Data for: Shy-boldness cannot predict egg rejection in the Japanese tit
<p><span>In response to brood parasitism, which significantly reduces the reproductive success of avian hosts, hosts have evolved the ability to recognize and reject parasitic eggs. Many studies have revealed the influencing factors of egg recognition and egg rejection, and recent study found that host personality, along the bold-shy continuum, can influence egg rejection behavior. In addition, the egg rejection behavior of hosts differed among populations, suggesting that individuals with different personalities may evolve various adaptive behaviors under different parasitic pressures, but there has been few relevant experiments to verify this. In the present study, two populations of the Japanese tit <em>Parus minor</em> distributed in China were used to examine whether there were differences in egg rejection behavior of individuals with different personalities. The results showed that egg rejection rates of bold individuals (who remained in the nest box when encountering human invaders) and shy individuals (who immediately flew away from the nest box when encountering human invaders) were similar in both populations of the Japanese tit, and there were also no significant differences in egg rejection rates between individuals of the same personality in the two populations. This study suggests that host personality, along the bold-shy continuum, does not account for egg rejection behavior in the Japanese tits. This may be due to either other factors that affect egg rejection behavior counteracting the effect of personality, or the presence of multiple personalities that act together in the Japanese tits counteracting the effect of a single personality trait.</span></p>

Raw fMRI data from 12 rats used in the manuscript "Mapping of hemodynamic responses to the sensorymotor stimulation in a rodent model: a BOLD fMRI study" submitted to PlosOne for publication
<p>Raw data are from twelve male adult Wistar rats (Charles River Laboratories, Paris-France) weighing 300 ± 20g.</p> <p>Rats were initially anesthetized (induction) with 3% isoflurane and were maintained under 0,7-0.8% (sedation along with a muscle relaxation) during fMRI session. </p> <p>Each rat was submitted to two fMRI sessions: one with TE of 30 ms and and other with TE of 40 ms.</p> <p>For fMRI acquisition, electrodes were inserted subcutaneously in the palmar surface of the right hindpaw of each rat and electrical stimulation (current pulses with a 1.7 mA amplitude, 10 ms duration and 8 Hz frequency) was applied in a block-design starting with a resting period of 25s as a baseline followed by 25s stimulation, repeated 8 times.</p> <p>Ten 1-mm thick contiguous axial slices, from -6.36 mm to +2.64 mm to Bregma, were acquired with a two-shot gradient echo planar imaging (GE EPI) pulse sequence (2.56 cm2 FOV; 64x64 matrix size; a TR of 1000 ms; a flip angle of 50°) resulting in the pixel size of 0.4 mm.</p> <p>All imaging experiments were performed on a 4.7T Bruker (Biospec 47/40, Bruker, GmbH, Ettlingen,Germany) with a horizontal bore magnet equipped with a 12 cm gradient coil (Bruker BGA12, 400 mT/m) and interfaced to AVANCE III console. Two actively decoupled RF coils were used: a 7.2-cm diameter volume coil for transmission and a 2-cm diameter surface coil (Rapid Biomedical, Rimpar, Germany) positioned on the top of the animal's head for reception.</p>
Personality affects female mate choice: frogs displaying more consistent bold behaviors are choosier
<p>Mate choice is an important cause of natural and sexual selection, and drives the evolution and elaboration of male ornaments. Yet mate choice decisions are often neither consistent nor uniform, and a range of factors have been identified to influence variation between and within individuals. A potential source of variation influencing preferences and/or choosiness is animal personality, i.e., repeatable among-individual differences in behaviors. Not only may individuals differ in average personality phenotype, but also vary in how consistently they display said personality. Distinguishing between personality and consistency is important because both aspects are potentially naturally selected traits that may yet influence how sexually selected ornaments are evaluated. Here we use a predator evasion assay to test whether there is variation in boldness among female gray treefrogs (<em>Hyla versicolor</em>), and then examine whether personality traits (spectrum of shy to bold) are correlated with choosiness for longer duration calls. We document substantial and repeatable between-individual variation in boldness, suggesting the presence of animal personality. Results also reveal that the consistency with which females expressed boldness is independent from average personality phenotype and that it is correlated with choosiness: more consistently bold females were choosier. </p>

