Raw Data for Unpublished Study "Physiologically Induced State Anxiety Reduces Perceived Heat Pain in Healthy Subjects"

<p>Version hyper_v01_20231019</p><p>Authors: Alexandros Guekos, Madeleine Hau, Sabina Grob, Gil Sharvit, Petra Schweinhardt</p><p>The present data was collected from February 2022 to May 2023 for a study on the influence of hypercapnia on pain perception.</p><p>The results are to be published soon. A link to the manuscript will be provided.</p><p>Full details of the paradigm, the experimental setup, and the analysis will be given there. Therefore, the following description only summarizes the most important steps.</p><p>In total, 47 subjects (22 men and 25 women) participated in a single experimental session during which they inhaled two different air mixtures, one coresponding to regular room air (normocapnic air, 21% O2 and 0.04 CO2) and one with identical O2 concentration (21%) but 7.5% CO2 concentration (hypercapnic air) for about 13 minutes each. Starting condition, i.e. first mixture, was pseudorandomized across participants.</p><p>Each condition began with a task-free phase of 90s. Then, self-assessment manikin (SAM) ratings for valence and arousal had to be entered (10s) before the first heat stimulus. SAM ratings were prompted again in the middle of the condition, i.e. during the ninth interstimulus interval, and after rating the last, i.e. 18th stimulus. After the last stimulus, the body sensations questionnaire (BSQ) had to be filled in (60s). After a further 60s of task-free time the air mixture was switched and the entire procedure was repeated for the second condition.</p><p>Instructions for SAM were given before the start of the experiment (see SAM_instructions_final.pdf).</p><p>BSQ was obtained before the experiment as well (see paper version BSQ_new.pdf).</p><p>During inhalation participants received 18 painful heat stimuli of 6s each on three locations on the calf muscle. The stimuli were divided into low (6x), medium (6x), and high (6x). Stimulus temperature was determined based on the individual heat pain tolerance threshold (ToT), corresponding to roughly 95, 96.5, 98% ToT. ToT was determined as a mean of three method of limits beforehand.</p><p>Participants had to rate every stimulus on two scales, one for intensity and one for unpleasantness. The intensity scale ranged from 0 (no sensation) to 200 (maximum tolerable pain) with 100 being the individual pain threshold (HPT). The unpleasantness scale ranged from -100 (extremely unpleasant) to 100 (extremely pleasant) with 0 corresponding to neutral.</p><p>Both scales were presented as horizontal bars with anchors for the lowest, highest, quarter-, and mid-point values. Ratings had to be filled in using a mouse-controlled slider on the two scales displayed on the screen (see Ratings.png). The whole protocol was programmed and displayed with PsychoPy v3.2021.2.3 (Open Science Tools Ltd, Nottingham, UK). The total duration of each condition was approximately 13 minutes (778s).</p><p>During the whole experiment, physiological data was recorded. This included galvanic skin response from the toes (electrodes on biggest and middle toes, in muS), heart rate (three point measurement, in bpm), as well as exhaled O2 and C02 concentration (in %). Heart beat and end-tidal were directly calculated from the registered data during recording and saved with the data.</p><p>The study was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation as part of a grant to PS (grant number 320030_179191/1).</p>

Data for: Psychological distress, anxiety, suicidality, and wellbeing in New Zealand during the COVID-19 lockdown: a cross-sectional study

<p>Dataset for following paper.</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>New Zealand's early response to the novel coronavirus pandemic included a strict lockdown which eliminated community transmission of COVID-19. However, this success was not without cost, both economic and social.  In our study, we examined the psychological wellbeing of New Zealanders during the COVID-19 lockdown when restrictions reduced social contact, limited recreation opportunities, and resulted in job losses and financial insecurity.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We conducted an online panel survey of a demographically representative sample of 2010 adult New Zealanders. The survey contained three standardised measures – the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10), the GAD-7, and the Well-Being Index (WHO-5) – as well as questions designed specifically to measure family violence, suicidal ideation, and alcohol consumption. It also included items assessing positive aspects of the lockdown.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Thirty percent of respondents reported moderate to severe psychological distress (K10), 16% moderate to high levels of anxiety, and 39% low wellbeing; well above baseline measures. Poorer outcomes were seen among young people and those who had lost jobs or had less work, those with poor health status, and who had past diagnoses of mental illness. Suicidal ideation was reported by 6%, with 2% reporting making plans for suicide and 2% reporting suicide attempts. Suicidality was highest in those aged 18–34. Just under 10% of participants had directly experienced some form of family harm over the lockdown period. However, not all consequences of the lockdown were negative, with 64% reporting 'silver linings', which included enjoying working from home, spending more time with family, and a quieter, less polluted environment.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>New Zealand's lockdown successfully eliminated COVID-19 from the community, but our results show this achievement brought a significant psychological toll. Although much of the debate about lockdown measures has focused on their economic effects, our findings emphasise the need to pay equal attention to their effects on psychological wellbeing.</p>

