Detection and Estimation of Inundation and Associated Risks Using Traffic and Monitoring Cameras and Image Processing Under Extreme Flooding Conditions
<p>The main objective of this project is to develop an inundation detection and evaluation framework using images from traffic monitoring cameras and reliable flood monitoring under extreme precipitation conditions. This study presents a comparative assessment of image enhancement and segmentation techniques to automatically identify the flash flooding from the low-resolution images taken by traffic-monitoring cameras. Due to inaccurate equipment in severe weather conditions (e.g., raindrops or light refraction on camera lenses), low-resolution images are subject to noises that degrade the quality of information. De-noising procedures are carried out for the enhancement of images by removing different types of noises. After the de-noising, image segmentation is implemented to detect the inundation from the images automatically. In addition, the detection of the inundation using the image segmentation with and without de-noising techniques are compared. The results indicate that among de-noising methods, the Bayes shrink with the thresholding discrete wavelet transform shows the most reliable result. For the image segmentation, the Bayesian segmentation is superior to the others. The results demonstrate that the proposed image enhancement and segmentation methods can be effectively used to identify the inundation from low-resolution images taken in severe weather conditions. A new Bayesian filtering method will be devised and applied to estimate the inundation from low-resolution images that will allow traffic engineers to take preventive or proactive actions to improve the safety of drivers and protect and preserve the transportation infrastructure. This new observation with improved accuracy will enhance our understanding of dynamic urban flooding by filling an information gap in the locations where conventional observations have limitations.</p>
Data from: Weather conditions determine attenuation and speed of sound: environmental limitations for monitoring and analysing bat echolocation
Echolocating bats are regularly studied to investigate auditory-guided behaviours and as important bioindicators. Bioacoustic monitoring methods based on echolocation calls are increasingly used for risk assessment and to ultimately inform conservation strategies for bats. As echolocation calls transmit through the air at the speed of sound, they undergo changes due to atmospheric and geometric attenuation. Both the speed of sound and atmospheric attenuation, however, are variable and determined by weather conditions, particularly temperature and relative humidity. Changing weather conditions thus cause variation in analysed call parameters, limiting our ability to detect and correctly analyse bat calls. Here, I use real-world weather data to exemplify the effect of varying weather conditions on the acoustic properties of air. I then present atmospheric attenuation and speed of sound for the global range of weather conditions and bat call frequencies to show their relative effects. Atmospheric attenuation is a non-linear function of call frequency, temperature, relative humidity and atmospheric pressure. While atmospheric attenuation is strongly positively correlated with call frequency, it is also significantly influenced by temperature and relative humidity in a complex non-linear fashion. Variable weather conditions thus result in variable and unknown effects on the recorded call, affecting estimates of call frequency and intensity, particularly for high frequencies. Weather-induced variation in speed of sound reaches up to about ±3%, but is generally much smaller and only relevant for acoustic localisation methods of bats. The frequency- and weather-dependent variation in atmospheric attenuation has a three-fold effect on bioacoustic monitoring of bats: it limits our capability (1) to monitor bats equally across time, space, and species, (2) to correctly measure frequency parameters of bat echolocation calls, particularly for high-frequencies, and (3) to correctly identify bat species in species-rich assemblies or for sympatric species with similar call designs.

<p>The advent of packaged infra-red (IR) bolometer detectors has led to thermography-based techniques becoming popular for non-destructive evaluation of aerospace structures. These packaged bolometers are relatively compact and cost about 10% the price of high-resolution IR photovoltaic effect detectors. In this work, a condition monitoring system for in situ crack detection has been presented which utilises an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) microbolometer detector. The proposed system cost approximately 1% the price of a state-of-the-art photovoltaic effect detector system and has the potential to transform the use of IR imaging for condition monitoring in the aerospace industry and elsewhere. The proposed system performs crack detection based on the principles of thermoelastic stress analysis (TSA), which is a well-established non-destructive thermography technique. Proof-of-concept lab tests were performed on open-hole aluminium specimens to compare the performance of the proposed system against an IR photovoltaic effect detector system and demonstrate its potential application for in situ crack detection in industrial environments. It was demonstrated that crack detection is possible from loading waveform signals with frequencies as low as 0.3 Hz. This represents a significant advance in the viability of TSA-based crack detection in large-scale structural tests where loading frequencies are usually lower than 1 Hz.</p> <p> </p>
