Salt-Affected Soils in Italy

<p>Soil salinization and sodification risks are two of the main threats in agricultural soils of Italy<br> (Dazzi, 2008). In Italy they are mainly due to irrigation with saline waters (Dazzi and Lo Papa,<br> 2013), to seawater intrusion (Castrignan&ograve; et al., 2008, Dazzi and Lo Papa, 2013, Selvaggi et al.,<br> 2010), and to saline parent materials (Dazzi and Fierotti, 1994). The water level is strictly regulated<br> by channels and pumping stations (Vittori Antisari et al., 2020; Buscaroli and Zannoni, 2010;<br> Teatini et al., 2007), and seawater intrusion along rivers, canals and in the groundwater aquifer is<br> exacerbated by subsidence (Teatini et al., 2005). The salt-rich parent material can be exposed due<br> to soil erosion (Piccarreta et al., 2006; Cocco et al., 2015). In the last decades, several Italian regional<br> authorities for soil data produced soil salinity (risk) maps, resorting to different mapping<br> approaches. Previous examples of salinity risk maps of Italy have been also attempted (Dazzi, 2008,<br> Costantini et al. 2009). This works presents the maps of salt-affected soils of Italy, as part of the 1k<br> grid GSSmap, realized adopting the procedure proposed by the Global Soil Partnership (GSP), and<br> involving the Italian regional authorities, which are part of the Italian Soil Partnership.</p>

Soil phosphorus, litterfall mass, nitrogen and phosphorus in eight Puerto Rico forests affected by hurricanes Hugo, Bertha, Georges, Irma, and Maria.

Tropical cyclones are intensifying and occurring at higher latitudes in recent decades, but the mechanisms underpinning the resistance (ability to withstand disturbance-induced change) and resilience (pace of return to pre-disturbance reference values) of tropical forests to cyclones remains largely unexplored at the pantropical scale. We conducted a meta-analysis to investigate the role of soil resource availability (i.e., total soil phosphorus concentration) in mediating site-level forest canopy resistance and resilience to cyclones pan-tropically. We evaluated cyclone-induced and post-cyclone litterfall mass (g/m2/day), phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) fluxes (mg/m2/day), as well as concentrations (mg/g) across 73 case studies in Australia, Guadeloupe, Hawaii, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Taiwan (Bomfim et al., in review). This dataset includes information related to 42 case studies in eight Puerto Rico forests affected by hurricanes Hugo, Bertha, Georges, Irma, and Maria between 1989 and 2017. This dataset also includes data for the canopy trimming experiment (CTE) in El Verde. - The compiled Litterfall Mass and Nitrogen and Phosphorus Flux and Concentration data from natural forest ecosystems across Puerto Rico prior to and after eight hurricanes are provided in Forest-Soil-Litterfall-Hurricane_Puerto-Rico.csv. This data file also includes site location, geographical characteristics, elevation, soil phosphorus concentration, geology, and several variables related to each hurricane disturbance. Gravity modeling of the Alpine lithosphere affected by magmatism based on seismic tomography

<p>The Southern Alpine regions have been affected by several magmatic and volcanic events between the Paleozoic and the Tertiary. This activity has undoubtedly had an important effect on the density distribution and structural setting at lithosphere scale. Combining the information from gravity field and a high-resolution seismic tomography has been carried out a new 3D lithosphere density model of the Alpine region.</p>

NDSI values in a region affected by a forest fire

<p>This dataset includes maps with NDSI values that come from Landsat 5 Surface Reflectance collection images available in Google Eath Engine. TIFF images cropped to a region of Lanjaron where different post-fire treatments were established are presented. This area was affected by a forest fire in September 2005. That is why NDSI values and binary layers are presented for two periods, before and after the fire (hese binary layers are generated based on a threshold of 0.35). Comparisons are made in three forest management treatments after the fire. These treatments were No Intervention (NI), Partial Court (PCL) and Salvage Logging (SL).</p><p>This dataset also includes a grid with the sizes of the Landsat pixels that includes as information the treatment to which it belongs (column Trat_1).</p><p>And a folder of outputs where each cell has an associated value of ancillary variables (such as elevation, slope, shadows) and another where they present the NDSI values extracted from the images of the dataset</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

