Dynamic landscapes of fear and safety alter prey refuge use in freshwater habitats

The non-consumptive effects of predators on prey behavior have been studied in many different systems. However, predator-prey ecology has placed a bulk of emphasis on how fear alters prey behavior, and new studies have begun to shift focus to the importance that safety in the form of refuges has in structuring prey behavioral responses. This project focuses on changes in the safety landscape as well as changes in the fear landscape and how these changes impact crayfish behavior. Using an established bass-crayfish predator prey system, we altered shelter quality and location in relation to the presence of bass odor signals. We measured shelter use by the crayfish in response to this changing landscape.

Altering pH changes competition dynamics between two crayfish species for both food and shelter resources

As climate change continues, alterations in abiotic variables within habitats will also change. One of the key variables for aquatic systems is pH. We were interested in how lowered pH altered the behavioral characteristics of two keystone species: Faxonius rusticus, a non-native crayfish in the upper midwest and Faxonius virilis, the native crayfish. We dosed size-matched individuals in separate tanks for four days and than placed these individuals in a flow through mesocosm to allow them to compete over food and shelter resources. Behavior was recorded from midnight to 4 am. Pairs of animals were exposed to pH levels varying from ambient (8.4) to 6.4. The experiment took place at the University of Michigan's Biological Station in northern Michigan in the United States.

Soil water content measurements and rainfall data for plots with experimentally altered precipitation and nutrient inputs at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 2011-ongoing

This dataset contains soil volumetric water content data collected starting in 2011 for a long-term precipitation and nutrient manipulation experiment at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, U.S.A. This experiment uses precipitation shelters and irrigation treatments to manipulate water inputs, and fertilization treatments to alter nitrogen input to 2.5 x 2.5 meter plots in a desert grassland. Soil sensors are installed at surface and deep soil layers in each plot and collect hourly averages of volumetric water content using a time-domain reflectometry method. This dataset contains daily averages. This is an ongoing study and the dataset will be updated yearly.

Fertilization (NPK) alter dryland biogeochemical processes

Nutrient augmentation is one major global change disturbance that could have cascading effects on local plant and microbial communities thus altering biogeochemical properties (Peñuelas et al. 2012). While many studies have investigated fertilization effects on community change and ecosystem processes, less work has been done in dryland ecosystems (Schimel 2010), where nutrient availability often comes as pulses correlated with rain events (Collins et al. 2008). We leveraged an ongoing fertilization experiment (NutNet) at the Sevilleta to answer the question: How does fertilization alter dryland biogeochemical processes, and how does this effect change seasonally? To explore this topic, we specifically measure three important soil hydrolase enzymes, N-acetyl- glycosaminidase (NAG), phosphatase (AP), and β- glucosidase (BG), microbial biomass, and soil nitrogen levels at 5 points along a seasonal gradient within the NutNet plots.

This data was used for analyses in publication. Each row is a plot, each column is a speceis or plot descriptor, values for columns 5 and higher are species abundances. Data was collected July-August 2021 by Anna Wassel in Missouri, USA.&nbsp;</p> <p>The file <strong>understory_species_list2021.csv&nbsp;</strong>contains a list of the species codes used in the first file with their scientific names and their status as herbs or woody. This dataset contains cover and biomass data collected starting in 2012 for a long-term precipitation variability manipulation experiment at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, U.S.A. The study was designed to assess the effect of interannual variability in precipitation on average aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) in Chihuahuan Desert grasslands. The study began in 2009, has five annual precipitation treatments, and contains 50 plots (10 per treatment). This experiment uses precipitation shelters and irrigation treatments to manipulate water inputs to 2.5 x 2.5 meter plots in a desert grassland. There are high, low, and ambient (control) precipitation variability treatments. Ambient plots receive natural precipitation each year, while variability treatments alternate between 20% and 180% (high variability), or 50% and 150% (low variability) of ambient precipitation each year. Plant cover measurements are made annually in each plot, from which biomass or net primary production are derived. This is an ongoing study and the dataset will be updated yearly.

This dataset contains soil moisture data from a study at the Jornada Experimental Range (JER) in southern New Mexico. The study was designed to assess the effect of interannual variability in precipitation on average aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) in Chihuahuan Desert grasslands. The study began in 2009 and has five precipitation treatments (see Methods). While the study began in 2009, contains 50 plots (10 per treatment) and is ongoing, these data have only been collected since July 2011 in a subset of 20 plots (4 per treatment). This dataset is intended to provide information about the amount of water in surface and deep soil layers, as well as verify that experimental precipitation manipulations are effective. This is an ongoing dataset that will be updated yearly.

Belowground responses to altered precipitation regimes in two semi-arid grasslands

Predicted climate change extremes, such as severe and prolonged drought, may profoundly impact biogeochemical processes like carbon and nitrogen cycling in water-limited ecosystems. To increase our understanding of how extreme climate events impact belowground ecosystem processes, we investigated the effects of five years of severe growing season drought and two-month delay in monsoon precipitation on belowground productivity and biogeochemical processes in two semi-arid grasslands. This experiment takes place during the fifth year of the Extreme Drought in Grassland Experiment (EDGE) at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (SNWR), a Long-Term Ecological Research in central New Mexico, USA. The two grassland sites a Chihuahuan Desert grassland dominated by Bouteloua eriopoda and Great Plains grassland dominated by B. gracilis are ~5km apart in the SWNR. The EDGE platform was established in the spring of 2012 (pre-treatment). Each site contains three treatments (ten replicates): ambient rainfall, extreme growing season drought, and delayed monsoon. The extreme drought treatment reduces growing season rainfall (April through September) each year by 66%, which equates to a 50% reduction of annual precipitation while maintaining natural precipitation patterns. There are 10 replicates per treatment within each site. All plots are 3 x 4 m in size and are paired spatially into blocks with treatments assigned randomly within a block. We measured an array of belowground and biogeochemical variables. Each variable was measured either once, twice, or three times (specific information on sampling scheme for each measured variable in methods section). Belowground net primary productivity, standing crop root biomass, total organic carbon, and total nitrogen were measured once. Extractable organic carbon, extractable total nitrogen, microbial biomass carbon, microbial biomass nitrogen and extracellular enzymes were measured twice. Nitrogen addition alters plant competition directly more than indirectly through soil microbes.

