Model output for: Attributing causes of future climate change in the California Current System with multi-model downscaling
<p>Regional Ocean Modeling System outputs from dynamic downscaling of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project climate forcings in the California Current system, including projections with full climate forcings, as well as attribution experiments with only changes in wind, heat fluxes and other properties changing stratification, and boundary biogeochemical forcings. Output variables include euphotic zone integrated net primary productivity, and incident photosytnehtically available radiation, and ocean temperature, salinity, vertical velocity, and dissolved oxygen and nitrate concentrations at select depths.</p>
Density-dependent changes of mating system and family structure in Brandt's voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii)
<p>A mating system is an important life history for animals dealing with changing environments. Population density affects the plasticity of a mating system and subsequently the family structure of animals, but its impacts on mating systems and social structures are rarely investigated by using molecular markers in field conditions. In this study, using microsatellite genetic markers, we examined the changes in the social and genetic mating system and family structure of Brandt's voles in the grassland of Inner Mongolia, China, under low-, medium-, and high-density enclosures (each enclosure 0.48-ha with 4 replicates.) We found, that with the increase in population density of the founder voles introduced into the enclosure in early spring, both sexes increased their number of genetic mating partners, while males increased their social partners, resulting in a more promiscuous mating system. The number of genetic fathers and mothers per family, the number of social offspring per founder male or female, and the proportion of extra-group offspring increased with increased density, indicating that the response of the family structure to density change which is consistent with the change in mating system observed in our study. Both male and female voles had multiple mates, but males had a larger number of social and genetic mates, the number of social and genetic offspring, and the number of social and genetic families. Our study highlights the significance of density-dependent plasticity of a mating system and family structure in affecting the population change of small mammals.</p>

Evidence that catecholaminergic systems mediate dynamic colour change during explosive breeding events in toads
<p><span>Many animals communicate by rapidly (within minutes or seconds) changing their body coloration. We know, however, little about the physiology of this behaviour. Here we study how catecholaminergic hormones regulate rapid colour change in explosive breeding toads (<em>Duttaphrynus melanostictus</em>), where large groups of males gather and quickly change their colour from brown to bright yellow during reproduction. We find that both epinephrine (EP) and/or norepinephrine (NE) cause the toads' skin to become yellow in minutes, even in the absence of social and environmental cues associated with explosive breeding. We hypothesize that natural selection drives the evolution of rapid colour change by co-opting the functional effects of catecholaminergic action. If so, then hormones involved in "fight or flight" responsivity may mechanistically facilitate the emergence of dynamic visual signals that mediate communication in a sexual context. </span></p>

<p>This repository contains data and code used to produce Figures 1, 2, and S1 in <em>Towards a more dynamic metabolic theory of ecology to predict climate change effects on biological systems.</em></p> <p>The file "empirical_mte_database.csv" contains a database of peer-reviewed articles pulled from a Web of Science search of papers that empirically tested the temperature dependence predictions of the metabolic theory of ecology (Brown et al. 2004) between 2004 and 2024. </p> <p>The .zip file contains a jupyter notebook, julia project toml file and a README in order to reproduce the simulations illustrating how different temperature dynamics can lead to different inferred thermal performance curves in populations.</p> <p> </p>

Data from: Climate change consequences for differential adult survival and the mating system of a temperate breeding shorebird
<p>Managing for the effects of climate change on species whose populations are currently imperiled requires detailed knowledge of the relationship between their demographic rates and climate variables. We sought this information for the West Coast breeding population of snowy plover (<em>Charadrius nivosus</em>), which was federally listed as threatened in 1993 due to substantial declines in the numbers of plovers breeding along the coast and in the number of sites occupied for breeding. Snowy plovers employ a serially polygamous breeding system in which the male typically tends chicks to independence. This unusual breeding system is favored by male-biased sex ratios in local populations. As part of a multi-species study of the effect of climate change on population growth, we used mark-capture models to examine climate drivers of adult survival for 1,219 snowy plovers banded at Monterey Bay over 38 years and known to overwinter on the surrounding north-central California outer coast. Non-climate variables, including sex and unmeasured annual mortality risks (e.g., predator abundance) were the primary factors affecting adult survival. However, there is evidence that cold weather, particularly extended cold snaps with daily low temperatures below 2˚C and daily high temperatures below 10˚C, decreases overwinter survival. Exceptionally cold winters had a particularly strong effect on adult female plovers, contributing to the male-biased adult sex ratios. Future winter climate on the north-central California coast is projected to be generally warmer with fewer and shorter cold snaps. Reduced mortality from cold winter weather may mitigate other threats faced by plovers, such as anthropogenically enhanced predator populations, habitat loss, and accelerated sea level rise, while altering the adult sex ratio and potentially shifting the evolutionary landscape maintaining the plover's unusual breeding system.</p>

Periprandial changes in brain serotonergic system and food intake related neuropeptides
<p><span>In this work, we assessed periprandial serotonin and 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid abundance in several brain areas of rainbow trout, in parallel with the evaluation of gene expression of tryptophan hydroxilase 1 and 2, neuropeptides involved in the central control of food intake, and the quantification of plasma glucose and cortisol. The results showed severe changes in serotonergic systems around mealtime, the most prominent being the increase in their activity just after food intake, suggesting that serotonin has a relevant role in relation to the daily timing of food intake, probably triggering satiety signals. In addition, a temporal adjustment of neuropeptide expression and plasma cortisol was found in relation to food intake, supporting its role in the regulation of feeding behaviour.</span></p>
