Trace Element Concentrations in Feathers of Migratory Birds from the Southern Caspian Sea Region, 2013
This dataset presents concentrations of eight trace elements—arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn)—measured in secondary flight feathers of waterbird species wintering along the southern Caspian Sea coast of Iran. Samples were collected in February 2013 from multiple species representing diverse feeding guilds and avian families. The data support ecological assessments of contaminant exposure in migratory birds and provide insight into trophic-level accumulation patterns. Elemental analysis was performed using standardized laboratory protocols, and values are reported in micrograms per gram dry weight (µg/g dw). This dataset contributes to regional biomonitoring efforts and can be used for comparative studies in avian ecotoxicology and environmental risk assessment.

Quantitative assessment of trace and macro element compositions of Cassava (Manihot esculenta) storage roots enriched with Β-Carotene as influenced by genotypes and growing locations
Cassava's important mineral contents depends on some factors, including genetic and growing locational factors. The study aimed to evaluate the influence of genotype and growing locations on the mineral concentrations in yellow-fleshed cassava root genotypes. Twenty-five pipeline yellow-fleshed cassava genotypes and three white-fleshed varieties (check samples) were planted at five different experimental fields for two seasons, each representing the major agroecological zones in Nigeria. Standard laboratory protocols were employed in the sampling to ensure zero contamination, and the trace and macro elements were determined using the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopic method (ICPOES). The trace and macro elements identified in all the genotypes and varieties investigated were Fe, Mn, B, Cu, Mo, Co, Ni, Zn, and Al; Ca, Mg, Na, K. P, and S respectively. Genotype and growing location had a highly significant (p < 0.05) effect on all the trace elements except Ti and Cr. However, there was no interactive effect between genotype and growing location on all the trace elements except for Pb and Zn. Among the explanatory variables, the variable growing location was the most influential on macro and trace elements. Conclusively, genotypes 01/1442 and 01/1273 have outstanding trace and macro element concentrations.

Trace element composition of drinking water in Almaty
<p>Water is an important component of all life on Earth, and water pollution with heavy metals can lead to detrimental consequences for public health. The purpose of this study was to determine the health risks caused by trace elements present in the drinking water supply systems of Almaty City. As part of this research, the elemental composition of 78 drinking water samples taken in winter, summer, and autumn of 2023 in different areas of the city was studied.Based on the data obtained, drinking water contamination indices were calculated for heavy metal groups, and the degree of water suitability for drinking purposes was assessed for each sampling point.</p>
Supplementary information from: A systematic review of trace elements in the tissues of bats (Chiroptera)
<p>Bats constitute about 22% of known mammal species; they have various ecological roles and provide many ecosystem services. Bats suffer from several threats caused by anthropization, including exposure to toxic metals and metalloids. In our systematic review, we analyzed 75 papers to investigate how species, diet, and tissue type impact bioaccumulation in bat species all over the world. Most studies documented element accumulation in fur, liver, and kidney; at least 36 metals and metalloids have been measured in bat tissues, among the most studied were mercury and zinc. Comparisons with known toxicological thresholds for other mammals showed concerning values for mercury and zinc in bat hair, lead and some essential metals in liver, and iron and calcium in kidneys. Moreover, accumulation patterns in tissues differed depending on bat diet: insectivorous bats showed higher metal concentrations in fur than in liver and kidney while frugivorous species showed higher values in liver and kidney than in fur. This review points out several information gaps in the understanding of metal contamination in bats, including a lack of measured toxicity thresholds specific for bat tissues. Data on trace element bioaccumulation and its associated health effects on bats is important for conservation of bat species, many of which are threatened.</p>

Sorption strategies for recovering critical raw materials: Extracting trace elements from saltworks brines
<p><span>Rising population, industrialisation, and resource demand intensify resource limitations, particularly critical for European Union (EU) industries dependent on raw materials. Based on economic importance and supply risk, 32 Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) and two strategic raw materials were identified in 2023. With most CRMs sourced outside the EU, sea mining emerges as a promising secondary resource for CRMs extraction from seawater, although the harvest of Trace Elements (TEs) will require energy-intensive processes. Several EU-funded projects explore circular economy and resource recovery, considering sorption methods’ potential to extract TEs from brines. Commercial polymeric (IRC747, S940, MTX8010) and inorganic (SbTreat, SrTreat) sorbents, plus another synthesised inorganic one (CuHCF), were assessed for recovering TEs (cobalt, gallium, germanium, rubidium, strontium, caesium) from saltworks brines (bitterns). Polymeric sorbents, containing chelating functional groups, effectively targeted cobalt, gallium, and strontium, commercial inorganic sorbents favoured cobalt, gallium, germanium and strontium, and CuHCF targeted rubidium and caesium. Kinetic batch experiments demonstrated rapid element retention (≤30 min) by most sorbents. In dynamic column experiments, high sorption capacities were observed for cobalt and gallium with the polymeric sorbents, particularly for aminophosphonic sorbents (IRC747 and S940) (≥2.1 mg/g). SrTreat exhibited also a high sorption capacity of 7 mg/g for strontium, SbTreat achieved 20 mg/g for gallium and germanium and CuHCF retained rubidium (10 mg/g) and caesium (70 mg/g). Acidic desorption effectively recovered (>70 %) most of the elements from the sorbents, achieving concentration factors up to 708 for cobalt with IRC747 and S940, highlighting the potential valorisation of saltworks bitterns.</span></p>

<p>In an era of rapid environmental change and increasing human presence, researchers need efficient tools for tracking contaminants to monitor the health of Antarctic flora and fauna. Here, we examined the utility of leopard seal whiskers as a biomonitoring tool that reconstructs time-series of significant ecological and physiological biomarkers. Leopard seals (<em>Hydrurga leptonyx</em>) are a sentinel species in the Western Antarctic Peninsula due to their apex predator status and top-down effects on several Antarctic species. However, there are few data on their contaminant loads. We analyzed leopard seal whiskers (n = 18 individuals, n = 981 segments) collected during 2018–2019 field seasons to acquire longitudinal profiles of non-essential (Hg, Pb, and Cd) and essential (Se, Cu, and Zn) trace elements, stable isotope (ẟ<sub>15</sub>N and ẟ<sub>13</sub>C) values and to assess Hg risk with Se:Hg molar ratios. Whiskers provided between 46 and 286 cumulative days of growth with a mean ~125 days per whisker (n = 18). Adult whiskers showed variability in non-essential trace elements over time that could partly be explained by changes in diet. Whisker Hg levels were insufficient (<20 ppm) to consider most seals being at "high" risk for Hg toxicity. Nevertheless, maximum Hg concentrations observed in this study were greater than that of leopard seal hair measured two decades ago. However, variation in the Se:Hg molar ratios over time suggest that Se may detoxify Hg burden in leopard seals. Overall, we provide evidence that the analysis of leopard seal whiskers allows for the reconstruction of time-series ecological and physiological data and can be valuable for opportunistically monitoring the health of the leopard seal population and their Antarctic ecosystem during climate change.</p>
