On the alignment of academic publishers’ embargos with H2020 requirements - Dataset

-- ATTENTION PLEASE: RIGHT NOW THE DATASET IS UNDER INDEPENDENT DOUBLE CHECK TO TEST THE PRESENCE OF POSSIBLE ERRORS : PLEASE CONTACT THE AUTHOR FOR FURTHER INFO --

This dataset refers to the breifing paper "On the alignment of academic publishers’ embargos with H2020 requirements" (https://nexacenter.org/nexacenterfiles/WoS-Romeo-analysis%20APS-final.pdf) published in the ambit of the European project Pasteur4OA (http://www.pasteur4oa.eu/).

We wanted to understand how the publishing behaviour of EU researchers might be affected by the H2020 policy requirement to ensure Open Access (OA) to all articles from EU-funded projects within 6 months for science and engineering projects and 12 months for humanities and social science studies. Many publishers impose an embargo on ‘Green’ Open Access, where researchers deposit their articles in repositories, and these embargoes can be longer than the maximum permitted by the H2020 policy. The issue was whether researchers may have to alter their publishing behaviour or can they continue to publish in journals of their choice and still comply with the H2020 requirements. The following research questions were posed:

1) What is the level of compliance of current publishers’ embargo policies with the H2020 requirements?
2) How many journals are compliant with the H2020 requirements?

The overall findings were that 90% of publishers used by EU researchers to publish their work and 94% of articles published by EU researchers are compatible with the H2020 Open Access policy requirements. Our conclusion is that only in a small minority of cases – 5-10% – would EU researchers’ normal publishing behaviour run contrary to H2020 rules.

The zip file containing the data used, divided by access to the post-prints:

- ok Open Access

- no Open Access

- unclear

- OA with restrictions, but compliant to H2020

- OA with restrictions, not compliant to H200

- OA with restrictions, not clear

The data model is available on the paper (https://nexacenter.org/nexacenterfiles/WoS-Romeo-analysis%20APS-final.pdf)

A Questionnaire to Assess the Research Practices and Services Related to the Academic and Research Staff at the Institutions of Higher Education in Palestine - Survey Data

Data generated as part of a needs assessment survey conducted as part of ROMOR, a project funded by the Erasmus Plus Programme of the European Union in the period from October 2016 to October 2019. A questionnaire was prepared under the supervision of Palestinian Universities participating in the project. The results of the study will be used to create and develop institutional repositories to store the digital outputs of scientific research at the institutions of higher education in Palestine. The results will be also used to provide the vocational and academic training, and the institutional policies required to manage, organize the use, and populate the prospective repositories. This objective will contribute in promoting the access to and benefit of the results of scientific research in Palestine, and increase its impact at the local and international levels. This questionnaire was distributed to the representative of each institution, who in turn forwarded it to the suitable persons in the institution. Data was collected between January 4th and February 19th 2017. Paper and electronic versions of a questionnaire were prepared in both Arabic and English. The project coordinators at partner PS HEIs were requested to circulate the electronic questionnaire to all researchers and members of academic staff. Data was collected by ROMOR partners at:
● The Islamic University of Gaza (IUG) ● Al-Quds Open University (QOU) ● Birzeit University (BZU) ● Palestine Technical University-Kadoori (KAD)

Data for: A path forward: creating an academic culture of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion

Institutions of higher education (IHE) throughout the United States have a long history of acting out various levels of commitment to diversity advancement, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Despite decades of DEI "efforts," the academy is fraught with legacies of racism that uphold white supremacy and prevent marginalized populations from full participation. Furthermore, politicians have not only weaponized education but passed legislation to actively ban DEI programs and censor general education curricula (https://tinyurl.com/antiDEI). Ironically, systems of oppression are particularly apparent in the fields of Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology (EECB)–which recognize biological diversity as essential for ecological integrity and resilience. Yet, amongst EECB faculty, people who do not identify as cis-heterosexual, non-disabled, affluent white males are poorly represented. Furthermore, IHE lack metrics to quantify DEI as a priority. Here we show that only 30.3% of US-faculty positions advertised in EECB from Jan 2019-May 2020 required a diversity statement; diversity statement requirements did not correspond with state-level diversity metrics. Though many announcements "encourage women and minorities to apply," empirical evidence demonstrates that hiring committees at most institutions did not prioritize an applicant's DEI advancement potential. We suggest a model for change and call on administrators and faculty to implement SMART (i.e., Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely) strategies for DEI advancement across IHE throughout the United States. We anticipate our quantification of diversity statement requirements relative to other application materials will motivate institutional change in both policy and practice when evaluating a candidate's potential "fit". IHE must embrace a leadership role to not only shift the academic culture to one that upholds DEI, but to educate and include people who represent the full diversity of our society. In the current context of political censure of education including book banning and backlash aimed at Critical Race Theory, which further reinforce systemic white supremacy, academic integrity and justice are more critical than ever.