Boldness suppresses hoarding behavior in food hoarding season and reduces over-wintering survival in a social rodent
<p><span>The "pace-of-life" syndrome (POLS) framework can encompass multiple personality axes that drive important functional behaviours (e.g., foraging behaviour) and that co-vary with multiple life history traits. Food hoarding is an adaptive behaviour important for an animal's adaptation to seasonal fluctuations in food availability. However, the empirical evidence for the relationships between animal personality and hoarding behaviour remains unclear, including its fitness consequences in the POLS framework. In this study, the Mongolian gerbil (<em>Meriones</em> <em>unguiculatus</em>), a social rodent, was used as a model system to investigate how boldness or shyness is associated with food hoarding strategies in the food hoarding season and overwinter survival or reproduction at individual and group levels. The results of this study showed that compared to shy gerbils, bold gerbils had a lower effort foraging strategy during the food hoarding season and exhibited lower overwinter survival, but bold–shy personality differences had no effect on overwinter reproduction. These findings suggest that the personality of the animal is a key factor that affects the foraging strategy during the food hoarding season in Mongolian gerbils. Personality may be related to energy states or the reaction to environmental change (e.g., predation risk, food availability) in bold or shy social animals. These results reflect animal life history trade-offs between "current versus future reproduction" and "reproduction versus self-maintenance", thereby helping Mongolian gerbils adapt to seasonal fluctuations in their living environment.</span></p>

Beyond bold versus shy: Zebrafish exploratory behavior falls into several behavioral clusters and is influenced by strain and sex
<p>Individual differences in exploratory behavior have been found across a range of taxa and are thought to contribute to evolutionary fitness. Animals that explore more of a novel environment and visit areas of high predation risk are considered bold, whereas animals with the opposite behavioral pattern are shy. Here, we determined whether this bimodal characterization of bold versus shy adequately captures the breadth of behavioral variation in zebrafish or if there are more than these two subtypes. To identify behavioral categories, we applied unsupervised machine to three-dimensional swim traces from over 400 adult zebrafish across four strains (AB, TL, TU, and WIK) and both sexes. We found that behavior stratified into four distinct clusters: previously described bold and shy behavior and two new behavioral types we call wall-huggers and active explorers. Clusters were stable across time and influenced by strain and sex where we found that TLs were shy, female TU fish were bold, male TU fish were active explorers, and male ABs were wall-huggers. Our work suggests that zebrafish exploratory behavior has greater complexity than previously recognized and lays the groundwork for the use of zebrafish in understanding the biological basis of individual differences in behavior.</p>

Genbank and BOLD accession numbers of sequences from "New insights into the diversity of cryptobenthic Cirripectes blennies in the Mascarene Archipelago sampled using Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structures (ARMS)"
<p><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> <p>Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structures (ARMS) are artificial mini-reefs designed for standardised sampling of sessile and small motile cryptobenthic organisms. ARMS are also effective for collecting small cryptobenthic fishes, such as the combtooth blennies of the genus <em>Cirripectes</em>. Recent studies discovered several <em>Cirripectes</em> species endemic to islands or archipelagos, in spite of the generally broad distributions of tropical and subtropical blennies. Thus, in order to evaluate the diversity and distribution of <em>Cirripectes</em> species in the Mascarene Archipelago, a little studied region but an important biodiversity hotspot, complete mitochondrial genomes and nuclear rhodopsin genes were sequenced for 39 specimens collected with ARMS deployed on outer reef slopes at Reunion and Rodrigues islands. Mitochondrial COI sequences were analysed to integrate these specimens within the largest dataset of publicly available sequences. Three species were found in the Mascarene Archipelago, <em>Cirripectes castaneus, C. randalli, </em>and <em>C. stigmaticus</em>. <em>C. castaneus</em> and <em>C. stigmaticus</em> both have an Indo-Pacific distribution with several haplotypes shared among distant localities. In agreement with the literature, <em>C. randalli </em>shows a small-range endemism restricted to the Mascarenes. We confirmed the presence of <em>C. castaneus, C. randalli </em>and <em>C. stigmaticus </em>in Rodrigues, and the presence of <em>C. stigmaticus</em> in Reunion. Prey availability influences the effect of boldness on reproductive success in a mammalian predator
