Total tree ring widths, earlywood ring widths, latewood ring widths, and stable carbon isotope composition of tree rings from 1979-2003 for 18 trees (3 trees/site for 6 sites) located in the 2004 burn along the Steese Highway.

This dataset contains annual raw ring width measurements, earlywood width, latewood width, and annual stable carbon isotope composition from 1979-2003 for 18 trees. A total of 6 sites were sampled. Ring widths were measured using WinDendro (resolution 0.001 mm) on two radii per stem disk collected 1.3 m along stem. Data is the average of the two radii measurments in each year for each tree. Accuracy of ring width dates were checked by crossdating using COFECHA. We manually separated annual rings from the outer twenty-five years

Major and trace bulk sample and micro-XRF geochemistry, carbon and oxygen stable isotope compositions of magmatic and sedimentary rocks from Hovedøya Island, Oslo fjord, Norway.

<p>This data set reports on the methodologies and results of geochemical analysis carried out on samples of magmatic rock, calcite and sedimentary rocks of Hovedoya Island, Oslo fjord, Norway, in the framework of the publication by Poppe et al. (2020; <em>Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems</em>; <a href="https://doi.org/10.1029/2019GC008685">https://doi.org/10.1029/2019GC008685</a>). The major and trace element bulk sample geochemical analysis was carried at the Laboratoire G-Time, Universit&eacute; Libre de Bruxelles, Brussels (V. Debaille), the micro-XRF mapping and line scanning, was carried out at the laboratory of the Analytical and Environmental Geo-Chemistry (AMGC) group at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Brussels (N.J. de Winter, S. Poppe) and the stable isotope composition analysis was carried out as well at the AMGC laboratory (S. Poppe, S. Goderis), supervised by P. Claeys and M. Kervyn, in collaboration with P. Boulvias.&nbsp; Data sheets are provided in .csv or .xlsx format and compressed folders containing .TIF images of &micro;XRF elemental maps are attached. This data set also contains the complete data sets obtained for the construction of calibration curves for &micro;XRF line scan analysis of rock samples of magmatic composition at the AMGC laboratory at VUB.</p>

We show that a combination of tree-ring carbon and oxygen isotopes from Siberia provides robust information on summer sunshine duration, which we use for an annual 1505-year reconstruction of July sunshine duration variability (1,5K-SIB-JSDR). We found that the Medieval maximum is 56 % higher than the average over 1505 years. Rapid and drastic decreases in sunshine duration up to 60 % correspond to major stratospheric volcanic eruptions. Grand Solar Minima and total sunspot numbers are also well preserved in the 1,5K-SIB-JSDR. Coherency with a global air temperature composite and spring Arctic Oscillation indicate that a large-scale climate signal is retained in our sunshine reconstruction.</p> <p>Keywords: Stable isotopes; Sunshine duration; Reconstruction; Volcanic eruptions; Sunspot numbers; Atmospheric circulation patterns; Permafrost; Siberia</p>

Surface Sedimentary Black Carbon Concentrations, Fluxes, and Stable and Radiocarbon Isotopes in the Equatorial Atlantic Ocean

