Plant and root biomass, nitrogen, carbon, and phosphorus concentrations in a mesic acidic tussock tundra experimental site established in 1981(MAT81) and harvested in 2015, Arctic LTER, Toolik Lake, Alaska.

Plant and root biomass, nitrogen, carbon, and phosphorus were measured in 2015 in the Arctic LTER tussock tundra experimental site (MAT81). This site was established in 1981 and has been harvested in previous years (see Shaver and Chapin Ecological Monographs, 61(1), 1991, pp.1-31, https://doi.org/10.2307/1942997). Data tables include the biomass for each harvested quadrat and block summaries for percent carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus for control and fertilized plots from the original 4-block design. New control plots, established in 2015, are in a separate data table and include biomass, percent carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus for each quadrat.

Zooplankton density for all samples collected from Toolik Lake and lakes near the Toolik Field Station, Arctic LTER 2003 - 2017 (Reformatted to a Darwin Core Archive)

This data package is formatted as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A, event core). For more information on Darwin Core see https://www.tdwg.org/standards/dwc/. This Level 2 data package was derived from the Level 1 data package found here: https://pasta.lternet.edu/package/metadata/eml/edi/262/2, which was derived from the Level 0 data package found here: https://pasta.lternet.edu/package/metadata/eml/knb-lter-arc/10272/5. The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: Zooplankton density, were taken with a 30 cm diameter plankton net with 156 um mesh plankton netting, for all samples collected from Toolik Lake and lakes near the Toolik Field Station, Arctic LTER from 2003 - 2017. The Arctic is one of the most rapidly warming regions on Earth. Responses to this warming involve acceleration of processes common to other ecosystems around the world (e.g., shifts in plant community composition) and changes to processes unique to the Arctic (e.g., carbon loss from permafrost thaw). The objectives of the Arctic Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Project for 2017-2023 are to use the concepts of biogeochemical and community “openness” and “connectivity” to understand the responses of arctic terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems to climate change and disturbance. These objectives will be met through continued long-term monitoring of changes in undisturbed terrestrial, stream, and lake ecosystems in the vicinity of Toolik Lake, Alaska, observations of the recovery of these ecosystems from natural and imposed disturbances, maintenance of existing long-term experiments, and initiation of new experimental manipulations. Based on these data, carbon and nutrient budgets and indices of species composition will be compiled for each component of the arctic landscape to compare the biogeochemistry and community dynamics of each ecosystem in relation to their responses to climate change and disturbance and to the propagation of those responses ac

Meteorological data collected on Toolik Lake during the ice free season for 2010-2012, Arctic LTER, Toolik Research Station, Alaska

File describing the metological conditions on Toolik Lake (named the Toolik Lake Climate station), adjacent to the Toolik Field Research Station (68 38'N, 149 36'W). This is a floating climate station and should not be confused with the Toolik Field Station Climate site (TFS Climate Station or Met Station) which is a terrestrial station (located on land). Note that this land station has been called the "Toolik Main Climate Station", and the station on the lake is located where the main lake sampling site is located so it has also been called the Toolik Lake Main Climate Station. Measurements include air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, and radiation.

Whole-lake metabolism in arctic-alpine lakes

<p>This dataset contains daily and seasonal averages of whole-lake metabolism in 43 arctic-alpine Swedish lakes, as well as meteorological and lake physical conditions. Metabolism was estimated based on the free-water dissolved oxygen (DO) method following the maximum likelihood estimation approach by Solomon et al. (2013, <em>Limnology &amp; Oceanography</em>) and using scripts by Windslow et al. 2016 (<em>Inland Waters</em>; R package LakeMetabolizer). The dataset is described in a manuscript submitted to <em>Limnology and Oceanography</em>.</p> <p>Changes in version 1.01 relative to original version: We corrected negligible mistakes in the metabolism data (third decimal of seasonal mean gross primary production, ecosystem respiration and net ecosystem production).</p>

Supplemental tables for a study of the seasonal Impacts of the Physical Environment on Biogeochemical Cycles in Arctic Lakes of the Mackenzie River Delta

<p>submitted abstract</p> <p>We conducted two- and six-year-long deployments of continuous water samplers (OsmoSamplers) and sensors (Temperature, pressure, light level, dissolved oxygen (DO) and conductivity) in nine lakes within the mid- to outer-delta region of the Mackenzie River and documented biogeochemical fluctuations (Mn, Fe, sulfate, and DO), defined physical processes that that drive such fluctuations, and constrained the impact of lake solutes on annual riverine fluxes. Five lakes were in the mid-delta region near Inuvik, NT, two lakes were in the outer delta, and two lakes were on the Arctic coastal plain and were not impacted by the Mackenzie River. In general, temperature minima occurred in September/October, indicative of ice formation, and distinct hydrostatic pressure (water level) anomalies occurred in May/June associated with ice breakup, lasting for days to months and impacting lake levels up to 4.2 m higher than &ldquo;normal&rdquo;. Such anomalies coincide with a dramatic change in solute concentrations. Systematic changes in solute concentrations indicate redox-driven biogeochemical reactions, salt exclusion during ice formation, and continuous to sporadic exchange of river water. Redox reactions were regulated by DO inputs stemming from atmospheric, photosynthetic, and riverine sources. During ice-covered periods dissolved sulfate may be conservative but was generally removed. Manganese and iron concentrations showed phases of production and removal during ice-covered periods, but both were produced overall. Calculated solute fluxes from lake waters alone to the Arctic Ocean may only impact yearly riverine fluxes for solutes that exceed ten times the river concentration prior to ice breakup (e.g., Mn and Fe).</p>