Altered loading was imposed through two mechanisms. Reduced loading involved intramuscular Botox injections in the right calf muscles to induce plantar flexor muscle paralysis [24]. Additionally, the rats in the minimal loading group received a steel-orthosis around their right hindlimb directly after surgery [24].</p> <p>Snap frozen tendons in OCT were sectioned longitudinally (7 &mu;m thickness) and stained with immunofluorescent staining for collagen 1, collagen 3, or elastin. Sections were counterstained with DAPI followed by mounting. The tissue sections were imaged under a microscope (DMi8, Leica Microsystems, Wetzlar, Germany, with a Hamamatsu Orca LT Flash sCMOS camera) where fluorescence was detected at 550 nm (secondary antibody Alexa Fluor 594), 470 nm (secondary antibody Alexa Fluor 488) and 385 nm (DAPI), and exposure time was held constant for each color channel regarding magnification and staining.</p> <p>Mapping images of the entire tendon were obtained for one section per group (n=1 per healing time, loading group and ECM matrix protein). All images were adjusted to the negative control, where the primary antibody was omitted, to correct for unspecific antibody detection.</p> <p><strong>Microscope images and description of file-names </strong></p> <p>All data is presented in the form of .tif files. Please refer to the scale bars in the images. All image-files are named using the following abbreviations, as described below. Data and script: Community size can affect the signals of ecological drift and niche selection on biodiversity

<p>Updated version of the code. Data files are the same. This is the final version of the code, associated with a manuscript published in Ecology (doi: 10.1002/ecy.3014). A preprint is also available: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/515098v1.abstract</p> <p>This is&nbsp;a unique dataset on insect communities sampled identically in a total of 200 streams in climatically highly different regions (100 in Brazil and 100 in Finland). The sampling design included 5 streams (communities) per watershed and provided us replicates of metacommunities (watersheds). Data also include information on in-stream variables (such as current velocity (m/s), depth (cm), stream width (cm), % of sand (0.25-2 mm), gravel (2-16 mm), pebble (16-64 mm), cobble (64-256 mm), and boulder (256-1024 mm), % of canopy cover by riparian vegetation, pH, conductivity, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus) and catchment level variables (such as&nbsp;average slope, % of native forest cover, pasture, agriculture, planted forests, urban areas, mining, water bodies, bare soil, secondary forest cover, and mixed land uses).</p> <p>In addition to the dataset, here we also provide and R code used to investigate the relationship between beta diversity and community size.&nbsp;This code calculates 4 types of beta-diversity metric for each of 100&nbsp;watersheds (5 streams) in Brazil and Finland.&nbsp;Beta diversity: Sorensen and Bray-Curtis dissimilarity between all&nbsp;pairs.&nbsp;Beta deviation from null models: Raup-Crick (vegan version) and&nbsp;Bray-Curtis beta-deviation (based on the scripts by Chris Catano and&nbsp;Jonathan Myers).&nbsp;These beta diversity metrics are modelled against community size,&nbsp;environmental heterogeneity and spatial extent.</p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

Data & R-Code for "Weather and food availability additively affect reproductive output in an expanding raptor population"

<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>The joint effects of interacting environmental factors on key demographic parameters can exacerbate or mitigate the separate factors&rsquo; effects on population dynamics. Given ongoing changes in climate and land use, assessing interactions between weather and food availability on reproductive performance is crucial to understand and forecast population dynamics. By conducting a feeding experiment in 4 years with different weather conditions, we were able to disentangle the effects of weather, food availability and their interactions on reproductive parameters in an expanding population of the red kite (<em>Milvus milvus</em>), a conservation-relevant raptor known to be supported by anthropogenic feeding. Brood loss occurred mainly during the incubation phase, and was associated with rainfall and low food availability. In contrast, brood loss during the nestling phase occurred mostly due to low temperatures. Survival of last-hatched nestlings and nestling development was enhanced by food supplementation and reduced by adverse weather conditions. However, we found no support for interactive effects of weather and food availability, suggesting that these factors affect reproduction of red kites additively. The results not only suggest that food-weather interactions are prevented by parental life-history trade-offs, but that food availability and weather conditions are crucial separate determinants of reproductive output, and thus population productivity. Overall, our results suggest that the observed increase in spring temperatures and enhanced anthropogenic food resources have contributed to the elevational expansion and the growth of the study population during the last decades.</p>

Data for 'Phenological shifts in a warming world affect physiology and life history in a damselfly'

<p>In this analysis we studied, in laboratory conditions, the impact of warming and hatching dates on key life history and physiological traits in a cannibalistic damselfly, <em>Ischnura</em> <em>elegans</em>. Larvae were reared in groups from hatching to emergence through one or two growth seasons, depending on the voltinism. Larvae were equally divided by hatching dates (early and late) and temperature treatment (current and warming). Early and late hatched groups were not mixed. This data set includes:</p> <ul> <li>survival until emergence and emergence success data</li> <li>development time (from hatching to emergence, in days)</li> <li>mass of adult insects</li> <li>growth rate (mass of adult insect/development time in days)</li> <li>protein content (&mu;g of protein/&mu;l of prepared homogenate)</li> <li>phenoloxidase activity (PO, value of activity curve slope)</li> <li>PO activity/protein (value of activity curve slope/(&mu;g of protein/&mu;l of prepared homogenate)</li> <li>insects voltinism (univoltine/semivoltine)</li> </ul>