<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>Surface sediments (0-1 cm) obtained from equatorial Atlantic Ocean isolated for black carbon using the chemothermal oxidation at 375 method. Multicores were taken during aboard the R.V. Endeavor (EN651) from February 27th 2020 through March 17th 2020 using a MC-800.</p> <p><strong>Core collection</strong></p> <p>MC-800 tubes were labeled (EN651-&ldquo;Site number&rdquo;-MC&rdquo;coring attempt number&rdquo;&ldquo;letter of core&rdquo;,ex: EN651-01-MC01a) and photographed before sectioning. The water on top of the core was syphoned off and a thin piece of stainless-steel sheet was slid under the foot of the tube. The foot was bent up and the stainless-steel sheet was used to transfer the core to the core extruder. Cores were sectioned at 1 cm intervals down to 10 cm, then 2 cm intervals down to 20 cm, using the piece of stainless-steel and a cake spatula to cut them. The remainder of the core was wrapped in combusted aluminum foil and placed in a zip-lock bag for storage. Sections of cores were stored in amber glass jars placed in a freezer. One core was transferred with the extruder to a PVC tube and capped for archival storage. If 5 or more cores were recovered, 0.5 cm sections would be taken down to 10 cm and the remainder of the core wrapped in foil and zip-lock bagged before being frozen. Due to a limited supply of jars, the 0.5 cm core sections were wrapped in combusted aluminum foil and placed in a ziplock bag before being stored with other samples. All cores and core sections were stored at -20 ̊C.</p> <p><strong>Analytical methods</strong><br>Surface sediment samples (0 &ndash; 1 cm) were dried at 60 ˚C until dry and passed through a 420 &micro;m sieve before analysis. Total organic carbon samples were weighed into silver capsules (Elemental microanalysis silver capsules ultra-clean pressed 8 x 5 mm, D2030), acidified to remove inorganic carbon (2 M HCl), and folded into tin capsules (Costech tin capsules 10 x 10 mm, 041073). Black carbon was isolated using the CTO 375 method 34. 100 mg of samples where weighed out into ceramic crucibles and spread into a thin layer prevent charring. Sample were combusted at 375 ˚C for 24 hrs. under the flow of ultra high purity air (0.4 L min<sup>-1</sup>). The remaining sediment was transferred to GC vials for storage, then processed the same as the TOC samples to remove any inorganic carbon present (as detailed above).</p> <p><strong>Sampling equipment</strong></p> <p>Sediment cores were collected using an MC-800</p> <p><strong>Analytical instrumentation</strong></p> <p>&nbsp;An Elemental Analyzer (Costech 4010 Elemental Analyzer) was used for quantification of the BC and TOC fractions. Shatsky Rise, ODP Sites 1209 and 1210 Maastrichtian composite bulk carbonate stable isotopes, XRF scanning, biogenic barium, and benthic foraminiferal records

<p>A bulk composite carbonate stable isotope, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) scanning (elemental barium), biogenic barium and benthic foraminiferal record in deep sea sediments from the tropical Pacific was produced from 71.5 to 66 million years ago to determine variations in carbon export in the Pacific during the Maastrichtian. The cores were drilled on Shatsky Rise in the tropical Pacific at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 198 Sites 1209 and 1210. Method details and interpretation are in the publication.</p>

Quality control for modern bone collagen stable carbon and nitrogen isotope measurements

<p><strong>(1)</strong> Isotopic analyses of collagen, the main protein preserved in sub fossil bone and tooth, has long provided a powerful tool for the reconstruction of ancient diets and environments. Although isotopic studies of contemporary ecosystems have typically focused on more accessible tissues (e.g., muscle, hair), there is growing interest in the potential for analyses of collagen because it is often available in hard tissue archives (e.g., scales, skin, bone, tooth), allowing for enhanced long-term retrospective studies. The quality of measurements of the stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic compositions of ancient samples are subject to robust and well-established criteria for detection of contaminants and digenesis. Among these quality control (QC) criteria, the most widely utilized is the atomic C:N ratio (C:N<sub>Atomic</sub>), which for ancient samples has an acceptable range between  2.9 and 3.6. While this QC criterion was developed for ancient materials, it has increasingly being applied to collagen from modern tissues.</p> <p><strong>(2)</strong> Here we use a large survey of published collagen amino acid compositions (n<em> </em>= 436) from 193 vertebrate species as well as recent experimental isotopic evidence from 413 modern collagen extracts to demonstrate that the C:N<sub>Atomic</sub> range used for ancient samples is not suitable for assessing collagen quality of modern and archived historical samples.</p> <p><strong>(3) </strong>For modern tissues, collagen C:N<sub>Atomic</sub> falling outside 3.00–3.30 for fish and 3.00–3.28 for mammals and birds can produce systematically skewed isotopic compositions and may lead to significant interpretative errors. These findings are followed by a review of protocols for improving C:N<sub>Atomic</sub> criteria for modern collagen extracts.</p> <p><strong>(4)</strong> Given the tremendous conservation and environmental policy-informing potential that retrospective isotopic analyses of collagen from contemporary and archived vertebrate tissues have for addressing pressing questions about long-term environmental conditions and species behaviours, it is critical that QC criteria tailored to modern tissues are established.</p>

