Data set from the design of experiment assessment rubric, from university students / future teachers

Using an assessment rubric comprising three levels of success, we evaluated six aspects of designing an experiment, which we call dimensions. This way, specific challenges were identified in two of the dimensions: forming a hypothesis and manipulating the experimental variables, where students often failed to succeed and get lower scores.

The data presented here were collected from four (4) diagnostic worksheets, which were made available to students at the beginning of the semester, where a theoretical introduction to the course is given, with reference to learning theories and their use in the teaching of Physics. Therefore, data were collected prior to discussions about the inquiry-based approach, experimental investigations, and the scientific content, such as the concepts and phenomena mentioned in the worksheets.

For the present study, we slightly modified and used a rubric that has been proposed to assess the DoE by primary and secondary school students (Lefkos et al., 2011). The modified rubric, has already been tested in a pilot study with fruitful results (Lefkos, 2024).

Lefkos, I. (2024). Physical, psychological, academic, and sexual abuse of university students in five Latin American countries: characteristics and association with student satisfaction

Background: A high rate of student abuse has been reported in various studies. This study aimed to characterize the abuse of university students in five Latin American countries and its association with student satisfaction.

Methods: An analytical transversal study was conducted, in which 2,141 undergraduate students from Paraguay, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, and Panama were surveyed. A validated questionnaire was applied to evaluate four types of abuse (Cronbach's Alpha: 0.90): psychological, physical, academic, and sexual. In addition, students’ perception of satisfaction of four items in the university environment (Cronbach's Alpha: 0.85) was also analyzed.

Results: It was found that the older students were, the more dissatisfied they were with “logistics” (aPR: 1.02; 95% CI: 1.00-1.04; p-value; 0.014) and the top-third segment of those who perceived “sexual abuse” were more dissatisfied with the teaching provided by their universities (aPR: 1.23; 95% CI: 1.00-1.52; p-value: 0.048). Moreover, those who were most dissatisfied with the agreements were part of the top-third segment of those who perceived sexual abuse (aPR: 1.16; 95% CI: 1.03-1.32; p-value: 0.016) and those in the country of Panama were less dissatisfied with “agreements” (RPa: 0.70; 95% CI: 0.66-0.073; p-value<0.001). The countries of Colombia (aPR: 0.08; IC95%: 0.01-0.59; p-value: 0.014) and Panama (aPR: 0.57; 95% CI: 0.52-0.64; p-value<0.001) were less dissatisfied with investigation programs.

Conclusions: The perception of ‘sexual abuse’ was related with dissatisfaction with teaching and agreements.

Individual and collective university students' self-efficacy on climate change. Raw data set.

The dataset comprises 12 items on the topic of "self-efficacy on climate change" and additionally some items on person-related information. The items were developed with individual self-efficacy (8 items, iSE1 to iSE8) and collective self-efficacy (4 items, coSE1 to coSE4) in mind. The instruction was: "How do you think about yourself? Please tick to what extent the following statements apply to you" [translated from German]. A six-point Likert-type scale was used as response scale, headed with numbers from 1 to 6, only the ends of the response scale were verbally labelled (1 = "strongly disagree" to 6 = "strongly agree" [translated from German]). The items were used in German. The English translations were added to the dataset in square brackets. Data collection took place at a German university in 2022. The data set includes N = 145 university students studying to become geography teachers.
