Data from: Thalamus and focal to bilateral seizures: a multi-scale cognitive imaging study

<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b><i>Objective</i></b></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>To investigate the functional correlates of recurrent secondarily generalized seizures in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), using task-based fMRI as a framework to test for epilepsy-specific network rearrangements. As the thalamus modulates propagation of temporal-lobe onset seizures and promotes cortical synchronization during cognition, we hypothesized that occurrence of secondarily generalized, i.e. focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures (FBTCS), would relate to thalamic dysfunction, altered connectivity and whole-brain network centrality.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b><i>Methods</i></b></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>FBTCS occur in a third of patients with TLE and are a major determinant of disease severity. In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed 113 patients with drug-resistant TLE (55 left/58 right), who performed a verbal fluency fMRI task that elicited robust thalamic activation. Thirty-three patients (29%) had experienced at least one FBTCS in the year preceding the investigation. We compared patients with TLE-FBTCS to those without FBTCS via a multi-scale approach, entailing analysis of SPM12-derived measures of activation, task-modulated thalamic functional connectivity (psychophysiological interaction), and graph-theoretical metrics of centrality. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b><i>Results</i></b></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Individuals with TLE-FBTCS had less task-related activation of bilateral thalamus, with left-sided emphasis, and left hippocampus than those without FBTCS. In TLE-FBTCS, we also found greater task-related thalamotemporal and thalamo-motor connectivity, and higher thalamic degree and betweenness centrality. Patterns of bilateral asymmetry and allometry in Late Devonian Polygnathus conodonts

<p>Conodont animals were jawless vertebrates equipped with a feeding apparatus composed of several tooth-like elements. The P1 elements, at the rear of the apparatus, are well preserved and abundant in the sediments, and their temporal evolution constitutes a tracer of ecological interactions and/or abiotic changes in the water column. However, occlusion occurred in these animals between paired right and left elements, occasioning bilateral asymmetry, which, together with allometric growth, may obliterate the temporal differences. This study aimed at disentangling these different components of morphological variation in Late Devonian <em>Polygnathus</em> P1 elements. An extensive 2D geometric morphometric analysis of the platform shape was performed and completed by a 3D study on a subset of elements. The 2D and 3D morphometric quantifications provided highly congruent results, showing that the 2D shape provides a good approximation of the element geometry. The 3D analysis, however, provides a more complete description of the geometrical changes involved in growth and bilateral asymmetry, providing insights on the constraints related to occlusion. In complement, the 2D analysis allowed a quantitative assessment of the variation between and within species, showing that allometry and bilateral asymmetry were differently expressed depending on the species considered. This suggests that constraints imposed on pairing by the morphology of the elements, and the pattern of bilateral asymmetry, varied even among related species. The within-species variation was so important that it obliterated temporal trends; a relationship of Polygnathus shape and conodont biofacies variations through the Famennian suggested an evolution driven by ecological interactions between conodonts.</p>

Whole body gait kinematics in patients with bilateral and chronic unilateral vestibulopathy

<p>This dataset contains whole body kinematics and 3D ground reaction forces and moments from 30 subjects (10 with bilateral vestibulopathy, 10 with unilateral vestibulopathy, and 10 healthy subjects) during gait at three different walking speed: slow, comfortable, and fast. Three repetitions of these gait were performed by each subject. They were instrumented with 35 reflective placed on the whole body according to the Convention Gait Model 1.0. A 12-camera motion capture system (Oqus 7+, Qualisys, G&ouml;teborg, Sweden), set at a 100 Hz sampling frequency, was used to track cutaneous reflective markers. The marker trajectories were labeled using Qualisys Tracking Manager software (QTM 2019.3, Qualisys, G&ouml;teborg, Sweden) and exported in the C3D file format. Three force plates sampled at 1000 Hz (AMTI Accugait, Watertown, MA, USA) were used to record 3D ground reaction forces and moments. Results of gait standard deviation (GaitSD) and anchoring index (AI), as well as the kinematics data, are included in this dataset in csv file format.</p>

Bilateral Human-Robot Control for Semi-Autonomous UAV Navigation

<p><strong>This video demonstrates the work towards a novel control architecture for UAV navigation. In general, UAVs are not easy to operate and skilled pilots are required for a good performance in manual flight. However, currently it is impossible to capture every possible situation an UAV could encounter in the autonomous control. To avoid overly complicated control, a semi-autonomous control approach can be used, so the drone is partly autonomously and partly manually piloted. The novelty of the approach presented here is in the way this semi-autonomy is defined. </strong></p> <p><strong>As the UAV regularly operates autonomously, it is not desirable to switch to manual control in dangerous procedures. Instead, a more supervisory method of control can be applied in which the UAV is always controlled by the onboard computer, but the boundaries of control are controlled by the operator. Whenever a situation requires bigger risks, the operator is informed requested by the drone for help, which he\she can offer by softening certain boundaries of the UAV.</strong></p> <p><strong>This video demonstrates the concept.</strong></p>

Bilateral Stand-alone Robotic Motion-Assisted Finger Exoskeleton for Home Rehabilitation

<p><span>This presents a novel exoskeleton robot which can be used at home for rehabilitating the index fingers of stroke-affected patients. This exoskeleton is designed as a one degree-of-freedom four bar mechanism able to guide the human index finger motion. The proposed device is the only lateral, stand-alone mechanism built till date which can carry the weight of the human hand, thus making the user free from wearing it. The design starts by tracing the trajectory of the index finger using &lsquo;Angulus&rsquo; software. &lsquo;SALAR&rsquo; software is used for dimensional synthesis of four bar mechanism. Using additive manufacturing technology, a prototype of the proposed device is developed. Static force analysis is done to select the most appropriate actuator for producing the required torque to manipulate the fingers effectively. The kinematics of the index finger while performing finger curl exercise is obtained. The proposed linkage mechanism can drive the index fingers of both the hands. Simulation and experimental results proved feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed design to be used for index finger rehabilitation for a wide range of users and applications by making simple minor alterations in the design. Also, the device can be used for rehabilitating the middle fingers together with the index fingers.</span></p>