Black American women's attitudes toward seeking mental health services and use of mobile technology to support the management of anxiety

<p><strong>Objective</strong>: This study aimed to understand Black American women's attitudes toward seeking mental health services and using mobile technology to receive support for managing anxiety.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>: A self-administered web-based questionnaire was launched in October 2019 and closed in January 2020. Women who identify as Black/African American were eligible to participate. The survey consisted of approximately 70 questions and covered topics such as attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help, acceptability of using a mobile phone to receive mental health care, and screening for anxiety.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: The findings of the study (N=395) showed that younger Black women were more likely to have greater severity of anxiety than their older counterparts. Respondents were most comfortable with the use of a voice call or video call to communicate with a professional to receive support to manage anxiety in comparison to text messaging or mobile app. Younger age, higher income, and greater scores for psychological openness and help-seeking propensity increased the odds of indicating agreement with using mobile technology to communicate with a professional. Black women in the South region of the U.S. had twice the odds of agreeing to the use of mobile apps than women in the Midwest and Northeast regions.</p> <p><strong>Discussion</strong>:  Black American women, in general, have favorable views toward the use of mobile technology to receive support to manage anxiety.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion</strong>: Preferences and cultural appropriateness of resources should be assessed on an individual basis to increase the likelihood of adoption of and engagement with digital mental health interventions for management of anxiety. </p>

HypnoChild: A prospective randomized trial to reduce perioperative anxiety and postoperative discomfort in children using a hypnosis intervention before tonsillotomy and adenoidectomy

<p><strong>Introduction</strong>: Children undergoing tonsillotomy (TT) or adenoidectomy (AT) often suffer from anxiety before and pain or nausea after the procedure. Greater preoperative anxiety in children and their parents is associated with increased postoperative discomfort. The aim of the HypnoChild study is to reduce perioperative anxiety with a preoperative hypnosis intervention and thereby alleviate postoperative discomfort.</p><p><strong>Material/Methods</strong>: In a previous pilot study, we developed a narcosis comic with a little monkey as the protagonist to reduce children's preoperative anxiety. In HypnoChild, we investigated whether a hypnosis audio intervention further reduces children's perioperative anxiety. Here, the little monkey describes the surgery as an adventurous space journey. We included children 3-6 years old receiving TT or AT. 34 children prepared for surgery with the hypnosis audio intervention in addition to the comic (comic+hypnosis group), while 30 children received the comic only (comic group). All children received premedication by midazolam. We measured children's subjective well-being before and after surgery, parents' anxiety before surgery, children's anxiety during surgery, and children's postoperative pain and nausea.</p><p><strong>Results</strong>: Children showed high well-being before and after surgery in both groups. Parents' anxiety was on a moderate level in both groups. Children's anxiety was low to moderate in both groups during surgery. In the postoperative telephone interviews, children reported medium pain ratings in both groups with no significant differences in any postoperative outcome between groups.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong>: Our study shows that all children participating in our study reported high well-being and low anxiety undergoing TT or AT. We conclude that apparently children already received adequate preoperative treatment by routine care. In future studies, it should be assessed if the combination of non-medical interventions like comic and hypnosis shows an additive effect in non-medicated children.</p><p>This research was funded by a DFG grant to Dr. Barbara Schmidt, SCHM 3129/5-1</p>

Leveraging interindividual variability in threat conditioning of inbred mice to model trait anxiety

