The effect of interactive ozone chemistry on weak and strong stratospheric polar vortex events

Modeling and observational studies have reported effects of stratospheric ozone extremes on Northern Hemisphere spring climate. Recent work has further suggested that the coupling of ozone chemistry and dynamics amplifies the surface response to midwinter sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs). Here we study the importance of interactive ozone chemistry in representing the stratospheric polar vortex and Northern Hemisphere winter surface climate variability. We contrast two simulations from the interactive and specified chemistry (and thus ozone) versions of the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model, which is designed to isolate the impact of interactive ozone on polar vortex variability. In particular, we analyze the response with and without interactive chemistry to midwinter SSWs, March SSWs, and strong polar vortex events (SPVs). With interactive chemistry, the stratospheric polar vortex is stronger and more SPVs occur, but we find little effect on the frequency of midwinter SSWs. At the surface, interactive chemistry results in a pattern resembling a more negative North Atlantic Oscillation following midwinter SSWs but with little impact on the surface signatures of late winter SSWs and SPVs. These results suggest that including interactive ozone chemistry is important for representing North Atlantic and European winter climate variability.

Allele dataset of western grasswren for use in VORTEX (PVA analysis)

Conservation translocations have become an increasingly popular method to restore or secure vulnerable populations. However, translocations greatly vary in success. The use of population viability analysis (PVA) may increase the likelihood of meeting translocation goals. However, the quality of PVAs to inform translocations is dependent on the availability of ecological data and clear translocation objectives to guide them. Here, we used PVAs to inform the planned conservation translocation of the Western Grasswren (Amytornis textilis textilis) from mainland Shark Bay onto Dirk Hartog Island, Western Australia. A range of translocation scenarios was modelled and scored against success criteria as determined by translocation objectives. Simulations of 20-year outcomes found that a minimum founder population of 112 individuals meets all success criteria. PVA supported sourcing individuals from two subpopulations to maximise genetic diversity. No impact to source populations was detected for the proposed harvest quantities despite conservative estimates of initial source population sizes. Here we demonstrate that creating clear, measurable objectives alongside a PVA lessens ambiguity about which translocation scenarios could be viable. In doing so, we have identified the minimum translocation sizes needed to maintain genetic diversity and population growth, thus increasing the likelihood of translocation success without impacting the source population.

Dependence of tropical cyclone weakening rate in response to an imposed moderate environmental vertical wind shear on the warm-core strength and height of the initial vortex

This study investigated the dependence of the early tropical cyclone (TC) weakening rate in response to an imposed moderate environmental vertical wind shear (VWS) on the warm-core strength and height of the TC vortex using idealized numerical simulations. Results show that the weakening of the warm core by upper-level ventilation is the primary factor leading to the early TC weakening in response to an imposed environmental VWS. The upper-level ventilation is dominated by eddy radial advection of the warm-core air. The TC weakening rate is roughly proportional to the warm-core strength and height of the initial TC vortex. The boundary-layer ventilation shows no relationship with the early weakening rate of the TC in response to an imposed moderate VWS. The findings suggest that some previous diverse results regarding the TC weakening in environmental VWS could be partly due to the different warm-core strengths and heights of the initial TC vortex.

The magnetic recording stability of vortex state irregularly shaped natural iron oxides: raw data, processing and micromagnetic modelling results

Magnetic minerals, especially those existing within the vortex domain state, serve as the primary natural archives of ancient magnetic fields. In this investigation, we introduce an innovative method to examine the magnetic stability of remanence-bearing minerals. This method involves integrating Synchrotron-based Ptychographic X-ray Computed Nano-tomography (PXCT) with micromagnetic modelling. PXCT, a tomographic technique, is a non-destructive resource, which enables its application to valuable (unique) samples. When applied to a microscopic sample of weakly magnetic carbonate rock, PXCT revealed numerous nanoscopic grains of magnetite/maghemite, each exhibiting diverse morphologies, alongside various non-magnetic minerals present in the rock matrix. Subsequently, micromagnetic models were employed to predict the properties of these grains and investigate the potential impacts of irregular morphologies.