Grain size and clay mineralogy data of the Esplugafreda sequence (Spain) with stable carbon, oxygen and clumped isotope data of soil carbonates

<p>This datasets contains 1) grain size distribution data of mudstone paleosols of the Esplugafreda sequence (Esplugafreda and Claret Formations) measured by laser diffraction, and 2) clay mineralogy measured by powder X-ray diffraction, as well as 3) stable carbon, oxygen and clumped (D47) isotope compositions of soil carbonates. The Esplugafreda sequence is found in the Tremp-Graus Basin in the southern forefront of the Pyrenees and consists of continental sediments formed in a coastal alluvial setting during the late Paleocene and early Eocene.</p> <p>In addition, a proxy dataset of late Paleocene and PETM continental temperatures of the northern hemisphere is also included.</p>

Meterological and stable carbon, oxygen and clumped isotope data of land snails Clausilia pumila, Succinella oblonga and Trochulus hispidus from Europe

<p>These data include site information and collection dates of land snails (Clausilia pumila, Succinella oblonga and Trochulus hispidus), meteorological data of collection sites of molluscs derived using the ClimateEU software, as well as carbon, oxygen and clumped isotope compositions of snail shells of the mentioned three species from culturing experiments and natural populations across Europe. During the laboratory experiments individuals of the three species were kept at 12, 18 and 24 Celsius temperatures in climate chambers, fed exclusively by fresh lettuce and humidity was controlled using tap water (d18O: -9.29+-0.52 permil, V-SMOW). d13C, 18O and D47 values of snail shells from lab experiments and field-collections were determined in two laboratories (Isnt. for Nuclear Research, Debrecen, and Geological Institute, ETH Z&uuml;rich) using IRMS. Year-round observations of stable carbon isotopic composition of diacids and related compounds in fine aerosols at Tianjin, North China – Data set

<p>To better understand the origins and photochemical processing of water-soluble organic aerosols in the Tianjin region, North China, we studied the stable isotopic composition (&delta;<sup>13</sup>C) of diacids, oxoacids, &alpha;-dicarbonyls, citric acid and fatty acids in fine aerosols (PM<sub>2.5</sub>) collected at an urban (Nankai District, ND; <em>n</em> = 121) and a suburban (Haihe Education Park, HEP; <em>n</em> = 40) sites in Tianjin from 5 July 2018 to 4 July 2019. The &delta;<sup>13</sup>C of diacids and related compounds were measured using a capillary gas chromatography (Agilent 7890B) coupled with isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-irMS) system. Based on seasonal variations in &delta;<sup>13</sup>C of selected species and linear relations with their concentrations and mass ratios, we found that the diacids and related compounds were mainly derived from fossil fuel including coal combustion and biomass burning and photochemical processing, preferably in gaseous- and aqueous-phases in warm (March-September) and cold (October-February) periods, respectively, in Tianjin, North China.</p>

<p>Oxygen isotopes in stream water can serve as natural tracers of watershed dynamics. Freshwater pearl mussels provide &delta;<sup>18</sup>O<sub>water</sub> estimates that overcome temporal and spatial limitations of instrumental records. The reliability of shell‑based &delta;<sup>18</sup>O<sub>water</sub> reconstructions depends on understanding which shell layer biomineralizes closer to oxygen isotopic equilibrium with ambient water<em>.</em></p> <p>This dataset contains isotope data obtained from freshwater pearl mussel shells<em>,</em> as discussed in the article titled "Biologically driven isotope fractionation in ultrastructurally different shell portions of freshwater pearl mussels <em>(Margaritifera margaritifera):</em> Implications for stream water &delta;<sup>18</sup>O reconstructions".</p> <p>The dataset includes &delta;<sup>18</sup>O and &delta;<sup>13</sup>C values from field-collected and tank-reared bivalve shells, complemented by <em>in-situ</em> &delta;<sup>18</sup>O<sub>water</sub> measurements from the tanks and shell growth rates of the tank-reared specimens.</p>
