Career Within Academia, Survey Report: Embedded Discrimination and Career Tips for junior researchers.

We have asked junior researchers that are or have been engaged in a career within Norwegian academia to share their career experience and perspectives. Despite our comprehensive questionnaire, we collected 193 responses coming from various fields and with different levels of seniority, with a survey combining both closed-ended and open-ended questions.

A baseline hypothesis in academic policy is that, by increasing the competition to reach a certain position, the best candidates will be selected. We here examine the consequence of this selective path on the competitors and how the selection criteria is perceived by participants in our study.

In the second document we disclose the open answers provided by the respondents. To facilitate the navigation in the wide set of tips collected, we subdivided the answer in categories:
Work/personal life balance, Academic Career Planning, which contains Network, general strategy tips, CV development, scientific communication and advisor, and Career outside academia tips. At the end of these sections, we collected longer and more comprehensive suggestions in the category "Broad tips".
As it can be noted by the answers, a large set of concepts have been discussed by the respondents. Further analysis concerning associations between these observations and its consequences for the candidates, on career tips from researchers to junior researchers**, will be provided in forthcoming publications based on the collected data.

Data from: TRANSCENDS: a career development program for underrepresented in medicine scholars in academic neurology

Background: The Training in Research for Academic Neurologists to Sustain Careers and Enhance the Numbers of Diverse Scholars (TRANSCENDS) program is a career advancement opportunity for individuals underrepresented in biomedical research, funded by the National Institute and Neurological Disorders and Stroke; and American Academy of Neurology (AAN).

Objective: To report on qualitative and quantitative outcomes in TRANSCENDS.

Design: Early career individuals (neurology fellows and junior faculty) from groups underrepresented in medicine were competitively selected from a national pool of applicants (2016-2019). TRANSCENDS activities comprised an online Clinical Research degree program, monthly webinars, AAN meeting activities, and mentoring. Participants were surveyed during and after completion of TRANSCENDS to evaluate program components.

Outcomes: Of 23 accepted scholars (comprising four successive cohorts), 56% were women; 61% Hispanic/Latinx, 30% Black/African American, 30% assistant professors. To date, 48% have graduated the TRANSCENDS program and participants have published 180 peer-reviewed articles. Mentees' feedback noted that professional skills development (i.e., manuscript and grant writing), networking opportunities, and mentoring were the most beneficial elements of the program. Stated opportunities for improvement included: incorporating a mentor-the-mentor workshop, providing more transitional support for mentees in the next stage of their careers, and requiring mentees to provide quarterly reports.

Conclusions: TRANSCENDS is a feasible program for supporting underrepresented in medicine neurologists towards careers in research and faculty academic appointments attained thus far have been sustained. While longer term outcomes and process enhancements are warranted, programs like this may help increase the numbers of diverse academic neurologists, and further drive neurological innovation.

Educational and Career Trajectories in Russia: Open Datasets

The datasets contain data retrieved from the “Jobs in Russia portal”. The datasets contain information about the education, work experience, desired salary and some demographic characteristics of candidates who posted their CVs on the portal between 2015 and 2023. The datasets cover 83 regions of Russia. Dataset 1 contains information on the education and career trajectories (N=6221439), while Dataset 2 contains the information about the general activity of unemployed and job seeking candidates (N=7662089). Each candidate has a unique ID and there are characteristics such as age, education type, region, working experience. The datasets are available as .csv files.

Dataset 1 is designed to study educational and career trajectories. It was obtained by aggregating all CVs for each candidate into a single record with a unique id_candidate, then normalizing text information about the candidates' work experience and education, and finally excluding records that do not contain required information.

Dataset 2 includes all records for the available period, but only covers general information and the activity metric. It might be useful to study the general portal dynamics and, therefore, the activity on the Russian labor market.

For citation, please use the data paper: Valko, D., Vasilevskaia, M., Bunina, M., Kozlova, M., Filippova, A. Recruiting, Retaining, and Promoting for Careers at Transportation Agencies

Corresponding data set for Tran-SET Project No. 17PPLSU07. Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:

"State transportation agencies currently face complex challenges in recruiting and retaining the workforce necessary to function effectively. The situation exacerbates due to the number of employees from different generations that have to coexist with varying values, expectations, and principles. These agencies are primarily comprised of two generational groups: the baby-boomers, who are approaching retirement and occupy many managerial positions; and the millennials, who are demonstrating their interest in technology and demanding dynamism in their careers. This multiplicity of interest represents a challenge for human resources (HR) in addressing workforce issues and providing the necessary means to recruit and retain qualified employees within a transportation agency. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to examine the practices in recruiting, training, and retaining qualified employees at state departments of transportation (DOTs) primarily from Region 6 DOTs of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. A comprehensive literature review, including journal articles, books, and District 6 DOT documents, reports, and training manuals provided the basis to discuss current practices in recruitment and retention with Region 6 DOT human resources (HR) staff. A total of nine HR professionals were interviewed for this study. These interviews identified the most difficult to fill positions as engineers and engineer technicians. These positions also have high turnover rates within DOTs. The primary difficulty in retaining and recruiting staff in these positions was ascribed to the wage differences between the public and the private sector. The results of the HR interviews were used to compile a questionnaire that was distributed to current DOT District 6 employees. A total of 1,109 employee surveys were collected and reviewed to develop a recommended list of best practices for recruiting and retaining DOT employees. The list of best practices includes increased social media presence, quantification of overall benefit packages, implementation of flexible work schedules and telecommuting, clarification and restructuring of the promotions and incentives process, and increased communication and feedback between staff and management."

Highlighting altruism in geoscience careers aligns with diverse US student ideals better than emphasizing working outdoors

We surveyed students enrolled in College Algebra at a large, urban, Hispanic-serving, R-1 public university in the southwestern United States. The data span five semesters, from Fall 2018 through Spring 2020. The survey was composed of demographic questions as well as questions using the Likert scale, in which students rated how much they agreed or disagreed with a particular statement regarding descriptions of their “ideal career.” Students were also asked to rate statements about careers in different science fields and engineering. Demographic questions were included at the end of the survey in order to mitigate stereotype threat.

Our study tests (i) whether altruistic factors, personal achievement, or work environment are most important to college students (early in their undergraduate program) for their future careers, (ii) whether the ratings of these ideals differ between male/female, URM/non-URM, and first-generation/non-first-generation college students, and (iii) how student perceptions of the geosciences are in regard to those ideals compared to other STEM fields.
