Data from: Brief in-hospital cognitive screening detects dementia and anticipates complex admissions

<p><strong>Objective</strong>: With the goal of improving community health by screening for dementia, we tested the utility of integrating the Six-Item Screener (SIS) into our emergency room neurology consultations.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>: In this cross-sectional observational study, we measured SIS performance within 24 hours of hospital arrival in one hundred consecutive English-speaking patients aged ≥ 45 years. Performance was compared to patient age, previously-charted cognitive impairment, and proxies for in-hospital complexity: whether or not a patient was admitted to the hospital and the number of medical studies ordered.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: Those with poor SIS performance were older (<em>p</em> = 0.02), more likely to have previously-charted cognitive impairment (<em>p</em> &lt; 0.01; sensitivity 86%, specificity 77%). Poor performers were more likely to be admitted to the hospital (<em>p</em> = 0.04; odds ratio = 3.6) and were subjected to more tests once admitted (<em>p</em> &lt; 0.01). These findings persisted after accounting for age and history of cognitive impairment.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions</strong>: Poor performance on the SIS was associated with previously charted cognitive impairment, justifying future study of its ability to detect unrecognized dementia cases. Until then, its ability to inexpensively anticipate medically complex hospital admissions motivates broader emergency department use of the SIS.</p>

Data from: Anticipating arrival: tackling the national challenges associated with the redistribution of biodiversity driven by climate change

1. The redistribution of species in response to climate change is expected to significantly challenge environmental management and conservation efforts around the globe. To date, we have had restricted understanding of the benefits and risks that species redistribution may pose to individual countries, and a limited appreciation of the variability in current opportunities for developing effective monitoring approaches that build on existing national frameworks. 2. To assess the present level of ecological, economical and societal risks and opportunities associated with new arrivals driven by changes in climatic conditions, we conducted a review of the available information on climate driven changes in animal species (both terrestrial and marine) composition and distribution in the United Kingdom over the past ten years (2008-2018). 3. We found evidence that at least 55 species have colonised new locations in the country due to climate change in past decade, with 22 of them suspected to impact positively or negatively the receiving ecosystems and/or nearby human communities. Ten of these 55 species were identified thanks to social media. 4. Synthesis and applications. Our work identifies pressing monitoring gaps relevant to the management of species on the move and discusses the potential for social media to help address current information needs. It also calls for more theoretical work to enable the quick identification of species likely to be problematic (or beneficial) and locations likely to experience significant ecological and societal impacts from biodiversity's redistribution under a changing climate.

Consumption of red maple in anticipation of beech mast-seeding drives reproduction in Eastern chipmunks

1. Understanding the determinants of reproduction is a central question in evolutionary ecology. In pulsed resources environments, the reproduction and population dynamics of seed consumers is driven by pulsed production of seeds by trees, or mast-seeding. In Southern Québec, eastern chipmunks (Tamias striatus) exclusively reproduce during the summer before and the spring after a mast-seeding event of American beech. They thus seem to anticipate beech mast by reproducing during early summer, so that juveniles can emerge at the time of maximum beechnut abundance during late summer. 2. However, the cues allowing chipmunks to anticipate beech mast remain unknown, and the existence of the anticipation process itself has been questioned. To tackle those issues, we investigated the links between the nutritional ecology and reproduction of adult chipmunks and compared their spring diet in mast- vs post-mast years. 3. We monitored female's reproductive status (N=446), analyzed cheek pouch contents at capture (n=3761 captures), and recorded seed production by deciduous trees on three different sites in Mont-Sutton from 2006 to 2018. 4. Results revealed a systematic shift in chipmunk diet towards red maple seeds in springs preceding a beech mast, with red maple seeds composing more than 77% of chipmunk diet. However, red maple consumption was unrelated to red maple production, but was related to beech seed production in the upcoming fall. We also found that red maple consumption best predicted the proportion of females in summer estrus. 5. Our results confirm that chipmunks anticipate beech mast-seeding and suggest a key role of red maple consumption in that anticipation. Results also suggest that red maple seeds may contain nutrients or secondary-plant components essential to sustain or trigger the summer reproduction in chipmunks, which allow them to remain synchronized with pulsed productions of both red maple and beech and improve their fitness. 08-Jan-2020

Replication data and R script for 'Anticipated administrative burdens: How proximity to upcoming compulsory meetings affect welfare recipients' experiences of administrative burden'

<p>Administrative burden research claims that target group members are likely to experience learning, compliance, and psychological costs when interacting with government programs. We argue that the mere anticipation of such interactions may translate into experiences of administrative burden. Utilizing a large-scale dataset with responses from 2,276 Danish social benefit recipients, we estimate how proximity to upcoming compulsory meetings with street-level bureaucrats &ndash; a common condition in means-tested benefit programs &ndash; affect the recipients&rsquo; experiences of burdens. We find that the shorter the time to future meetings, the more benefit recipients experience stress and stigma, but the less they experience learning costs. The findings suggest that welfare recipient experiences of burden are likely to fluctuate over time and that psychological costs increase as recipients have to make mental and practical preparations for complying with government demands.</p>

Data for: Southern Europe is becoming climatically favourable for African birds: anticipating the establishment of a new species

<p><span><strong>Background</strong>:</span><span> The current modification of species distribution ranges, as a response to a warmer climate, constitutes an interesting line of work and a recent challenge for biogeography. This study aimed to determine if the climatic conditions of southern Europe are adequate to host a typical African species, the House Bunting, which is registered regularly during the last years, still in low numbers. To this end, the distribution of the species in its native range was modelled, both in the present and in future climate scenarios, using its current breeding distribution areas and a set of environmental variables. </span></p> <p><span><strong>Results</strong>:</span><span> The results showed that the southern half of the Iberian Peninsula exhibits high values of favourability to host this African species for the current climatic conditions. Furthermore, future forecasts indicated an increase in favourability for this area. The highly favourable areas we detected in the south of the Iberian Peninsula are already regularly receiving individuals of the species. These observations are very likely vagrant birds dispersing from recently colonised breeding areas in northern Morocco, which may indicate a continuous process of colonisation towards the north, as has occurred during the last decades in Northern Africa. </span></p> <p><span><strong>Conclusions</strong>:</span><span> We cannot anticipate when the House Bunting will establish on the European continent because colonisation processes are usually slow but, according to our results, we predict its establishment in the near future. We have also identified those areas hosting favourable conditions for the species in Europe. These areas are a potential focal point for the colonisation of this and other African birds if the climate continues to warm.</span></p>
