WALOWA (WAve LOads on WAlls) - Large-scale Experiments in the Delta Flume on Overtopping Wave Loads on Vertical Walls

Coasts of low lying countries are often comprised of a gentle foreshore and shallow waters, followed by a dike and a promenade. At the end of the promenade buildings or storm walls are constructed. This setting makes it possible for waves to overtop the dike and impact on the storm wall or building. Especially during storm season the overtopping waves induce large loads on these structures. New scenarios for climate change and sea level rise make it worthwhile to invest in research regarding overtopping wave loads.

Within the European project 'Wave Loads on Walls' (WaLoWa) model tests in the Delta flume (The Netherlands) were conducted. It is the aim to study overtopping wave loads on storm walls and buildings. The project is coordinated by Ghent University (Belgium), in cooperation with TU Delft (The Netherlands), RWTH Aachen (Germany), University of Bari, University of L'Aquila, University of Calabria and University of Florence (Italy) and Flanders Hydraulics Research (Belgium). The project is financed by a grant by Hydralab+ in the framework of the EC Horizon 2020 program.

A model geometry comprised of a sandy beach, a sloping dike, promenade and wall structure was built into the Delta flume. The beach alone consists of 1000m³ sand material and was an essential part of the structure, to obtain the broken wave conditions similar to reality. Waves representing a storm with a 1000 year return period and an additional water level to account for sea level rise result in the tested superstorm conditions.

Measurements of the water surface elevation were taken close to the paddle, along the mildly sloping foreshore and at the dike toe location by resistance type wave gauges mounted to the flume side wall. The bathymetry of the sandy foreshore was measured by a mechanical profiler before and after the test. The overtopping flow properties thickness and velocity were measured by resistance type wave gauges, ultra-sonic distance sensors, paddle wheels and an electro-magnetic current meter installed along the promenade. Finally, the impact forces and pressures on the wall were measured by compression load cells and pressure sensors respectively. The data-set was complemented by a number of synoptic measurements, such as laser scan profiles, GoPro images, High-speed camera images, Digital camera images. Due to its large storage size, these data are provided on request.

Development and analysis of entropy stable no-slip wall boundary conditions for the Eulerian model for viscous and heat conducting compressible flows

The database used in the submission of "Development and analysis of entropy stable no-slip wall boundary conditions implementation of the Eulerian model for viscous and heat conducting compressible flows."

Abstract: Nonlinear entropy stability analysis is used to derive entropy stable no-slip wall boundary conditions for the Eulerian model proposed by Svärd ( Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 2018 ). and its spatial discretization based on entropy stable collocated discontinuous Galerkin operators with the summation-by-parts property for unstructured grids. A set of viscous test cases of increasing complexity are simulated using both the Eulerian and the classic compressible Navier–Stokes models. The numerical results obtained with the two models are compared, and differences and similarities are then highlighted.

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Data in support of Wall and Edmunds 2013 Biological Bulletin, v225 no. 2, 92-101

These data were generated from a one-time experiment in support of a coral ecophysiology manuscript published in The Biological Bulletin. Wall and Edmunds (2013) The Biological Bulletin vol. 225 no. 2: 92-101 Juvenile colonies of massive Porites spp. were exposed to manipulated pH and bicarbonate ([HCO3 -]) in situ to test the hypothesis that ocean acidification (OA) does not affect respiration and calcification. Incubations lasted 28 h and exposed corals to ambient temperature and light with ecologically relevant water motion. Three treatments were applied: (1) ambient conditions of pH 8.04 and 1751 μmol HCO3 - kg-1 (Treatment 1), (2) pCO2-induced ocean acidification of pH 7.73 and 2011 μmol HCO3 - kg-1 (Treatment 2), and (3) pCO2 and HCO3 --enriched seawater of pH 7.69 and 2730 μmol HCO3 - kg-1 (Treatment 3). The third treatment providing elevated [HCO3 -] was used to test for stimulatory effects of dissolved inorganic carbon on calcification under low pH and low saturation of aragonite (Ωarag), but it does not reflect conditions expected to occur under CO2-driven OA. Calcification of juvenile massive Porites spp. was affected by treatments, with an 81% elevation in Treatment 3 versus Treatment 1, but no difference between Treatments 1 and 2; respiration and the metabolic expenditure concurrent with calcification remained unaffected. These findings indicate that juvenile massive Porites spp. are resistant to short exposures to OA in situ, and separately, that they can increase calcification at low pH and low Ωarag if [HCO3 -] is elevated. Juvenile Porites spp. may therefore be limited by dissolved inorganic carbon under ambient pCO2 conditions.

leaf anatomy, vascular traits and nanomechanical cell-wall properties in European beech provenances

The file contains leaf anatomical data (thickness of individual leaf parenchyma layers), vascular traits of leaf midrib (vessel area and density and derived parameters), and nanomechanical properties of xylem cell walls (modulus of elasticity, adhesion, energy dissipation and deformation), which were studied in 15 provenances of European beech, originating from sites distributed across the whole range of the species. The trial plot (locality Tale in central Slovakia) was established in 1998 with 2-years-old seedling within the international provenance experiment with beech coordinated by the Institute of Forest Genetics of Thuenen Institute Grosshansdorf. Leaf anatomy was studied using light microscopy, while fluorescent microscopy was used to acquire vascular traits and atomic-force microscopy for nanomechanical cell-wall traits. Sun leaves were collected from 4 trees per provenances, 1 leaf per tree was analyzed. AFM was done in a subset of 8 provenances. The aim of the study was assessing geographical trends of the studied traits and their association with climate at the sites of origin to reveal potential adaptive variation patterns.
