Forecasts, score summary files, target observational data and meteorological driver files to accompany the manuscript "Skill of process-based forecasts relative to multiple null models varies across time and depth for water temperature and dissolved oxygen"

<p>This data publication includes raw ensemble forecast output (forecasts.zip), as well as summary score files (scores.zip) for process-based forecasts produced with the Forecasting Lake and Reservoir Ecosystems (FLARE) framework. In addition, it includes scores for climatology (climatology_scores.csv) and random walk (RW_scores.csv) null forecasts, formatted observational data of target variables (sunp-targets-insitu.csv), and meteorological driver files required for analysis to accompany the manuscript "Skill of process-based forecasts relative to multiple null models varies across time and depth for water temperature and dissolved oxygen". Forecasts were made of water temperature and dissolved oxygen at Lake Sunapee, NH in 2021 and 2022.</p>

Spatio-thermal depth correction of RGB-D sensors based on Gaussian Processes in real-time

<p>This RGB-D dataset is part is part of our publication</p> <p>Heindl, Christoph, et al. &quot;Spatio-thermal depth correction of RGB-D sensors based on Gaussian processes in real-time.&quot;&nbsp;<em>Tenth International Conference on Machine Vision (ICMV 2017)</em>. Vol. 10696. SPIE, 2018.</p> <p>Our capture setup consists of a RGB-D sensor looking towards a known planar object. The sensor is coupled with an electronic linear axis to adjust distance. We captured data at distances [40cm, 90cm, 10cm steps] in the temperate range of [25&deg;C, 35&deg;C, 1&deg;C steps]. At each temperature/distance tuple we grabbed 50 images from both RGB and IR (aligned with RGB) sensors. Data from: seasonal patterns and processes of migration in a long-distance migratory bird: energy or time minimization?

<p>Optimal migration theory prescribes adaptive strategies of energy, time or mortality minimization. To test alternative hypotheses of energy and time minimization migration we used multisensory data loggers recording time-resolved flight activity and light for positioning by geolocation in a long-distance migratory shorebird, little ringed plover Charadrius dubius. We could reject the hypothesis of energy minimization based on a relationship between stopover duration and subsequent flight time as predicted for a time minimizer. We found seasonally diverging slopes between stopover and flight durations in relation to the progress (time) of migration, which follows for a time minimizing policy if resource gradients increase and decrease, respectively. Total flight duration did not differ significantly between autumn and spring migration, although spring migration was 6% shorter. Overall duration of autumn migration was longer than that in spring, mainly due to a mid-migration stop in most birds, when they likely initiated moult. Overall migration speed was not significantly different between autumn and spring. Migratory flights often occurred as runs of 2-7 nocturnal flights on adjacent days, which may be countering a time minimization strategy. Other factors may influence a preference for nocturnal migration, such as avoiding flight in turbulent conditions, heat stress, and diurnal predators.</p>

Github page for analysis code:&nbsp;https://github.com/heikele/GAT_n4-p6</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Abstract from submitted paper:</p> <p>Event-related brain potentials have a strong impact on neurocognitive models, as they inform about the temporal sequence of cognitive processes. Nevertheless, their value for deciding among alternative cognitive architectures is partly limited by component overlap and the possibility of ambiguity regarding component identity. Here, we apply temporally-generalized multivariate pattern analysis &ndash; a recently-proposed machine learning method capable of tracking the evolution of neurocognitive processes over time &ndash; to constrain possible alternative architectures underlying the processing of semantic incongruency in sentences. In a spoken sentence paradigm, we replicate established N400/P600 correlates of semantic mismatch. Time-generalized decoding&nbsp;indicatesthat early vs. late mismatch-sensitive processes are (i) distinct in their neural substrate, arguing against recurrent or latency-shifted single process architectures, and (ii) partially overlapping in time,&nbsp;inconsistent withpredictions of strictly serial models. These results&nbsp;are in accordance withan incremental-cascading neurocognitive organization of semantic mismatch processing. Data from: Processing citizen science- and machine-annotated time-lapse imagery for biologically meaningful metrics

Time-lapse cameras facilitate remote and high-resolution monitoring of wild animal and plant communities, but the image data produced require further processing to be useful. Here we publish pipelines to process raw time-lapse imagery, resulting in count data (number of penguins per image) and 'nearest neighbour distance' measurements. The latter provide useful summaries of colony spatial structure (which can indicate phenological stage) and can be used to detect movement – metrics which could be valuable for a number of different monitoring scenarios, including image capture during aerial surveys. We present two alternative pathways for producing counts: 1) via the Zooniverse citizen science project Penguin Watch and 2) via a computer vision algorithm (Pengbot), and share a comparison of citizen science-, machine learning-, and expert- derived counts. We provide example files for 14 Penguin Watch cameras, generated from 63,070 raw images annotated by 50,445 volunteers. We encourage the use of this large open-source dataset, and the associated processing methodologies, for both ecological studies and continued machine learning and computer vision development.

Fossilization processes have little impact on tip-calibrated divergence time analyses

<p>The importance of palaeontological data in divergence time estimation has increased with the introduction of Bayesian Total-Evidence Dating methods which utilise fossil taxa directly for calibration, facilitated by the joint analysis of morphological and molecular data. Fossil taxa are invariably incompletely known as a consequence of taphonomic processes, resulting in the decidedly non-random distribution of missing data. The impact of non-random missing data on the accuracy and precision of clade age estimation is unknown. In an attempt to constrain the impact of taphonomy on tip-calibrated dating analyses, we compared clade ages estimated from a very complete morphological matrix to ages estimated from the same matrix permuted to simulate the progressive loss of anatomical information resulting from taphonomic processes. We demonstrate that systematically distributed missing data negatively influence clade age estimates, but that successive stages within the taphonomic process introduce greater differences in age estimates, when compared to estimates obtained from untreated data. Despite these effects, the general influence of missing data is weak, presumably due to the compensatory effect of extensive morphological data from extant taxa. We suggest that, in the absence of models that can explicitly account for taphonomic processes, morphological datasets should be constructed to minimise the impact of taphonomy on divergence time estimation.</p>
