Data on anatomy, movement, and foraging behaviour of three cattle breeds of different productivity
<p>Given are</p> <ul> <li>the breed of the cattle (AH: Angus×Holstein, OB: Original Braunvieh, HC: Highland cattle),</li> <li>the age of the cows in months,</li> <li>the body weight at the beginning (Weight_1) and the end (Weight_2) of the experiment in kg,</li> <li>the summarised base of all eight claws of each cow in cm<sup>2</sup>,</li> <li>the average number of steps per hour as recorded by the pedometer,</li> <li>the average speed in m h<sup>-1</sup>,</li> <li>the ratio of the time spent lying as recorded by the pedometer,</li> <li>the evenness of space use calculated as Camargo’s index based on GPS positions,</li> <li>the evenness of forage selection calculated as Pielou’s evenness,</li> <li>the average forage quality indicator value (Briemle, Nitsche, and Nitsche 2002) of the selected diet,</li> <li>the ratio of broad leaved grasses, legumes, thistles and shrubs within the diet of each cow.</li> </ul> <p>All measurements conducted on the pastures are presented as averaged over all pastures (xxx_mean) and separatly for the three pastures (xxx_1, xxx_2, xxx_3).</p>

<p>This data set contains information on breeding abundance and breeding productivity of black-legged kittiwake <em>(Rissa tridactyla)</em> in OSPAR Region II (Greater North Sea). These data have been used to construct a demographic indicator of breeding productivity as part of OSPAR Quality Status Report 2023, and for reporting under the European Union's Marine Strategy Framework Directive.</p>

Data for: Estimation of genetic parameters for the implementation of selective breeding in commercial insect production
<p><strong>Background</strong></p> <p>There is a burgeoning interest in using insects as a sustainable source of food and feed, particularly by capitalising on various waste materials and by-products that are typically considered of low value. Enhancing the commercial production of insects can be achieved through two main approaches: optimising environmental conditions and implementing selective breeding strategies. In order to successfully target desirable traits through selective breeding, having a thorough understanding of the genetic parameters pertaining to those traits is essential. In this study, a full-sib half-sib mating design was used to estimate variance components and heritabilities for larval size and survival at day seven of development, development time and survival from egg to adult, and to estimate correlations between these traits, within an outbred population of house flies (<em>Musca domestica</em>), using high-throughput phenotyping for data collection.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong></p> <p>The results revealed low to intermediate heritabilities and positive genetic correlations between all traits except development time and survival to day seven of development and from egg to adulthood. Surprisingly, larval size at day seven exhibited a comparatively low heritability (0.10) in contrast to development time (0.25), a trait that is believed to have a stronger association with overall fitness. A decline in family numbers resulting from low mating success and high overall mortality reduced the amount of available data which resulted in large standard errors for the estimated parameters. Environmental factors made a substantial contribution to the phenotypic variation, which was overall high for all traits.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions</strong></p> <p>There is potential for genetic improvement in all studied traits and estimates of genetic correlations indicate a partly shared genetic architecture among the traits. All estimates have large standard errors. Implementing high-throughput phenotyping is imperative for the estimation of genetic parameters in fast developing insects, and facilitates age synchronisation, which is vital in a breeding population. In spite of endeavours to minimise non-genetic sources of variation, all traits demonstrated substantial influences from environmental components. This emphasises the necessity of thorough attention to the experimental design before breeding is initiated in insect populations.</p>
Data from: Do ditch-side electrical fences improve the breeding productivity of ground-nesting waders?
<p class="MsoNormal">I<span>nsufficient reproduction as a consequence of predation on eggs and chicks is a major determinant of population decline in ground-nesting birds, including waders. For many populations, there is an urgent need to maintain breeding populations at key sites, and conservation practitioners need to find viable management solutions to reduce predation.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal">One tool available to the practitioner are fences that exclude key predators from areas containing breeding birds. Temporary electric fencing is an increasingly popular predator exclusion intervention, but such fences have costs associated with purchase and the time needed to erect and maintain them. Their effectiveness and optimal application are also frequently questioned.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">We evaluate the use of temporary ditch-side four-strand electric fences in lowland grasslands in two countries, The Netherlands and England, in areas containing high densities of breeding waders.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">In both countries and in all years, godwit and lapwing nest survival was significantly higher within areas enclosed by ditch-side electric fences. Brood survival, assessed for godwits in The Netherlands, was also higher within fenced areas in all years. This demonstrates that using temporary electric fences to enclose ground-nesting birds can be an effective tool for improving breeding productivity.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">In our study, closely managed electric fences were effective at excluding red foxes <em>Vulpes vulpes</em>, but not avian and other mammalian predators. The positive effect that electric fencing had on nest and brood survival therefore likely results from a reduction in the total number of visits by mammalian predators, and especially visits by foxes.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Although it requires a substantial time investment throughout the period of use, our temporary electric fence design provides flexibility compared to other fence designs when it comes to enclosing different areas within a season and between years, as the targets for protection change or as land and flood management dictate. <span>This conservation intervention can help buy the time required to develop and implement longer term solutions for application at larger scales.</span></p>

Data - Sow what you sell: strategies for integrating organic breeding and seed production into value chain partnerships
<p>Online survey targeting organic farmers on organic seed use; 25 questions in the survey. The survey was conducted between November 2018 and June 2019 and distributed through the networks of partners involved in the Horizon2020 project LIVESEED, including 23 breeding & research institutes, seven breeding companies, eight seed companies, and 11 organic associations. 752 complete entries by farmers from 20 countries from Central, Northern, Southern and Eastern Europe could be used from the 1,475 total accesses to the survey.</p>