Eutrophication, the excessive addition of nutrients to ecosystems, is a pervasive component of global environmental change that can alter community dynamics. Although nitrogen addition experiments have widely documented important declines in plant diversity and shifts in plant species composition, the underlying causes of these outcomes are widely debated. Nitrogen inputs may directly affect plant competition for light or soil water or may influence plant species indirectly by altering the composition of soil microbes. In a 28-year field nitrogen addition experiment, we tested whether nitrogen-induced changes to soil microbes could indirectly alter the outcome of competition between codominant foundation plant species. In the field, long-term addition of inorganic nitrogen slowed the competitive take-over of blue grama grass (Bouteloua gracilis) by black grama grass (B. eriopoda) and thereby stabilized the ecotone between two grassland ecosystems in central New Mexico, USA.

PMU measurements altered by wireless communication such as 3G, 4G, 5G

<p><span>Dataset which shows the effect of three types of wireless communication (e.g., 3G, 4G, and 5G, respectively) on data integrity of two real Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) measurements which are sent to a virtual Phasor Data Concentrator (vPDC) for timestamp synchronization function.&nbsp; Each file contains the values of the two real PMUs installed at each end of a high voltage (HV) transmission line located in a transmission power grid in South Europe. The datasets were collected using an advanced Power-Hardware In the Loop (P-HIL) setup, including in the communication loop between the PMUs and the vPDC a hardware network emulator. The later had the role to realistically emulate the macroscopic behavior of the communication delays and packet data loss of the three wireless communication networks. The delays and data packet loss were imposed only at one of the two PMUs (PMU Lab1) considering a power grid system running in balanced operation conditions. Therefore, only phase A was recorded in the data, and the reason why the current values from phase B and phase C are almost zero.&nbsp;</span></p>

Marine plastics alter the organic matter composition of the air-sea boundary layer, with influences on CO2 exchange: a large-scale analysis method to explore future ocean scenarios

<p>Microplastics are substrates for microbial activity and can influence biomass production. This has potentially important implications in the sea-surface microlayer, the marine boundary layer that controls gas exchange with the atmosphere and where biologically produced organic compounds can accumulate. In the present study, we used six large scale mesocosms to simulate future ocean scenarios of high plastic concentration. Each mesocosm was filled with 3 m3&nbsp;of seawater from the oligotrophic Sea of Crete, in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. A known amount of standard polystyrene microbeads of 30 &mu;m diameter was added to three replicate mesocosms, while maintaining the remaining three as plastic-free controls. Over the course of a 12-day experiment, we explored microbial organic matter dynamics in the sea-surface microlayer in the presence and absence of microplastic contamination of the underlying water. Our study shows that microplastics increased both biomass production and enrichment of carbohydrate-like and proteinaceous marine gel compounds in the sea-surface microlayer. Importantly, this resulted in a 3 % reduction in the concentration of dissolved CO2&nbsp;in the underlying water. This reduction was associated to both direct and indirect impacts of microplastic pollution on the uptake of CO2&nbsp;within the marine carbon cycle, by modifying the biogenic composition of the sea&#39;s boundary layer with the atmosphere.</p>

Dietary fibers boost gut microbiome-produced B vitamin pool and alter host immune landscape

<p>This dataset contains fcs files of lymphocytes from the colonic lamina propria, lungs, and spleens of specific-pathogen-free (SPF), gnotobiotic (14-member synthetic microbiota, 14SM) or germ-free (GF) mice fed five distinct rodent diets (Standard chow 1, SC1; Standard chow 2, SC2; Fiber-supplemented diet, FS; Inulin-supplemented diet, IN; or Fiber-free diet, FF), analysed by mass cytometry. Three million cells per organ per animal were transferred into 15 mL conical tubes. For live/dead staining, cells were incubated with 5 &mu;M cisplatin for 5 minutes. Cells were washed, and cell surface staining mix was added containing pre-conjugated antibodies for 30 minutes at room temperature. Samples were washed twice with FACS buffer, then fixed using the FoxP3 Fix/Perm kit (eBiosciences) for 45 minutes at 4&deg;C, followed by permeabilization wash. Samples were then incubated with the intracellular staining mix for 30 minutes at room temperature. Cells were washed with FACS buffer twice, and pellets were resuspended in Cell-ID&trade; Intercalator-Ir (Fluidigm) in MaxPar fixation solution (Fluidigm, catalogue no. 201192B) and refrigerated overnight, or for up to five days. Prior to acquisition, samples were washed twice with 1X PBS, and then washed twice with deionized water. Cell pellets were further resuspended in deionized water at 0.5 &times; 10^6 cells/mL and topped up with 10% calibration beads (EQ Four Element Calibration Beads, Fluidigm). All samples were acquired on the Helios Mass Cytometer (Fluidigm). Effector immune populations and activated T cells in the gut accumulate in a microbiota-dependent manner. Shifts in the microbiome according to dietary fiber source and content result in altered concentrations of B vitamins available to the host, which is tied to distinct alterations in innate and adaptive immune populations.&nbsp;</p>
