Preventing Struck-by Hazards: Defying Risk-habituation via Virtual Accident Simulation
<p>Repeated exposure to struck-by hazards in road work zones generates workers’ habituation to risks related to those hazards, a key contributor to accidents in road work zones. Thus, analyzing the development of risk habituation and providing proper intervention are crucial to preventing accidents in road work zones. In this context, this study employs a virtual reality (VR) environment as a behavioral intervention tool to investigate its effect on mitigating a decline in workers’ vigilance with habituation to hazards in workplaces. A virtual environment that simulates a road maintenance task was developed and used to repeatedly expose subjects to struck-by hazards in road construction sites. A VR accident was simulated in response to the emergence of habituation to hazards within the virtual environment. The intervention effect was investigated to analyze the frequency and threshold of subjects’ vigilant behaviors. The results indicated that the developed VR environment evoked a decline in subjects’ attentiveness as a result of risk habituation within a relatively short period of experiment time, and the simulated VR accidents generated a sustained effect in reducing risk habituation. The findings of this study provide the understanding of how workers’ risk habituation can be observed using VR and how a behavioral intervention in a VR environment can reduce risk habituation to repeatedly exposed workplace hazards.</p>

Dataset about discretionary damages of mental suffering in fatal car accident cases in Taiwan
<p>We use the Taiwan Judicial Yuan Law and Regulations Retrieving System to search and collect the judgments from 2006 to 2020 in Taiwan Taichung District Court, and then we delete the irrelevant judgments such as judgments against the plaintiff (without assessing the mental suffering damages). Furthermore, this dataset only focuses on the judgments with one victim and one defendant, excluding the judgments with more than one victim or defendant.</p> <p>Next, we take one plaintiff as one data unit, and we extract the legal factors from the judgments and take them as features in the dataset. Apart from the legal factors which judges considered while assessing the mental suffering damages, we add some extra features which we think important and relevant to the assessment of mental suffering dam- ages. For example, we add some features that might affect the discretionary damages, including the total number of plaintiffs who are victim’s parents in the same case, the total number of plaintiffs who are victim’s children in the same case, and the total number of plaintiffs in the same case.</p> <p>Besides, we extract the discretionary damages from the judgments and take them as the target values (𝑦 vector) in the dataset.</p> <p>Finally, there are some features in the dataset lacking the unified unit, so we need to determine the unified unit for those feature columns.</p> <p>To sum up, the dataset contains 483 observations and 34 features</p>
Data from: Multiobjective optimization algorithm for accurate MADYMO reconstruction of vehicle-pedestrian accidents
<p>Uncertainty in reconstruction accuracy is a critical problem faced in the current traffic accident reconstruction process. The purpose of this study is to explore the use of an improved optimization algorithm combined with MAthematical DYnamic MOdels (MADYMO) multibody simulations and crash data to conduct accurate reconstructions of vehicle–pedestrian accidents. The performance of three commonly employed multiobjective optimization algorithms, including nondominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II), neighbourhood cultivation genetic algorithm (NCGA) and multiobjective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) were compared and evaluated. The effects of the number of objective functions, the selection of different objective functions and the optimal number of iterations are also investigated. The present study indicated that NSGA-II had better convergence and generated more noninferior solutions and better final solutions than NCGA and MOPSO. And multibody simulations coupled with optimization algorithms can be used to accurately reconstruct vehicle-pedestrian collisions.</p>
Accident rate per year in plumbing activity in construction sector in two companies in Colombia

The dataset is a accident database labor administered by Occupational Health and Safety coordinators and it use was approved by the two companies. Cs-137 in forests ecosystems contaminated by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Accident
<p>We developed a dataset for radiocaesium (<sup>137</sup>Cs) in trees, soil, and mushrooms measured in the forests affected by the Fukushima nuclear accident. The <sup>137</sup>Cs activity concentration and inventory data reported in scientific journal papers written in English or in Japanese, governmental reports, and governmental monitoring data on the web were collated. The ancillary information describing the forest stands were also collated, and environmental information was derived from the other databases using longitude and latitude coordinates of the sampling locations.</p> <p>The database consists of three separate files: 1) a data file, which contains radioactivity and ancillary data, 2) a field-description file, which explains the contents of the data file and the units of data, and 3) a reference list file, which contains the source number and the details of the reference. Data from: Sleep apnea, sleep debt and daytime sleepiness are independently associated with road accidents: a cross-sectional study on truck drivers
Background: Recent research has found evidence of an association between motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) or near miss accidents (NMAs), and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) or its main medical cause, Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). However, EDS can also be due to non-medical factors, such as sleep debt (SD), which is common among professional truck drivers. On the opposite side, rest breaks and naps are known to protect against accidents. Study objectives: To investigate the association of OSA, SD, EDS, rest breaks and naps, with the occurrence of MVAs and NMAs in a large sample of truck drivers. Methods: 949 male truck drivers took part in a cross-sectional medical examination and were asked to complete a questionnaire about sleep and waking habits, risk factors for OSA and EDS. Results: MVAs and NMAs were reported by 34.8% and 9.2% of participants, respectively. MVAs were significantly predicted by OSA (OR= 2.32 CI95%=1.68-3.20), SD (OR=1.45 CI95%=1.29-1.63), EDS (OR=1.73 CI95%=1.15-2.61) and prevented by naps (OR=0.59 CI95%=0.44-0.79) or rest breaks (OR=0.63 CI95%=0.45-0.89). NMAs were significantly predicted by OSA (OR= 2.39 CI95%=1.47- 3.87) and SD (OR=1.49 CI95%=1.27- 1.76) and prevented by naps (OR=0.52 CI95%=0.32- 0.85) or rest breaks (OR=0.49 CI95%=0.29- 0.82). Conclusions: When OSA, SD or EDS are present, the risk of MVAs or NMAs in truck drivers is severely increased. Taking a rest break or a nap appear to be protective against accidents.
