Metadata of the "Alter Realkatalog" (ARK) of Berlin State Library (SBB) Version 2 - August 2025
<p>This dataset was created with the intent to provide a single larger set of metadata from Berlin State Library for research purposes and the development of AI applications.</p> <p>The dataset comprises descriptive metadata of 2.639.554 titles derived from the union catalogue K10plus, a database with about 200 million records from libraries across 11 German states. Selected are all records that include system entries ("Systemstellen") from the historical classification of the "Alter Realkatalog" (ARK), a subject catalogue of the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Berlin State Library. They refer to publications from 1501 to 1955 and reproductions thereof. The title data contain subject headings and BK classmarks that have been transmitted onto them from the "<a href="https://ark.staatsbibliothek-berlin.de/">Historische Systematik</a>", the online representation of the ARK classification.</p>
Data from Sand aggradation alters biofilm standing crop and metabolism in a low-gradient Lake Superior tributary
We conducted a comparative study of biofilm standing crop and metabolism in the Salmon Trout River, a tributary of Lake Superior where watershed disturbances have led to 3-fold increases in streambed fine sediments, predominately sand, in the past decade. We compared biofilm standing crop and metabolism rates using light–dark chambers in reaches where substrate consisted of predominately exposed rock or sand substrates. This data archive includes rates of primary production and respiration, biomass measurements from chambers, and benthic standing crop and water chemistry data collected from the same river sites over the course of a summer. Perennial grass tiller and stolon counts in plots with experimentally altered precipitation variability at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 2012-2014
This dataset contains perennial grass tiller and stolon counts collected starting in 2012 for a long-term precipitation variability manipulation experiment at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, U.S.A. The study was designed to assess the effect of interannual variability in precipitation on average aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) in Chihuahuan Desert grasslands. The study began in 2009, has five annual precipitation treatments, and contains 50 plots (10 per treatment). This experiment uses precipitation shelters and irrigation treatments to manipulate water inputs to 2.5 x 2.5 meter plots in a desert grassland. There are high, low, and ambient (control) precipitation variability treatments. Ambient plots receive natural precipitation each year, while variability treatments alternate between 20% and 180% (high variability), or 50% and 150% (low variability) of ambient precipitation each year. Perennial grass tiller and stolon counts were made annually in each plot from 2012-2014. This is an ongoing study and the dataset will be updated as needed.

Psoriasis is associated with elevated gut IL-1α and intestinal microbiome alterations
<p>Background: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory condition that predominantly affects the skin and is associated with extracutaneous disorders, such as inflammatory bowel disease and arthritis. Changes in gut immunology and microbiota are important drivers of proinflammatory disorders and could play a role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Therefore, we explored whether psoriasis in a Central Asian cohort is associated with alterations in select immunological markers and/or microbiota of the gut. Methods: We undertook a case-control study of stool samples collected from outpatients, aged 30-45 years, of a dermatology clinic in Kazakhstan presenting with plaque, guttate or palmoplantar psoriasis (n=20), and age-sex matched subjects without psoriasis (n=20). Stool supernatant was subjected to multiplex ELISA to assess the concentration of 47 cytokines and immunoglobulins and to 16S rRNA gene sequencing to characterize microbial diversity in both psoriasis participants and controls. Results: The psoriasis group tended to have higher concentrations of most analytes in stool (29/47=61.7%) and gut IL-1α was significantly elevated (4.19-fold, p=0.007) compared to controls. Levels of gut IL-1α in the psoriasis participants remained significantly unaltered up to three months after the first sampling (p=0.430). Psoriasis was associated with alterations in gut Firmicutes, including elevated Faecalibacterium and decreased Oscillibacter and Roseburia abundance, but no association was observed between gut microbial diversity or Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratios and disease status.<br> Conclusions: Psoriasis may be associated with gut inflammation and dysbiosis. Studies are warranted to explore the use of gut microbiome-focused therapies in the management of psoriasis in this under-studied population.</p>

