Rainfall and nest site competition delay Mountain Bluebird and Tree Swallow breeding but do not impact productivity
<p>Optimizing breeding phenology, an important aspect of fitness, is complex for migratory species as they must make key timing decisions early, and remotely, from breeding sites. We examined the role of weather (locally and cross-seasonally), cavity availability, and competitive exclusion in determining among-year variation in breeding phenology over 17 years for two migratory, cavity-nesting birds: Mountain Bluebirds (<em>Sialia currucoides</em>; n = 462 nests) and Tree Swallows (<em>Tachycineta bicolor</em>; n = 572) using natural tree cavities in British Columbia, Canada. We assessed weather effects within the winter and migratory range and at our study sites. We quantified competition as the proportion of cavities occupied by European Starlings (<em>Sturnus vulgaris</em>) (for both species) and Mountain Bluebird (for Tree Swallow only) in each year. For 229 bluebird and 177 swallow nests with known fates, we tested whether late years resulted in reduced productivity. Although the effects were small, heavy rainfall and strong diurnal westerly winds during migration were associated with breeding delays for Mountain Bluebirds. However, cavity availability (earlier breeding with increases) had a 5-8X greater effect on timing than migratory conditions. There was no evidence that starling competition delayed bluebirds. In Tree Swallows, greater local daily rainfall was associated with delayed breeding, as was starling abundance (the effect of starlings was 1.4X times smaller than that of rainfall). Neither bluebird abundance nor cavity availability changed swallow phenology. Neither species showed reduced productivity in late breeding years. In both species, individuals that bred late relative to conspecifics within-year had smaller clutches and greater probability of nest failure. We conclude that breeding ground conditions, particularly cavity limitation and local rainfall (for swallows), are important drivers of breeding phenology for our focal species, but that the productivity cost of late years, at least for Tree Swallows, is minimal. </p>
Data from: Individual variation in parental workload and breeding productivity in female European starlings: is the effort worth it?
We analyzed individual variation in work load (nest visit rate) during chick-rearing, and the consequences of this variation in terms of breeding productivity, in a highly synchronous breeder, the European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) focusing on female birds. There was marked (10- to 16-fold) variation in total, female and male nest visit rates, among individuals, but individual variation in female nest visit rate was independent of environment (rainfall, temperature) and metrics of individual quality (laying date, clutch size, amount of male provisioning help), and was only weakly associated with chick demand (i.e., day 6 brood size). Female nest visit rate was independent of date and experimentally delayed birds provisioned at the same rate as peak-nesting birds; supporting a lack of effect of date per se. Brood size at fledging was positively but weakly related to total nest visit rate (male + female), with >fivefold variation in nest visit rate for any given brood size, and in females brood size at fledging and chick mass at fledging were independent of female nest visit rate, that is, individual variation in workload was not associated with higher productivity. Nevertheless, nest visit rate in females was repeatable among consecutive days (6–8 posthatching), and between peak (first) and second broods, but not among years. Our data suggest that individual females behave as if committed to a certain level of parental care at the outset of their annual breeding attempt, but this varies among years, that is, behavior is not fixed throughout an individual's life but represents an annually variable decision. We suggest females are making predictable decisions about their workload during provisioning that maximizes their overall fitness based on an integration of information on their current environment (although these cues currently remain unidentified).
Data from: Testosterone production ability predicts breeding success and tracks breeding stage in male finches
Testosterone (T) is an important mediator of reproductive behaviours and potential target for selection. However, there are few data relating natural variation in T to fitness estimates. Here, we used the GnRH challenge (an injection of gonadotropin-releasing hormone which stimulates maximal T release), to examine how individual differences in T relate to reproductive success and how T changes across date and breeding stage. We measured pre- and post-challenge T, in captive male Gouldian finches (Erythrura gouldiae), before and after introducing females, and across breeding stage. Post-challenge T before introducing females positively predicted breeding success. Post-challenge T levels were unrelated to date, but strongly related to stage; T production ability was strongly attenuated in incubating males. Prechallenge T levels related only to date. Our results suggest that T production ability is an important target for selection and that when males invest heavily in parental care they reduce their sensitivity to GnRH.

Characterization of Natural Production Environment of Ogaden Cattle Breed in Wabeshebele zone of Somali Regional State in Ethiopia
<p>The objective of the study was to characterize natural production environment of Ogaden cattle breed. Questionnaire used for the study was designed using the general information developed by FAO (2012). 3 districts and 6 kebeles were purposely and 126 cattle keepers were randomly selected for data collection. The studied variables were farming, cattle breeding practice, purpose of keeping, selection criteria, feeding, health care and veterinary service, income and non-income function, and cattle production constraints. SAS version 9.2, 2008 software was used for data analysis. 30.16% were pastoral while 69.84% were agro-pastoral. Significant difference seen between districts in crop land holding, but no significant difference between districts in forage land holding. Cattle keepers prefer to keep local Ogaden cattle breed and were practicing pure breeding. Majority of them do not produce adequate pasture. They treat diseased animals by traditional method (57.94%). Male cattle were kept for socio-cultural purpose whilst female cattle were kept for milk production. None of the agro-pastoral respondents have recalled that they use draught power and manure of cattle. Cow milk in the study area has taken the first line consumed by the livestock owners and generating daily income for their family need among other livestock products making cattle the most important livestock species. Prolonged feed shortage was the first cattle production constraint. The cattle keeping society in the studied area appeared to have distinct culture and tradition of keeping and utilization cattle.</p>
