General Lake Model-Aquatic EcoDynamics model parameter set for Falling Creek Reservoir, Vinton, Virginia, USA 2013-2019

The General Lake Model (GLM), an open-source, one-dimensional hydrodynamic model, was used to simulate physical, chemical, and biological variables in Falling Creek Reservoir, Vinton, Virginia, USA between 15 May 2013 and 31 December 2019. GLM (v.3.2.0a3) was coupled to the Aquatic EcoDynamics (AED) module library via the Framework for Aquatic Biogeochemical Modeling (FABM). GLM-AED requires three configuration files to run the model. First, the glm3.nml file configures lake metadata (including hypsometry), meteorological driver data, stream inflow and outflow driver data files, and physical response variables (mixing parameters and sediment heat zones). Second, the aed2_20220111_2DOCpools.nml file configures various biogeochemical modules for the simulation of oxygen, carbon, silica, nitrogen, phosphorus, organic matter, and phytoplankton. Third, the aed2_phyto_pars_4Jan2022.nml file configures all parameters pertaining to phytoplankton dynamics. Meteorological data, two surface stream inflow files, a submerged oxygenation inflow file, and outflow file used in this calibration are also included.

Ice cover data for Falling Creek Reservoir and Beaverdam Reservoir, Vinton, Virginia, USA for December 2013-December 2022

Ice cover was recorded at Falling Creek Reservoir and Beaverdam Reservoir (both located in Vinton, Virginia, USA) using multiple methods. The ice cover record for Falling Creek Reservoir began in the winter of 2013-2014 and Beaverdam Reservoir beginning in the winter of 2020-2021. Falling Creek Reservoir and Beaverdam Reservoir are owned and operated by the Western Virginia Water Authority as a primary and secondary drinking water source, respectively, for Roanoke, Virginia. These two reservoirs are some of the southernmost waterbodies in the United States that exhibit ice cover during the winter. Given incipient climate change, Falling Creek Reservoir and Beaverdam Reservoir's ice cover data represent an important record of warming for waterbodies in the southeastern United States. Ice cover presence was assessed using multiple methods: visual observation of ice spanning the deep hole (from an observer standing on a reservoir's dam); visual observation via an automated camera deployed near the deep hole; water temperature data from a profile of sensors deployed at a reservoir's deepest site; upwelling shortwave radiation and albedo measured by a meteorological station deployed on a metal structure located over Falling Creek Reservoir's deep hole; and dissolved oxygen sensors deployed at multiple depths at the deep hole of both reservoirs.

Methane ebullition and diffusion rates, turbulence, water temperature, and water depth data from Falling Creek Reservoir (Virginia, USA) in the ice-free period during 2016-2019

This dataset includes weekly and subweekly methane ebullition and diffusion rates collected from March through November in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 in Falling Creek Reservoir (FCR), a drinking water reservoir owned and managed by the Western Virginia Water Authority and located in Vinton, Virginia, USA. In 2016, ebullition rates were measured at four near-shore sites along a longitudinal gradient in FCR that included four replicate locations within each site, for a total of 16 sites in the reservoir. In 2017, methane emission rates and five different potential environmental driver variables (water temperature, wind speed, pressure, turbulence, primary production) were measured at five longitudinal transects that included four replicate sites per transect, for a total of 20 sites in the reservoir. In 2018, ebullition was measured at the same five longitudinal transects but with two replicate sites per transect, for a total of 10 sites. In 2019, ebullition was only measured at the furthest upstream transect monitored in 2017-2018, with four replicate sites within that transect. The dataset consists of four tables: 1) weekly methane ebullition and diffusion rates and the water depths at each of the 24 unique monitoring sites; 2) 10-minute resolution sediment-water interface and surface water temperatures from 16 sites in 2017; 3) weekly sediment-water interface and surface turbulence at the four transects in 2017; and 4) geographical coordinates of each of the 24 sites in the reservoir.
