Interior Aljibe (Cistern) Castillo de Los Vélez

The cistern (aljibe) of the castle of Los Vélez in Mula (Murcia) was designed and built to guarantee the water supply to the defenders of the keep in case of a siege. The exterior is protected by solid stone walls built directly on the natural bedrock. The cistern has a rectangular floor plan and is covered by a barrel vault. Inside it preserves the red plaster (almagra) that served both to waterproof the space and to improve water conservation. This model was created from 867 images. The images were aligned and modeled in Agisoft Photoscan 1.4. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

Measurements of abandoned cisterns and potential roof catchments in the southern Mani Peninsula, Greece

Field measurements of 275 domestic cisterns and 111 houses in the southern region of the Mani Peninsula, Greece. The cisterns date to the Late Byzantine to Early Modern periods (up until the 19th century) and fall into two structural categories: an earlier 'slab-topped' form and a later 'barrel-vaulted' form. The houses date to the Late Byzantine to Ottoman periods (up until the 16th century) and are characterized by a 'megalithic' architecture. Together the data may be used to calculate potential water storage capacity in domestic contexts. A paper interpreting these data, 'Seascapes and fresh water management in rural Greece: the case of the Mani peninsula, 1261–1821 CE,' will be published in Levant at: http://doi.org/10.1080/00758914.2020.1789316. The article post-print is available at: http://works.bepress.com/rebecca-seifried/12/.

Dr. Seifried collected the data as part of a PhD dissertation completed in 2016 through the Department of Anthropology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, entitled 'Community Organization and Imperial Expansion in a Rural Landscape: The Mani Peninsula, Greece (AD 1000-1821)' (https://hdl.handle.net/10027/21274). Fieldwork was conducted in 2014 and 2016 under the auspices of the 5th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities in Sparta and in collaboration with the Diros Project, an archaeological survey and excavation co-directed by Dr. Giorgos Papathanassopoulos and Dr. Anastasia Papathanasiou through the Ephorate of Palaeoanthropology & Speleology of Southern Greece.

This research was funded by the National Science Foundation [BCS-1346694], the DigitalGlobe Foundation, the National Cadastre and Mapping Agency, SA (Ktimatologio), ArchaeoLandscapes Europe, and the University of Illinois at Chicago.
