Hourly weather data from the Arctic Tundra LTER wet sedge experimental site at Toolik Lake. The following parameters are measured every minute and averaged every hour: control plot air temperature and relative humidity at 3 meters and greenhouse plot air temperature and relative humidity at 1 meters (inside the greenhouse).

Late season thaw depth was measured in the Arctic Long Term Ecological Research (ARC LTER) experimental plots (1981 Moist Acidic Tussock, 1989 Moist Acidic Tussock, 2006 Low Fertilization Moist Acidic Tussock, 1989 Moist Non-acidic Tussock, 1989 Moist Non-acidic Non-tussock and 1989 Wet Sedge tundra) at Toolik Lake, Alaska using a steel thaw probe. Note: for 2017-2018 only 1989 Moist Non-Acidic Tussock Tundra and 2006 Low fertilization Moist Acidic Tussock Tundra were measured. For other sites it has become difficult to distinguish rocks from frozen soil with a steel thaw probe. Starting in 2023 weekly thaw depth measurements were made throughout the growing season in the 2006 Low fertilization Moist Acidic Tussock Tundra experiment.

Sample site descriptors include a unique assigned number (sortchem), site, date, time, depth, distance (downstream from a reference location), elevation, treatment, date-time, category, and water type (lake, surface, soil). Physical measures collected in the field include temperature (water, soil, well water), conductivity, pH, and average thaw depth in soil. Chemical analyses for the sample include alkalinity; dissolved inorganic and organic carbon (DIC and DOC); dissolved gases CO2 and CH4; inorganic and total dissolved nutrients (NH4, PO4, NO3, TDN, TDP); particulate carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus (PC, PN, and PP); cations (Ca, Mg, Na, K, and Si); and anions (SO4 and Cl).

File describing the meteorological conditions on Toolik Lake (named the Toolik Lake Climate station), adjacent to the Toolik Field Research Station (68 38'N, 149 36'W). This is a floating climate station and should not be confused with the Toolik Field Station Climate site (TFS Climate Station or Met Station) which is a terrestrial station (located on land). Note that this land station has been called the "Toolik Main Climate Station", and the station on the lake is located where the main lake sampling site is located so it has also been called the Toolik Lake Main Climate Station. Measurements include air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, and radiation. Note: There are no discharge data for 2013 because of equipment malfunction.

Control plots and plots amended with three different levels of nitrogen(N) and phosphorus(P), F10 (10 g/m2 N and 5 g/m2 P); F5 (5 g/m2 N and 2.5 g/m2 P); F2 (2 g/m2 N and 1 g/m2 P), were sampled.

The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: Zooplankton density,were taken with a 30 cm diameter plankton net with 156 um mesh plankton netting, for all samples collected from Toolik Lake and lakes near the Toolik Field Station, Arctic LTER from 2003 - 2017. The Arctic is one of the most rapidly warming regions on Earth. Responses to this warming involve acceleration of processes common to other ecosystems around the world (e.g., shifts in plant community composition) and changes to processes unique to the Arctic (e.g., carbon loss from permafrost thaw). The objectives of the Arctic Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Project for 2017-2023 are to use the concepts of biogeochemical and community “openness” and “connectivity” to understand the responses of arctic terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems to climate change and disturbance. These objectives will be met through continued long-term monitoring of changes in undisturbed terrestrial, stream, and lake ecosystems in the vicinity of Toolik Lake, Alaska, observations of the recovery of these ecosystems from natural and imposed disturbances, maintenance of existing long-term experiments, and initiation of new experimental manipulations. Based on these data, carbon and nutrient budgets and indices of species composition will be compiled for each component of the arctic landscape to compare the biogeochemistry and community dynamics of each ecosystem in relation to their responses to climate change and disturbance and to the propagation of those responses across the landscape.

Vegetation indices calculated from reflectance spectra collected at Arctic LTER experimental plots at Toolik Lake, Alaska during the 2007-2019 growing seasons. Long term experimental plots span several different vegetation types: Heath (HTH89), Moist Acidic Tussock (MAT89 and Low Fert), Moist Non-Acidic Tussock (MNAT), Non-Acidic Non-Tussock (NANT), Shrub (SHB), and Wet Sedge (WSG). Plots are differentiated by their experimental treatment and are located in replicate blocks.Canopy reflectance is measured by hand-held spectrophotometer and several indices of interest (NDVI, EVI, EVI2, PRI, WBI, and Chlorophyll index) are calculated.

Thaw depth was measured since 1990 using a steel probe in the Tussock watershed just south of Toolik Lake, Alaska, on a gentle slope dominated by moist, non-acidic tussock tundra. At least two surveys are conducted each summer, on 2 July and on 11 August (plus or minus 1 day).

Arctic LTER Streams Chemistry Toolik Field Station, Alaska 1978 to 2019.
Since 1983, the Streams Project at the Toolik Field Station has monitored physical, chemical, and biological parameters in a 5-km, fourth-order reach of the Kuparuk River near its intersection with the Dalton Highway and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. In 1989, similar studies were begun on a 3.5-km, third-order reach of a second stream, Oksrukuyik Creek. In each river, physical conditions (such as discharge and temperature), nutrient levels, primary production, insects, and fishes are monitored throughout the summer. Also, we conduct experimental fertilization of the Kuparuk River and Oksrukuyik Creek to determine the effects of added phosphorus and nitrogen on primary productivity, insect communities, and fish growth in arctic rivers. The Oksrukuyik Creek has not been fertilized since 1996. The Kuparuk River received phosphorus additions from 1983 through 2016. Station sites are relative distance from the original nutrient drippers for both the Kuparuk and Oksrukuyik. Kuparuk stations include sites in a reference, recovery, and fertilized reach. Reaches were defined based on the location of nutrient addition (see methods).

Arctic Grayling length, weight and tag data from Arctic LTER Streams project, Toolik Filed Station Alaska, 1985 to 2018
Since 1983, the Streams Project at the Toolik Field Station has monitored physical, chemical, and biological parameters in a 5-km, fourth-order reach of the Kuparuk River near its intersection with the Dalton Highway and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. In 1989, similar studies were begun on a 3.5-km, third-order reach of a second stream, Oksrukuyik Creek. Fish were collected on each river. Station locations, representing kilomter values certain distances from original phosphorus dripper (see method) were noted. 1985 to 2012 long-term tagging file for Arctic Grayling (Thymallus arcticus) on the Kuparuk River. All grayling adults and juveniles captured during the field season are measured, weighed, tagged and released. Grayling were tagged originally with a colored tag with a number. In 1993, researchers started pit tagging the grayling. These pit tags can be read with an antenna to track the migration of the grayling throughout the Kuparuk River system. Arctic grayling young-of-the-year (YOY) were caught multiple times during each summer and measured and weighed as well. Hourly weather data from the LTER Moist Acidic Tussock Experimental plots. The station was installed in 1990 in block 2 of the Toolik LTER experimental moist acidic tussock plots. The plots are located on a hillside near Toolik Lake (68 38' N, 149 36'W). Global solar radiation, photosynthetic active radiation, unfrozen precipitation, air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and wind direction are measured at 3 meters. Additional sensors in greenhouses and shade houses plots measure air temperature, relative humidity and photosynthetic active radiation during the growing season. The sensors are read every minute and averaged or totaled every hour.
