Data for: Risk in the circular food economy: Glyphosate-based herbicide residues in manure fertilizers decrease crop yield

Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) are the most frequently used herbicides globally. They were launched as a safe solution for weed control, but recently, an increasing number of studies have shown the existence of GBH residues and highlighted the associated risks they pose throughout ecosystems. Conventional agricultural practices often include the use of GBHs, and the use of glyphosate-resistant genetically modified crops is largely based on the application of glyphosate, which increases the likelihood of its residues ending up in animal feed. These residues persist throughout the digestive process of production animals and accumulate in their excretion products. The poultry industry, in particular, is rapidly growing, and excreted products are used as plant fertilizers in line with circular food economy practices. We studied the potential effects of unintentional glyphosate contamination on an agronomically important forage grass, meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis) and a horticulturally important strawberry (Fragaria x vescana) using glyphosate residues containing poultry manure as a plant fertilizer in a common garden experiment. Glyphosate in the manure decreased plant growth in both species and vegetative reproduction in F. x vescana. Furthermore, our results indicate that glyphosate residues in organic fertilizers might have indirect effects on sexual reproduction in F. pratensis and herbivory in F. x vescana because they positively correlate with plant size. Our results highlight that glyphosate can be unintentionally spread via organic fertilizer, counteracting its ability to promote plant growth.

Data to D3.1 - Policy design for the transition to circular economy –assessing the inclusion of water and territory in national action plans

This policy paper is part of Project Ô −Demonstration of planning and technology tools for a circular, integrated, and symbiotic use of water, and of WP3 dedicated to the Integrated water management, planning and CE. Itassesses the integration of water and landrelated issues in national CEaction plans of a set of European Union (EU)member states. So far, only two countries associated to the Project Ô demo-sites have a CEaction plan, namely Spain and Italy. This paper also covers a set ofother EU countries enlarging the scope of the analysis.Itis structured into four sections. Section 1 describes the problem and challenges. Section 2 identifies the European policy approach for CEand questions how water and landrelated issues are considered. Section 3 assesses how these concerns have been taken into account in a large set of EU member states CEaction plans. Section 4 suggests a set of policy recommendations for policy design of CEplans regarding water and landrelated issues.

CityLoops - Circular economy indicator set (complete)

This file contains a list of 446 circular economy (CE) indicators compiled by Nordland Research Institute from an extensive review of the CE monitoring framework literature, carried out as part of the Horizon 2020 project CityLoops (GA no. 821033). Frameworks and indicators with relevance for a European city setting were prioritized for inclusion on the list. In the dataset, each indicator is presented with a brief definition and a literature reference and classified along various dimensions to facilitate filtering of the data. The dataset was compiled during the period 2019-2020. Expired hyperlinks were updated in September 2023.

A 2018 Social Accounting Matrix for Germany depicting waste and recycling accounts for a circular economy

The 2018 SAM for Germany comprises of 160 accounts including 63 activities, 85 commodities, margins, labor, capital, household, government, social contributions, taxes on products, activity tax, direct tax, stock change, savings and investment and the rest of the world. It is entirely based on data from the Federal Statistical Office of Germany (Destatis), which guarantees the highest possible degree of data-consistency. Because the initial version of the SAM (Proto-SAM) has imbalances in the government, savings and investment and the rest of the world accounts, a balanced SAM is estimated using the cross-entropy method. To ensure the consistency of the data through the estimation process, macro totals are enforced as controls for total imports, total value-added, total private consumption, total government consumption and total exports.