TRADE4SD Deliverable 2.3: Database and infographics on standards rapprochement: STCs and bilateral measure of distance on pesticides and antibiotics

<p><span>One of the objectives of the Horizon2020 project &ldquo;TRADE4SD&rdquo; is to offer policy recommendations for improving trade policies at the national, European, and global levels, including reforms to the WTO, and to enhance policy alignment. To achieve this goal, it is essential to address the impact of NTMs, which, despite their increasing use, remain largely underexplored in terms of the effects on international trade. This limited understanding is due to the complexity of NTMs and their effects are difficult to generalise. Several critical areas related to NTMs and their implications for international trade require further investigation, which &ldquo;TRADE4SD&rdquo; seeks to address. This work explores how NTMs affect market access for developing countries, as these nations may face various challenges, such as limited capabilities, technological gaps, weaker infrastructures and institutions, and asymmetric information. More specifically, &ldquo;TRADE4SD&rdquo; aims to identify best practices for improving the management of SPS, which are essential for enhancing the competitiveness of agricultural and food exports. Strengthening SPS capacity is also vital for boosting productivity in the agricultural and food processing industries, contributing to agricultural and rural development, and helping to alleviate poverty. </span></p> <p><span>This deliverable consists of two main sections: one addressing Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) for pesticides and antibiotics and the other focusing on Specific Trade Concerns (STCs). </span></p> <p><span>In the first section, we analysed the regulations and then acquired and processed the data to create the databases, which we later used to develop the indices and infographics (for both pesticides and antibiotics).</span></p> <p><span>In the STCs section, we analysed WTO documentation on all open disputes and verified their status. During our analysis, we identified the relationships between STCs and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Finally, we developed the infographics.</span></p>

<p>This is a curated text corpus composed of the texts of bilateral general cultural agreements signed between 1935 and 1972 and deposited with either the League of Nations Treaty Service (LTS) or United Nations Treaty Service (UNTS) and published by those organizations. All texts are in English, either as an original language or in the translation provided by these treaty services.</p> <p>The complete list of bilateral treaties included in this corpus is <a href="https://zenodo.org/record/7361913">available here</a>. The source documents can be found online in PDF form through the <a href="https://treaties.un.org/Pages/Content.aspx?path=DB/UNTS/pageIntro_en.xml">UNTS website</a>. We were able to identify this selection of agreements thanks to the electronic World Treaty Index (<a href="http://worldtreatyindex.com">worldtreatyindex.com</a>), or eWTI [1]. Data From: B1 Field inhomogeneity correction for qDESS T2 mapping: application to rapid bilateral knee imaging

<p><strong>Purpose</strong>: T2&nbsp;mapping is a powerful tool for studying osteoarthritis (OA) changes and bilateral imaging may be useful in investigating the role of between-knee asymmetry in OA onset and progression. The quantitative double-echo in steady-state (qDESS) can provide fast simultaneous bilateral knee T2&nbsp;and high-resolution morphometry for cartilage and meniscus.<br> The qDESS uses an analytical signal model to compute T2&nbsp;relaxometry maps, which require knowledge of the flip angle (FA).&nbsp;<br> In the presence of B1&nbsp;inhomogeneities, inconsistencies between the nominal and actual FA can affect the accuracy of T2&nbsp;measurements.<br> We propose a pixel-wise B1&nbsp;correction method for qDESS T2&nbsp;mapping exploiting an auxiliary B1&nbsp;map to compute the actual FA used in the model.<br> &nbsp;<br> <strong>Methods</strong>:&nbsp;The technique was validated in a phantom and in vivo with simultaneous bilateral knee imaging.&nbsp;<br> T2&nbsp;measurements of femoral cartilage (FC) of both knees of six healthy participants were repeated longitudinally to investigate the association between T2&nbsp;variation and B1.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>:&nbsp;The results showed that applying the B1&nbsp;correction mitigated T2&nbsp;variations that were driven by B1&nbsp;inhomogeneities.&nbsp;<br> Specifically, T2&nbsp;left-right symmetry increased following the B1&nbsp;correction (rc&nbsp;= 0.74 &gt;&nbsp;rc&nbsp;= 0.69). Without the B1&nbsp;correction, T2&nbsp;values showed a linear dependence with B1. The linear coefficient decreased using the B1&nbsp;correction (from 24.3 <span class="math-tex">\(\pm\)</span>&nbsp;1.6 ms to 4.1 <span class="math-tex">\(\pm\)</span>&nbsp;1.8) and the correlation was not statistically significant after the application of the Bonferroni correction (p-value &gt;&nbsp;0.01).<br> &nbsp;<br> <strong>Conclusion</strong>:&nbsp;the study showed that B1 correction could mitigate variations driven by the sensitivity of the qDESS T2&nbsp;mapping method to B1, therefore increasing the sensitivity to detect real biological changes. The proposed method may improve the robustness of bilateral qDESS T2&nbsp;mapping, allowing for an accurate and more efficient evaluation of OA pathways and pathophysiology through longitudinal and cross-sectional studies.</p> <p><strong>This repository contains the raw data for reproducing the&nbsp;results reported in the paper. The data are provided in NIFTI format. The repository also contains the MALTAB&nbsp;scripts used to compute B<sub>1</sub> maps from the NIFTI data.</strong></p>