Perceived academic stress, hair and saliva cortisol concentrations, and their relationship with anthropometric measures associated with obesity in first-year medical students.

Cortisol plays an important role between stress, weight gain, and the development of obesity. Therefore, we investigated the association between stress, eating behavior, cortisol, and anthropometric measures related to obesity in a sample of medical students. We determined cortisol concentrations by ELISA and related it to self-reported stress, eating behavior, and anthropometric measurements throughout the academic period. We report an increase in hair cortisol, higher self-reported stress scores, and BMI mainly in females. Finally, we found evidence of positive associations between capillary cortisol and BMI. Also, eating behavior is affected by perceived stress mainly in females.

In this database, we provide weight variables, BMI, psychometric tests, and hormonal determinations.

You can see two sheets in the Excel file. Sheet 1 includes the raw data and sheet 2 includes a description of each variable, as well as the bibliography (article or book) where each survey or protocol was obtained.

In addition, the data specify the units of the hormonal variables, as well as the units of the anthropometric variables. If you have questions about the interpretation of psychometric test scores, you can contact our team for further details.

Bevacizumab plus erlotinib versus erlotinib alone as first line treatment of patients with EGFR-mutated advanced nonsquamous non-small cell lung cancer. BEVacizumab plus ERLotinib studY (BEVERLY): an academic, multicenter, randomised phase III trial.

Background. Adding bevacizumab to erlotinib prolonged PFS of patients with EGFR-mutated advanced NSCLC in the Japanese NEJ026 trial, but limited data were available in non-Asian patients. BEVERLY is an Italian, multicenter, randomized phase III trial of bevacizumab plus erlotinib versus erlotinib alone as first-line treatment of advanced EGFR-mutated NSCLC.

Methods. Eligible patients were randomized 1:1 to erlotinib (150mg daily) plus bevacizumab (15mg/kg iv q3w) or erlotinib alone, until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity. Center, ECOG PS and type of mutation (ex19 deletion vs ex21 L858R vs others) were stratification variables. Investigator-assessed PFS (IA-PFS) and blinded-independent centrally-reviewed PFS (BICR-PFS) were co-primary endpoints. With 80% power in detecting a 0·60 HR and 2–sided α error 0·05, 126 events out of 160 patients were needed. The trial was registered as NCT02633189 and EudraCT 2015-002235-17.

Findings. From Apr 11, 2016 to Feb 27, 2019, 160 pts were randomized to erlotinib pus bevacizumab (80) or erlotinib alone (80). Baseline characteristics were balanced between arms; 34 (42·5%) patients in erlotinib plus bevacizumab arm and 43 (53·8%) in erlotinib arm were former or current smokers. At a median follow-up of 36·3 months, 140 PFS events (87·5%) were reported, 68 with erlotinib plus bevacizumab and 72 with erlotinib. Median IA-PFS was 15·4 months (95% CI 12·2–18·6) with erlotinib plus bevacizumab and 9·6 months (95% CI 8·2–10·6) with erlotinib (HR 0·66; 95%CI: 0·47–0·92). BICR-PFS analysis confirmed this result. A significant interaction with treatment effect was found for smoking habit (P=0·0323): former or current smokers receiving erlotinib plus bevacizumab had a longer PFS (16·9 months [95% CI 10·2–21·8] versus 8·8 months [95% CI 5·6–9·6]) than those receiving erlotinib alone.

Hypertension (grade≥3: 24% vs 5%), skin rash (grade≥3: 31% vs 14%), thromboembolic events (any grade: 11% vs 4%), and proteinuria (any grade: 23% vs 6%) were more frequent with the combination treatment.

Interpretation. The addition of bevacizumab to first-line erlotinib significantly prolonged PFS in Italian patients with EGFR-mutated NSCLC, without unexpected safety issues.

Finite Element model data for Academic Rotor bladed-disc system

A computational finite element based technique is proposed for developing a stochastic reduced order model for rotating bladed disc with spatial random inhomogeneities. The spatial inhomogeneities imply the system to be randomly mistuned. The formulation assumes the availability of a high fidelity finite element (FE) model for the tuned system. The corresponding FE matrices are antisymmetric on account of the Coriolis forces due to rotation. The spatial inhomogeneities, available from limited point measurements on the blades, are modelled as non-Gaussian random fields with arbitrary distributions. A low order stochastic computational model is developed by projecting the FE model onto a reduced dimensional state space defined in terms of specified observable nodal points and expressing the stochasticity through an arbitrary polynomial chaos (aPC) basis. This model enables probabilistic quantification of the variabilities in the system response and estimating failure probabilities. The methodology enables drastic reduction in the state space and stochastic dimensions, addresses the practical difficulties with having limited measurable data points, antisymmetric FE matrices, aPC representation in complex irregular geometries and carrying out probabilistic analyses on industrial systems, at significantly reduced computational costs. The methodology is illustrated through an academic rotor and an industrial rotor blade.
