International corporations trading Brazilian soy are keystone actors for water stewardship

Transnational corporations play a major, but poorly constrained, role in reallocating global water resources. Here, we couple high-resolution, company-specific trade data with hydrological and crop models to estimate the virtual water trade of the top 10 transnational corporations that trade Brazilian soy. We identify 4429 virtual water flows connecting 1620 Brazilian municipalities with the top-10 soy importing countries and find that the total virtual water flow increased from 43 billion m3 to 100 billion m3 between 2004 and 2018. We find that the largest soy traders displace on average twice as much virtual water as top-importing countries, excluding China. For example, in 2018 Bunge Limited exported 15 Gm3, almost tripling the Netherlands's virtual water import (the second largest importer at about 5 Gm3). Our findings highlight the importance of transnational corporations for achieving water stewardship and sustainable supply chains to support water resource security at municipal and international scales.

EnergyPROSPECTS Energy Citizenship Factsheet Series, Part 3: Actors and Organisations

This document is Part 3 of the EnergyPROSPECTS Factsheet Series. We have created the Series to publish the results of a mapping of energy citizenship in Europe, along with the first stage of our analysis of the respective data. The EnergyPROSPECTS consortium mapped 596 cases of energy citizenship between November 2020 and May 2021 using desk research, collecting data on many aspects of the cases. Although the analysis is a work in progress, we believe it is important to share our data and, through doing this, contribute to the understanding of energy citizenship in Europe.

EnergyPROSPECTS (PROactive Strategies and Policies for Energy Citizenship Transformation), a H2020 project between 2021-2024, works with a critical understanding of energy citizenship that is grounded in state-of-the-art social sciences and humanities (SSH) insights.

Dataset and code related to the publication "Aligning heat pump operation with market signals: A win-win scenario for the electricity market and its actors?"

General remarks

This dataset and code was developed and used for the publication

E. Sperber, C. Schimeczek, U. Frey, K. K. Cao, V. Bertsch: Aligning heat pump operation with market signals: A win-win scenario for the electricity market and its actors? In: Energy Reports, Volume 13, June 2025, pp. 491-513, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.egyr.2024.12.028

Data description

The dataset "heat_pump_results.zip" includes all relevant results underlying the above publication.

The data is organized according to the scenarios considered in the analysis. Therefore, each folder is labelled according to the scenario structure, starting with the building efficiency scenario ("BAU" / "EFF"), followed by the PV scenario ("no-PV" / "with-PV"), the HP operation scenario ("ModFlex_V", "ModFlex_F", "HighFlex_V"), the simulation year (2030 / 2040) and the weather year (2017 / 2019 / 2023).

Within each result directory per scenario, the data is further structured according to the results at the market level ("AMIRIS") and at the user level ("GAMS" and "INFLEX"). The "INFLEX" directory contains results for the inflexible reference operation, while the "GAMS" directory contains results for the cost-minimized heat pump operation at the level of building types. The data at the user level is further structured by location. Data is given in hourly resolution.

The scenario evaluation indicators presented in the publication, as well as other indicators, are summarized in the "MPI" directory.

Abbreviations used:

HP: heat pump

SH: space heating

DHW: domestic hot water

AW: air/water

BW: brine/water

PV: photovoltaic

Ti: indoor air temperature

Ttes: temperature of domestic hot water storage tank

Code description

The code to generate the results is given in "heat_pump_workflow.zip". Please follow the instructions in the README.md that you can find in this archive.

Conctact

Please contact Evelyn Sperber at evelyn.sperber@dlr.de if you have any questions.

Adjustable Block Analysis: Actor-based Creation of Block Summaries for Scaling Formal Verification

Software quality assurance becomes more and more popular in modern software development. Fixing bugs early, reduces the cost and increases the quality of the product. Since a great portion of time is needed for debugging, assisting techniques are integrated. Many techniques use formal verification as a basis. Although formal verification is applied with great success to many software development pipelines, the scalability is still a big challenge. In this work, we introduce the concept of the distributed CPAs (configurable program analyses). The core idea is to partition the control flow automaton (CFA) of a given input program in coherent blocks with one entry and one exit node. Workers analyze every block parallely and broadcast new information to every other worker. If a block contains an error location, the block is analyzed backwards from the error location. Whenever the analysis reaches the top of the block, we ask whether other blocks can prove the error location (un)reachable. For this, we can reuse the results of previous verification runs on other blocks. Our approach is easily extensible to support any existing configurable program analysis and additionally allows an easy integration of other concepts, e.g., fault localization. This work shows and explains the implementation of a framework for distributed CPAs in CPAchecker. Furthermore, we perform a thorough evaluation of the approach, showing that our implementation is sound and matches the results of the existing predicate analysis. However, the great amount of transferred data between workers slows down the verification process causing many out-of-memory errors and timeouts. Nonetheless, the evaluation reveals the current bottle-necks and points us to potentially useful and effective improvements.

Thesis: https://www.sosy-lab.org/research/msc/2022.Kettl.Adjustable_Block_Analysis.pdf

FEDORA. Artifacts from two study groups on inter/multi/transdisciplinary forms of knowledge organization and multi-actor contexts of knowledge construction

The dataset contains artifacts from two intensive multi-actors and inter-disciplinary study groups realized within the FEDORA project. The basic artifacts are jamboard used to collect and share experiences of interdisciplianity in terms of: barriers, features of good interdisciplinarity experiences, interdisciplinary skills, forms of knowledge organization.

The study groups involved 14 participants with diverse backgrounds (physics, chemistry, educational science, management, mathematics, philosophy, history of science, sociology, science communication). The interdisciplinary group discussions drew on the reading selected by UNIBO and experience from international projects and yielded three narratives of the barriers, conditions that facilitate interdisciplinarity, and interdisciplinary attitudes and skills to inter/multi/transdisciplinarity. The results are detailed in the deliverable D1.1 (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.7519006)
