Table of counts for the temperature choice experiment performed on Cottus fish

Temperature choice experiment performed for three lineages of Cottus fish. Fish could move freely bewteen four aquarium tanks set to different temperatures (16-17-18-19°C). Table contains numbers of fish present in a given aquarium tank at a given time, which serves as a proxy for temperaturee preference.

Does sexual experience affect the strength of male mate choice for high-quality females in Drosophila melanogaster?

Although females are traditionally thought of as the choosy sex, there is increasing evidence in many species that males will preferentially court or mate with certain females over others when given a choice. In the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, males discriminate between potential mating partners based on a number of female traits, including species, mating history, age, and condition. Interestingly, many of these male preferences are affected by the male's previous sexual experiences, such that males increase courtship toward types of females that they have previously mated with and decrease courtship toward types of females that have previously rejected them. D. melanogaster males also show courtship and mating preferences for larger females over smaller females, likely because larger females have higher fecundity. It is unknown, however, whether this preference shows behavioral plasticity based on the male's sexual history as we see for other male preferences. Here, we manipulate the sexual experience of D. melanogaster males and test whether this manipulation has any effect on the strength of male mate choice for large females. We find that sexually inexperienced males have a robust courtship preference for large females that is unaffected by previous experience mating with, or being rejected by, females of differing sizes. Given that female body size is one of the most common targets of male mate choice across insect species, our experiments with D. melanogaster may provide insight into how these preferences develop and evolve.

Data from Choice Architecture experiment with Experts

we present the evaluation of the interventions we designed using the Choice-Architecture-based Interventions Design procedure for SDR. The evaluation is of functional character, we seek to test whether the procedure can produce interventions that actually persuade scientists (i.e., users) to change their data-sharing behaviour. To perform the evaluation, we ran a pseudo-randomised control crossover trial experiment. In achieving so, we used the implementations of the procedure that were presented in my thesis as treatments.

We found that Emphasis Framing can affect scientists’ data-sharing behaviour, when having to decide to share a dataset upon publication, and their satisfaction when performing the activity. On the other hand, we ran into difficulties to recruit participants to test all the interventions defined here.

This data support my thesis work.

Odorant choice experiment of Tylonycteris Pachypus

Insectivorous bats are mostly amblyope, however, they have very strong echolocation and olfactory systems. They use ultrasonic sounds to avoid pray and to locate food; they use scent alone to discriminate between colony and non-colony-mates, males and females and individuals of different age. Previous studies show that olfactory cues serve an important role in animal close-up recognition, however, there are still many unknowns to be clarified. We designed three main experiments in order to understand the role of olfactory cues in bat social communication. These comprise the pup odorant choice experiment (POC), the colony-mate odorant choice experiment (COC) and the gender odorant choice experiment (GOC) which were all carried out on the lesser flat-headed bat, Tylonycteris pachypus. Our results suggest that olfactory cues play an important role in T. pachypus mother-pup, colony-mate and gender recognition, however, the POC experiment shows that there was no significant difference between a newborn and a weaning pup. In the COC experiment, we found that bats were more attracted to colony-mates except for subadults, whilst in the GOC experiment, female bats were more attracted to female colony-mates. This is the first time that recognition behaviour of bats has been studied in multiple aspects.
