Tape lures swell bycatch on a Mediterranean island harbouring illegal bird trapping
<p>Mediterranean islands provide shelter and sustenance for millions of migrating birds each year. Humans have historically exploited bird migration through hunting. In Cyprus, trapping birds during their migratory peak is considered a tradition, but has long been against the law. Illegal bird trapping is lucrative, however, with trappers using tape lures that broadcast birdsong to increase capture rates. It results in the slaughter of millions of birds each year. Yet, scientific studies quantifying capture rates of target and nontarget species using methods employed by trappers are lacking. Here, we show using playback experiments that tape lures lead to an order of magnitude greater capture rates of target species, but also significantly increase bycatch, which may include species of conservation concern. Conservation efforts focusing on minimizing illegal bird killing should also consider tape lures and their contribution to the overall impact of trapping on avian populations.</p>
Data from: Exaggerated sexual swellings and male mate choice in primates: testing the reliable indicator hypothesis in the Amboseli baboons
The paradigm of competitive males vying to influence female mate choice has been repeatedly upheld, but, increasingly, studies also report competitive females and choosy males. One female trait that is commonly proposed to influence male mate choice is the exaggerated sexual swelling displayed by females of many Old World primate species. The reliable indicator hypothesis posits that females use the exaggerated swellings to compete for access to mates, and that the swellings advertise variation in female fitness. We tested the two main predictions of this hypothesis in a wild population of baboons (Papio cynocephalus). First, we examined the effect of swelling size on the probability of mate guarding ('consortship') by the highest-ranking male and the behaviour of those males that trailed consortships ('follower males'). Second, we asked whether a female's swelling size predicted several fitness measures. We found that high-ranking males did not prefer females with larger swellings (when controlling for cycle number and conception) and that females with larger swellings did not have higher reproductive success. Our study, the only complete test of the reliable indicator hypothesis in a primate population, rejects the idea that female baboons compete for mates by advertising heritable fitness differences. Furthermore, we found unambiguous evidence that males biased their mating decisions in favour of females who had experienced more sexual cycles since their most recent pregnancy. Thus, rather than tracking the potential differences in fitness between females, male baboons appear to track and target the potential for a given reproductive opportunity to result in fertilization.

Swelling and Degrafting of Poly(3-sulfopropyl methacrylate) Brushes
<p><span>Upon exp</span><span>osure to a good solvent, polymer brushes prepared via surface-</span><span>initiated</span><span> polyme</span><span>rization </span><span>can undergo degrafting via cleavage of bonds that anchor the polymer tethers to the under</span><span>lying substrate</span><span>. As polymer brushes are often used in a solvent swollen state this has implications for the longevity of these </span><span>polymer </span><span>coatings</span><span>. F</span><span>urthering the </span><span>fundamental</span> <span>understanding</span><span> of this </span><span>process</span><span>, thus is also of </span><span>practical</span><span> importance. </span><span>It is believed that </span><span>degrafting is the consequence </span><span>of </span><span>tension amplification at the bonds that anchor the polymer grafts, which is driven by swelling of the polymer brush film</span><span>. </span><span>Taking advantage of the sensitiv</span><span>ity </span><span>of the swelling behavior </span><span>of </span><span>poly(</span><span>3-sulfopropyl methacrylate) (PSPMA) brushes towards changes in ionic strength, this study has investigated the </span><span>degrafting behavior </span><span>of these brushes in aqueous media at different LiCl and NaCl </span><span>concentrations</span><span>. </span><span>The aim of these </span><span>experiments</span><span>was to investigate </span><span>whether </span><span>the rate consta</span><span>n</span><span>t of the </span><span>d</span><span>egrafting process was correlated with the </span><span>swelling</span><span>ratio of the PSPMA brushes. </span><span>The experiments </span><span>show</span><span> that in aqueous LiCl solutions, the initial rate constant </span><span>of the</span><span> degrafting process is correlated with the swelling ratio of the PSPMA brush. This observation represents a first example of the correlation between these two parameters for hydrophilic polymer brushes in aqueous media, and supports the idea that degrafting is a mechanochemical process driven by a swelling-induced tension at the polymer–substrate interface.</span></p>