Code to reproduce the analyses of "Multiple stressors alter greenhouse gas concentrations in streams through local and distal processes"
<p>Streams are significant contributors of greenhouse gases (GHG) to the atmosphere, and the increasing number of stressors degrading freshwaters may exacerbate this process, posing a threat to climatic stability. However, it is unclear whether the influence of multiple stressors on GHG concentrations in streams results from increases of in-situ metabolism (i.e., local processes) or from changes in upstream and terrestrial GHG production (i.e., distal processes). Here, we hypothesize that the mechanisms controlling multiple stressor effects vary between <span>carbon dioxide (</span>CO<sub>2</sub>) and <span>methane (</span>CH<sub>4</sub>), with the latter being more influenced by changes in local stream metabolism, and the former mainly responding to distal processes. To test this hypothesis, we measured stream metabolism and the concentrations of CO<sub>2</sub> (<em>p</em>CO<sub>2</sub>) and CH<sub>4</sub> (<em>p</em>CH<sub>4</sub>) in 50 stream sites that encompass gradients of <span>nutrient enrichment, oxygen depletion, thermal stress, riparian degradation and discharge</span>. Our results indicate that these stressors had additive effects on stream metabolism and GHG concentrations, with stressor interactions explaining limited variance. Nutrient enrichment was associated with higher stream heterotrophy and <em>p</em>CO<sub>2</sub>, whereas <em>p</em>CH<sub>4</sub> increased with oxygen depletion and water temperature. Discharge was positively linked to primary production, respiration and heterotrophy but correlated negatively with <em>p</em>CO<sub>2.</sub> Our models indicate that CO<sub>2</sub>-equivalent concentrations can more than double in streams that experience high nutrient enrichment and oxygen depletion, as compared to those with oligotrophic and oxic conditions. Structural equation models revealed that the effects of nutrient enrichment and discharge on <em>p</em>CO<sub>2</sub> were related to distal processes rather than local metabolism. In contrast, <em>p</em>CH<sub>4</sub> responses to nutrient enrichment, discharge and temperature were related to both local metabolism and distal processes. Collectively, our study illustrates <span>potential climatic feedbacks resulting from freshwater degradation and </span>provides insight into the processes mediating stressor impacts on the production of GHG in streams.</p>

Metabolic alterations in Strongyloidiasis stool samples unveil potential biomarkers of infection_dataset
<p>Strongyloidiasis, a parasitosis caused by <em>Strongyloides stercoralis</em> in humans, is a very prevalent infection in tropical or subtropical areas. Gaps on public health strategies corroborates to the high global incidence of strongyloidiasis especially due to challenges involved on its diagnosis. Based on the lack of a gold-standard diagnostic tool, we aimed to present a metabolomic study for the assessment of stool metabolic alterations. Stool samples were collected from 25 patients segregated into positive for strongyloidiasis (n = 10) and negative control (n = 15) and prepared for direct injection high-resolution mass spectrometry analysis. Using metabolomics workflow, 18 metabolites were annotated increased or decreased in strongyloidiasis condition, from which a group of 5 biomarkers comprising caprylic acid, mannitol, glucose, lysophosphatidylinositol and hydroxy-dodecanoic acid demonstrated accuracy over 89% to be explored as potential markers. The observed metabolic alteration in stool samples indicates involvement of microbiota remodeling, parasite constitution, and host response during <em>S. stercoralis</em> infection.</p>

Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty Alters Humerothoracic, Scapulothoracic, and Glenohumeral Motion During Weighted Scaption
<p>This dataset contains scapula and humerus kinematics from 10 healthy subjects, and 10 subjects post-operative to reverse total shoulder arthroplasty, performing scapular plane abduction (scaption) with and without a 2.2 kg (5 lb) handheld weight. The humerus and scapula were imaged at 100 Hz using a biplane fluoroscopy system. 3D models of the humerus and scapula were constructed from each subject’s CT scan. Model-based markerless tracking ascertained the 3D position and orientation of each bone model by semi-automatically aligning digitally reconstructed radiographs against each frame of the biplane fluoroscopy recordings. The kinematics of the bones are presented relative to each subject's torso. These data are available for download to aid researchers and clinicians in characterizing non-pathologic and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty motion during scapular plane abduction with and without a 5 lb handheld weight.</p>

