Benthic macroinvertebrates in a protected area within the Brazilian savanna
<p><strong>This dataset is part of manuscript: <em>Vanishing springs and benthic macroinvertebrates as environmental quality indicators in a savanna protected area, Brazil</em></strong><br> <br> In the Neotropics, especially in southeastern Brazil, due to sugarcane and eucalypt monocultures, and the expansion of industries and the largely unplanned urban centers entire aquatic ecosystems are threatened. Nonetheless, benthic macroinvertebrates are important biomonitoring tools to assess the biotic and abiotic condition of endangered freshwater environments. In this study we address how benthic macroinvertebrate diversity respond to the combined effect of local environmental factors. We also aimed to evaluate how benthic macroinvertebrates diversity respond according to the habitat integrity. We expected to find higher diversity in the sampling sites with higher habitat integrity (i.e., low potential of hydrogen, electrical conductivity and water temperature, and high canopy coverage and concentration of dissolved oxygen). By using a multivariate approach (i.e., PCA) and a regression analysis (i.e., Linear Mixed-Effect Model) we were able to address the combined effect of local environmental variables on the benthic macroinvertebrate community. Our results show a negative effect of the environmental factors on the benthic macroinvertebrate diversity. As expected, sites with higher integrity and water quality values according to, respectively, the Habitat Integrity Index (i.e., HII) and the Biological Monitoring Working Party (i.e., BMWP’) tended to have higher benthic macroinvertebrates diversity. North Temperate Lakes LTER: Benthic Macroinvertebrates 1981 - current (Reformatted to a Darwin Core Archive)

The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: Macroinvertebrates are collected from selected shoreline and deep water locations in the seven primary lakes (Allequash, Big Muskellunge, Crystal, Sparkling, and Trout lakes, and unnamed lakes 27-02 [Crystal Bog], and 12-15 [Trout Bog]) in the Trout Lake area using modified Hester-Dendy samplers. Samplers are placed at fyke net and gill net locations in August and retrieved 3-4 weeks later. Macroinvertebrates are preserved in ethanol. This dataset contains counts of various groups of macroinvertebrates identified from specific samples. The majority of the identifications are at the genus level. The data table "Benthic Macroinvertebrate Codes" identifies the taxonomic group represented by each group code. Legacy effects of four decades of insecticide applications on contemporary benthic macroinvertebrates in eastern Canadian rivers
<p>These files support the manuscript "Legacy effects of four decades of insecticide applications on contemporary riverine benthic macroinvertebrates," which has been published in <em>Environmental Pollution </em>(https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envpol.2025.126397). This manuscript evaluates the relative importance of historical insecticide applications and modern environmental variables in explaining benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages at 274 sites across the province of New Brunswick, Canada.</p> <p>No new data was generated for the work described in this manuscript. Historical insecticide application data for the province of New Brunswick were taken from Heartz et al. 2023 (<a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/ecy.4068">https://doi.org/10.1002/ecy.4068</a>), and benthic macroinvertebrate data were downloaded from the publicly available CABIN database (<a href="https://open.canada.ca/data">https://open.canada.ca/data</a>, record ID 13564ca4-e330-40a5-9521-bfb1be767147). The authors cannot make their compiled data set publicly available because the subset of CABIN data used for this analysis includes privately maintained data that are only available upon request from respective stakeholders. Benthic macroinvertebrates of 63 northern Finnish streams along a dissolved organic carbon gradient
<p>Concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) have increased over the past few decades, causing freshwater browning. The impacts of browning on biodiversity have been little studied, despite many of the individual stressors associated with browning being known to control freshwater communities. We explored the responses of benthic invertebrates along a wide gradient of DOC concentrations (3.6 mg to 27 mg L<sup>-1</sup>) in 63 boreal streams variously impacted by peatland drainage or peat production. DOC was a prime determinant of macroinvertebrate diversity and abundance, with the strongest negative response in algal scrapers. Threshold indicator taxa analysis indicated a community change at 12-13 mg DOC L<sup>-1</sup>, with only four taxa increasing, while 13 taxa decreased along the DOC gradient. Our findings of both a gradual loss and an abrupt change of biodiversity along a browning gradient provide a benchmark against which changes to stream biodiversity relative to the predicted browning trend can be gauged.</p>