<p>Boldness is an important trait in wild populations and among-individual differences can link to individual fitness<span>. </span>The strength and direction of relationships between behavioral and life-history traits may however vary according to environmental conditions, where fluctuating selection acting on behavioral traits contributes to the maintenance of personality differences. <span>We </span>explored sources of variation in <span>Arctic fox (<em>Vulpes</em> <em>lagopus</em>) boldness </span>and <span>investigated how temporal variation in the abundance of a main prey (lemmings) influences the relationship between fox boldness and reproductive success. We measured the behavioral reaction of individuals when escaping after handling, as an indicator of their boldness. We obtained 70 measurements from 42 individuals </span>during two years of low lemming abundance and two years of high lemming abundance<span> and assessed fox litter size as an indicator of reproductive success. First, individual characteristics (age, sex, mass) did not affect Arctic fox boldness, while individual identity generated variation in boldness. Next, </span>we found that during years of low lemming density, individuals behaving boldly had more pups than those behaving less boldly, suggesting boldness may provide an advantage when lemmings are scarce by increasing hunting success or allowing access to alternative resources. However, all <span>individuals tended to show high levels of boldness when lemming density was high, and all produced large litters. </span>Temporal variation in the abundance of a main prey might therefore influence the relation between boldness and reproductive success of a predator, and if individuals consistently differ in their level of boldness, fluctuating selection could contribute to the maintenance of personality.</p>
Fitness, risk taking, and spatial behavior covary with boldness in experimental vole populations
<p>Individuals of a population may vary along a pace-of-life syndrome from highly fecund, short-lived, bold, dispersive 'fast' types at one end of the spectrum to less fecund, long-lived, shy, plastic 'slow' types at the other end. Risk-taking behaviour might mediate the underlying life-history trade-off but empirical evidence supporting this hypothesis is still ambiguous. Using experimentally created populations of common voles (<em>Microtus arvalis</em>) - a species with distinct seasonal life-history trajectories - we aimed to test whether individual differences in boldness behaviour co-vary with risk-taking, space use, and fitness<span>. </span>We quantified risk taking, space use (via automated tracking), survival and reproductive success (via genetic parentage analysis) in 8 to 14 experimental, mixed-sex populations of 113 common voles of known boldness type in large grassland enclosures over a significant part of their adult life span and two reproductive events. Populations were assorted to contain extreme boldness types (bold or shy) of both sexes. Bolder individuals took more risks than shyer ones, which did not affect survival. Bolder males but not females produced more offspring than shy conspecifics. Daily home range and core area sizes, based on 95% and 50% Kernel density estimates (20 ± 10 per individual, n = 54 individuals), were highly repeatable over time. Individual space use unfolded differently for sex-boldness type combinations over the course of the experiment. While day ranges decreased for shy females, they increased for bold females and all males. Space use trajectories may, hence, indicate differences in coping styles when confronted with a novel social and physical environment. Thus, inter-individual differences in boldness predict risk taking under near natural conditions and have consequences for fitness in males, which have a higher reproductive potential than females. Given extreme inter- and intra-annual fluctuations in population density in the study species and its short life span, density-dependent fluctuating selection operating differently on the sexes might maintain (co)variation in boldness, risk taking and pace-of-life.</p>