Root symbionts alter the volatile profile of herbivore-infested tomato plants and aid the attraction of a predator
<p>Beneficial root microbes are among the most frequently used biocontrol agents in cropping systems, since they have been shown to promote plant growth and crop yield. Moreover, they are able to enhance protection against pathogens and insect herbivores by activating plant resistance mechanisms. Plant defense responses against herbivorous insects include the induction of metabolic pathways involved in the synthesis of defense-related metabolites. These metabolites include volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which attract natural enemies of the herbivores as a form of indirect resistance. Considering that beneficial root microbes may affect direct herbivore resistance, we hypothesized that also indirect resistance may be affected. We tested this hypothesis in a study system composed of tomato, the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus <em>Rhizophagus irregularis</em>, the growth-promoting fungus <em>Trichoderma harzianum</em>, the generalist chewing herbivore <em>Spodoptera exigua </em>and the omnivorous predator<em> Macrolophus pygmaeus</em>. Using a Y-tube olfactometer we found that <em>M. pygmaeus</em> preferred plants with <em>S. exigua </em>herbivory, but microbe-inoculated plants more than non-inoculated ones. We used a targeted GC-MS approach to assess the impact of beneficial microbes on the emission of volatiles twenty-four hours after herbivory to explain the choice of <em>M. pygmaeus</em>. We observed that the volatile composition of the herbivore-infested plants differed from that of the non-infested plants, which was driven by the higher emission of green leaf volatile compounds, methyl salicylate, and several monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. Inoculation with microbes had only a marginal effect on the emission of some terpenoids in our experiment. Gene expression analysis showed that the marker genes involved in the jasmonic and salicylic acid pathways were differentially expressed in the microbe-inoculated plants after herbivory. Our results pinpoint the role of root symbionts in determining plant-microbe-insect interactions up to the third trophic level, and elucidates their potential to be used in plant protection.</p>

Data from: Male long-distance migrant turned sedentary; The West European pond bat (Myotis dasycneme) alters their migration and hibernation behaviour
<p>Winter survey data, temperature data and mark recapture data of <em>Myotis dasycneme</em>. This study aimed to better understand the migration, mating and hibernation choices of the pond bat.</p> <p> </p> <p>The study area covered the whole of the Netherlands, Belgium and East Frisia (northwest Germany). We defined two study periods, data collected between 1930 and 1980 (Sluiter and van Heerdt) and data between 1980 and 2015 (Haarsma). All available mark and recovery data (ringing) of both the historical and recent migration research were digitized. Observations include location and date of capture, species, sex and ring number. The latest observations in the recent dataset (Haarsma) also include biometric measurements (forearm length, body mass) and information about age and reproductive status. These biometric measurements show that male pond bats are on average smaller and lighter than females (body mass (g)/ forearm length (mm) females: 18.9/47.1, males: 16.4/46.4). The dataset shows changes in the fat mass of both sexes during a year.</p> <p>This study also compares migration data with winter monitoring survey data. We selected winter roosts with three or more records of three or more pond bats in one or both of the study periods. Only data from sites with long-term data series (from the hibernacula in the Dutch provinces of Zuid-Holland, Gelderland and Limburg) were used to analyse trends and annual abundance. Our selection included 59 limestone mines in the province of Limburg and 16 WOII bunkers in Gelderland and 38 in Zuid-Holland. Data Set for "Alteration's control on frictional behavior and the depth of the ductile shear zone in geothermal reservoirs in volcanic arcs" I: Lesser Antilles Volcanic Arc
<p>Data set for the 48 friction experiments performed for gouge samples (altered andesitic rocks) from the Lesser Antilles used in the manuscript, "Alteration's control on frictional behavior and the depth of the ductile shear zone in geothermal reservoirs in volcanic arcs". This data set can be used in combination with the data set for the Cascades used in the same manuscript (doi:10.5281/zenodo.10964936). This large combined data set (of 108 frictional experiments) represents a unique opportunity to systematically study frictional behaviour in the framework of rate and state. All samples are tested in wet and dry conditions at 10, 30, and 50 MPa with velocity steps and slide-hold-slides. These two data sets have the further advantage of being performed with exactly the same protocol (same run in, same initial gouge thickness, same velocity steps, same hold periods), in the same machine, by the same operator (or by an operator who was trained and supervised by the original operator). </p>