<p><strong>Abstact</strong></p> <p>Trait anxiety is a major risk factor for stress-induced and anxiety disorders in humans. However, animal models accounting for the inter-individual variability in stress vulnerability are largely lacking. Moreover, the pervasive bias of using mostly male animals in preclinical studies poorly reflects the increased prevalence of psychiatric disorders in women. Using the threat imminence continuum theory, we designed and validated an auditory aversive conditioning-based pipeline in both female and male mice. We operationalized trait anxiety by harnessing the naturally occurring variability of defensive freezing responses combined with a model-based clustering strategy. While sustained freezing during prolonged retrieval sessions was identified as an anxiety-endophenotype biomarker in both sexes, females were consistently associated with an increased freezing response. RNA-sequencing of CeA, BLA, ACC and BNST revealed massive differences in phasic and sustained responders&rsquo; transcriptomes, correlating with transcriptomic signatures of psychiatric disorders, particularly PTSD. Moreover, we detected significant alterations in the excitation/inhibition balance of principal neurons in the lateral amygdala. Burnout and anxiety levels in Human Medicine teachers, COVID-19 context

<p><strong>Introduction: </strong>In the COVID-19 context, university teachers have had to face the most complex educational demands, psychosocial risks, and the anxiety of responding to limitations in terms of connectivity and fulfillment of academic objectives<strong>. Objective:</strong> To identify the levels of burnout and anxiety in the COVID-19 context and determine how these levels are manifested in the participating teachers.&nbsp;<strong>Methodology</strong>: Analytical-type study; non-experimental, cross-sectional design. The population was 150 teachers of the Human Medicine Program of the University of San Mart&iacute;n de Porres, Chiclayo, Peru; sample: 66 teachers. The survey consisted of three sections: 1. Informed consent, 2. Maslach&#39;s Burnout Inventory, 3. Beck&#39;s Anxiety Inventory. Data processing was performed using the SPSS V.27 statistical software. All citations and bibliographical references were processed using Mendeley Desktop 1.19.8.&nbsp;<strong>Results:</strong> in the variable burnout syndrome, 25% of the participants are in the high level downwards; they present anxiety in 30.30% of the total. It was found that 50% of teachers presented mild to moderate anxiety.&nbsp;<strong>Conclusions:</strong> the largest number of teachers surveyed present anxiety due to burnout syndrome in the COVID-19 context. Finally, it is found that there is a correlation between anxiety and the sociodemographic variables sex, age, and marital status.</p>

Patient-reported outcomes via electronic health record portal vs. telephone: process and retention data in a pilot trial of anxiety or depression symptoms in epilepsy

<p>Objective: To close gaps between research and clinical practice, tools are needed for efficient pragmatic trial recruitment and patient-reported outcome(PROM) collection. The objective was to assess feasibility and process measures for patient-reported outcome collection in a randomized trial comparing electronic health record(EHR) patient portal questionnaires to telephone interview among adults with epilepsy and anxiety or depression symptoms.</p> <p>Results: Participants were 60% women, 77% White/non-Hispanic, with mean age 42.5 years. Among 15 individuals randomized to EHR portal, 10(67%, CI 41.7-84.8%) met the 6-month retention endpoint, versus 100%(CI 79.6-100%) in the telephone group(p=0.04). EHR outcome collection at 6 months required 11.8 minutes less research staff time per participant than telephone (5.9, CI 3.3-7.7 vs. 17.7, CI 14.1-20.2). Subsequent telephone contact after unsuccessful EHR attempts enabled near complete data collection and still saved staff time.</p> <p>Discussion: Data from this randomized pilot study of pragmatic outcome collection methods for patients with anxiety or depression symptoms in epilepsy includes baseline participant characteristics, recruitment flow resulting from a novel EHR-based, care-embedded recruitment process, and data on retention along with various process measures at 6-months.</p>

Mpox Narrative on Instagram: A Labeled Multilingual Dataset of Instagram Posts on Mpox for Sentiment, Hate Speech, and Anxiety Analysis

During recent virus outbreaks, social media platforms have played a crucial role in keeping the global population informed and updated regarding various aspects of the outbreaks. As a result, in the last few years, researchers from different disciplines have focused on the development of social media datasets focusing on different virus outbreaks. No prior work in this field has focused on the development of a dataset of Instagram posts about the mpox outbreak. The work presented in this paper (stated above) aims to address this research gap. It presents this <strong>multilingual dataset of</strong>&nbsp;<strong>60,127 Instagram posts</strong> about mpox, published between <strong>July 23, 2022, and September 5, 2024</strong>. This dataset contains Instagram posts about mpox in <strong>52 languages</strong>. For each of these posts, the Post ID, Post Description, Date of publication, language, and translated version of the post (translation to English was performed using the Google Translate API) are presented as separate attributes in the dataset.</p> <p>After developing this dataset, sentiment analysis, hate speech detection, and anxiety or stress detection were also performed.
