this database, was used to develop a phylogenetically-corrected generalized least squares (PGLS) linear model to evaluate four ecological factors predicted to underlie compound eye visual acuity: environmental light intensity, foraging strategy (predator vs. non-predator), horizontal structure of the visual scene, and environmental medium (air vs. water). To account for optical constraints on acuity related to animal size, body length was also included, though this did not show a significant effect in any of our models. Rather, the PGLS revealed that the strongest predictors of compound eye acuity are described by a combination of environmental medium, foraging strategy, and environmental light intensity.</span></span></p>
Data from: Genetic surfing, not allopatric divergence, explains spatial sorting of mitochondrial haplotypes in venomous coralsnakes
Strong spatial sorting of genetic variation in contiguous populations is often explained by local adaptation or secondary contact following allopatric divergence. A third explanation, spatial sorting by stochastic effects of range expansion, has been considered less often though theoretical models suggest it should be widespread, if ephemeral. In a study designed to delimit species within a clade of venomous coralsnakes, we identified an unusual pattern within the Texas coral snake (Micrurus tener): strong spatial sorting of divergent mitochondrial (mtDNA) lineages over a portion of its range, but weak sorting of these lineages elsewhere. We tested three alternative hypotheses to explain this pattern—local adaptation, secondary contact following allopatric divergence, and range expansion. Collectively, near panmixia of nuclear DNA, the signal of range expansion associated sampling drift, expansion origins in the Gulf Coast of Mexico, and species distribution modeling suggest that the spatial sorting of divergent mtDNA lineages within M. tener has resulted from genetic surfing of standing mtDNA variation—not local adaptation or allopatric divergence. Our findings highlight the potential for the stochastic effects of recent range expansion to mislead estimations of population divergence made from mtDNA, which may be exacerbated in systems with low vagility, ancestral mtDNA polymorphism, and male-biased dispersal.
Data from: A migratory northern ungulate in the pursuit of spring: jumping or surfing the green wave?
The Forage Maturation Hypothesis (FMH) states that herbivores migrate along a phenological gradient of plant development in order to maximize energy intake. Despite strong support for the FMH, the actual relationship between plant phenology and ungulate movement has remained enigmatic. We linked plant phenology (MODIS-NDVI) and space use of 167 migratory and 78 resident red deer (Cervus elaphus) using a space-time-time matrix of "springness", defined as the instantaneous rate of green-up (IRG). Consistent with the FMH, migrants experienced substantially greater access to early plant phenology than residents. Deer were also more likely to migrate in areas where migration led to greater gains in springness. Rather than "surfing the green wave" during migration, migratory red deer moved rapidly from the winter to the summer range, thereby "jumping the green wave". However, migrants, and to a lesser degree residents, did track phenological green-up through parts of the growing season by making smaller-scale adjustments in habitat use. We conclude that, whereas in some systems migration itself is a way to surf the green wave, in others it may simply be a means to re-connect with phenological spring at the summer range.
Data from: Home loving boreal hare mitochondria survived several invasions in Iberia: the relative roles of recurrent hybridisation and allele surfing
Genetic introgression from a resident species into an invading close relative can result from repeated hybridisation along the invasion front and/or allele surfing on the expansion wave. Cases where the phenomenon is massive and systematic, such as for hares (genus Lepus) in Iberia, would be best explained by recurrent hybridisation but this is difficult to prove since the donor populations are generally extinct. In the Pyrenean foothills, Lepus europaeus presumably replaced Lepus granatensis recently and the present species border is parallel to the direction of invasion, so that populations of L. granatensis in the contact zone represent proxies of existing variation before the invasion. Among three pairs of populations sampled across this border, we find less differentiation of mtDNA across than along it, as predicted under recurrent hybridisation at the invasion front. Using autosomal microsatellite loci and X and Y-linked diagnostic loci, we show that admixture across the border is quasi-absent, making it unlikely that lack of interspecific mtDNA differentiation result from ongoing gene flow. Furthermore, we find that the local species ranges are climatically contrasted, making it also unlikely that ongoing ecology-driven movement of the contact account for mtDNA introgression. The lack of mtDNA differentiation across the boundary is mostly due to sharing of mtDNA from a boreal species currently extinct in Iberia (Lepus timidus) whose mitochondria have thus remained in place since the last deglaciation despite successive invasions by two other species. Home loving mitochondria thus witness past species distribution rather than ongoing exchanges across stabilised contact zones.

Experimentally broadcast ocean surf and river noise alters birdsong structure
<p>Anthropogenic noise and its effects on acoustic communication have received considerable attention in recent decades. Yet, the natural acoustic environment's influence on communication and its role in shaping acoustic signals remains unclear. Using landscape-level playbacks of ocean surf and river noise in coastal and riparian habitat, respectively, we investigated how water-generated noise influences spectral and temporal song characteristics in six songbird species. We recorded individuals defending territories across 37 sites, with each site representing one of four acoustic environments: naturally quiet 'controls', naturally noisy 'positive controls' adjacent to the ocean or a whitewater river, 'phantom' playback sites with continuous broadcast of low-frequency water noise, and 'shifted' playback sites with continuous broadcast of high-frequency water noise. We predicted that song structure would generally correlate with background sound amplitude and that signal features would differ across site types based on the spectral profile of the acoustic environment. No two species altered songs in precisely the same way. However, song structure of all six species varied with amplitude and/or frequency of background noise, providing strong evidence that natural soundscapes influence vocal behavior.</p>
