The influence of flow electrode channel design on flow capacitive deionization performance: Experimental and CFD modelling insights

<p>Flow capacitive deionization (FCDI) is an emerging desalination technology at which flow electrodes (shearthinning<br>flowable carbon slurries) are used to remove ions from saline water. The geometry of flow electrode<br>channels, which provide the path and ensure the distribution and mixing of the flow electrodes, is one of the most<br>important aspects to be optimized. This work presents experimental and computational fluid dynamics (CFD)<br>modelling analysis of the influence of the geometry of flow electrode channels on FCDI performance. Flow<br>electrode gaskets (with open, serpentine (short) horizontal and serpentine (long) vertical channels) were 3D<br>printed using a polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PET-G) filament. The FCDI cell with a vertical serpentine flow<br>electrode channel exhibited the poorest performance due to channel blockage by carbon particles, while the best<br>results were achieved with a horizontal serpentine flow electrode channel. CFD simulations aided in understanding<br>this behaviour by showing that the channel geometry strongly affects the local shear rate, and thus the<br>local viscosity of flow electrodes. Thus, it is recommended to design channels that induce flow disturbance<br>aiming for increasing the shear rate and hence reducing flow electrode viscosity, therefore promoting their<br>flowability and reducing clogging chances.</p>

<div> <div>This archive contains arrival time CDF data for a variety of transport simulations in heterogeneous Darcy flow fields, alongside metadata describing the flow fields. The flow fields were spatially periodic, intersected by uniformly-spaced imaginary planes. Arrival times represent length of time from particle departure from one plane until arrival at the next.</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>Consult the README.md file at the top level of the archive for more information. The file format used to store the CDF data is documented in the Python script at the top level of the archive.</div> </div>

Flow Visualization of Narrow Rectangular Channel for Annular Flow, Rolling-Wispy Flow, and Wispy Flow.

<p>The three videos showcase three different flow regimes in Narrow Rectangular Channels. A new flow regime called rolling-wispy flow is identified and flow visualization is shown in the file named Rolling_Wispy_Flow.avi. The other flow regimes are provided to contrast the three different flow regimes. It is evident from the videos that rolling-wispy flow shows characteristics of wispy flow during the rolling wave (material wave) in the liquid film at wall, hence the name.</p> <p>P.S.: The video files can be opened in VLC.</p>

Data from: Force and torque on spherical particles in micro-channel flows using computational fluid dynamics

To delineate the influence of hemodynamic force on cell adhesion processes, model in vitro fluidic assays that mimic physiological conditions are commonly employed. Herein, we offer a framework for solution of the three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to estimate the forces resulting from fluid flow near a plane acting on a sphere that is either stationary or in free flow, and we compare these results to a widely used theoretical model that assumes Stokes flow with a constant shear rate. We find that while the full three-dimensional solutions using a parabolic velocity profile in CFD simulations yield similar translational velocities to those predicted by the theoretical method, the CFD approach results in approximately 50% larger rotational velocities over the wall shear stress range of 0.1–5.0 dynes cm−2. This leads to an approximately 25% difference in force and torque calculations between the two methods. When compared with experimental measurements of translational and rotational velocities of microspheres or cells perfused in microfluidic channels, the CFD simulations yield significantly less error. We propose that CFD modelling can provide better estimations of hemodynamic force levels acting on perfused microspheres and cells in flow fields through microfluidic devices used for cell adhesion dynamics analysis.
