Surface texture analysis in Toothfrax and MountainsMap® SSFA module: Different software packages, different results? [ConfoMap analysis]
<p>This record is a supplementary material to the pre-print with the DOI <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7219877">10.5281/zenodo.7219877</a>.</p> <p>It contains the results of the 3D surface texture analysis on surfaces from three datasets: </p> <ul> <li>Sheep's teeth</li> <li>Guinea pig's teeth</li> <li>Lithic flakes</li> </ul> <p>Each surface has been processed in batch with a template. The result of the analysis on each surface is saved in MNT format (including all original and processed surfaces, as well as results) and exported to a PDF file.</p> <p>Ultimately, the results are collated into CSV files (see <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7219855">10.5281/zenodo.7219855</a>).</p> <p>The analysis has been performed with ConfoMap (a derivative of MountainsMap) v. 8.2.9767.</p> <p> </p>
Lesingey Round: textured digital surface model
Lesingey Round is a hillfort near Penzance in Cornwall, and likely dates to the Iron Age. The monument consists of a roughly circular enclosure surrounded by ramparts with a ditch on the outside. From the partially buried ditch, the ramparts stand over 4.5m high in places. In other areas the ramparts have been damaged. The site sits atop a prominent hill with panoramic views, and is covered by a 'crown' of trees that cover the site. In this model the trees have been digitally removed to allow for a different understanding of the site. This 3D survey was undertaken by the [Curatorial Research Centre](https://curatorialresearch.com) on behalf of Penwith Landscape Partnership (PLP). <p>The texture of contacted surfaces influences our perception of the physical environment and modulates behavior. Texture perception and its neural encoding mechanisms have traditionally been studied in the primate hand, yet animals of all types live in richly textured environments and regularly interact with textured surfaces. Here we explore texture sensation in a different type of vertebrate limb by investigating touch and potential texture encoding mechanisms in the pectoral fins of fishes, the forelimb homologs. We investigated the pectoral fins of the round goby (<em>Neogobius melanostomus</em>), a bottom-dwelling species that lives on substrate types of varying roughness and whose fins frequently contact the bottom. Analysis shows that the receptive field sizes of fin ray afferents are small and afferents exhibit response properties to tactile motion that are consistent with those of primates and other animals studied previously. In response to a periodic stimulus (coarse gratings), afferents phase lock to the stimulus temporal frequency and thus can provide information about surface texture. These data demonstrate that fish can have the capability to sense the tactile features of their near range physical environment with fins.</p>

<p>This repository contains the Matlab codes developed for the image processing illustrated in the paper "A simple image analysis technique for measuring bed surface texture in flume experiments" submitted to the Journal of Hydrology. Results of the image processing are reported in some excel spreadsheets. We also provide the pdf file of the paper "Morphology, bedload and sorting process variability in response to lateral confinement: results from physical models of gravel-bed rivers" illustrating the laboratory experiments for which we developed the image analysis technique presented in "A simple image analysis technique for measuring bed surface texture in flume experiments". The paper titled "Morphology, bedload and sorting process variability in response to lateral confinement: results from physical models of gravel-bed rivers" has not been published yet, but it has been accepted by the Journal of Geophysical Research - Earth Surface. Thus, we provide the editor acceptance letter as well.</p>

Mathematical approach to the validation of surface texture filtration software
<pre>A novel method for the validation of surface texture filtration software is introduced. Mathematically traceable reference pairs for linear Gaussian filtration are developed, utilising Fourier series surface definitions in conjunction with the frequency dependent transmission characteristic of the linear Gaussian filter. The novel method is demonstrated using a library of reference pairs to validate the performance of five surface texture analysis software packages. Investigations into the effects of different surface properties are made in relation to the deviation of the software-obtained results from the traceable reference values. Analysis of variance tests are used to verify the statistical significance of the results.</pre>
Mathematical approach to the validation of surface texture form removal software
<pre>A new approach to the validation of surface texture form removal methods is introduced. A linear algebra technique is presented that obtains total least squares (TLS) model fits for a continuous mathematical surface definition. This model is applicable to both profile and areal form removal, and can be used for a range of form removal models including polynomial and spherical fits. The continuous TLS method enables the creation of mathematically traceable reference pairs suitable for the assessment of form removal algorithms in surface texture analysis software. Multiple example reference pairs are presented and used to assess the performance of four tested surface texture analysis software packages. The results of each software are compared against the mathematical reference, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses.</pre>
